My Persimmon gets curve leaves. How to treat it?
Comments (14)You said: "My persimmon is on the upper level of my yard, so week killer cannot touch it. I go green in the last six month which mean I use no weed killer. I pull the weed by hand, and use grass fertilizer only." That doesn't rule out weed killer damage. The reason: Vapors move on the breeze. It could have come from several doors away. That said, Don knows more about tree fruits in his half of the US than I do. Beyond that, even though psylla-affected foliage returns to normal after a while, so does herbicide-affected foliage. So look very carefully to determine what the problem was. Here's some info about persimmon psylla from Univ Florida http://entnem.ufl.edu/creatures/fruit/persimmon_psylla.htm That same info is in this pdf which you can print. edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/IN/IN70000.pdf Oh yes. Congratulations on going green. Here is a link that might be useful: persimmon psylla from Univ Florida...See MoreTreating Big area for Spider Mites
Comments (20)Neem helps, not as a "kill-on-contact" but as a long-time prevention...IF YOU APPLY IT CORRECTLY. Because most Neem/Karanja oil products must be mixed into an emulsion, you cannot just mix an oil into water, folks! Get bottled water (unless you have very soft tap water) and add some insecticidal soap (aka. Castille soap or potassium soap) to make an emulsion. (Hard tap water wont work since soap doesn't lather well in very hard water, it would flake). Then add the Neem oil to the emulsion...and finally you need to bring the ph of the mixture down (soap has a very high ph of 11 ) so add some squirts of lemon juice to get ph to 5ish. As you can imagine, the combination insecticidal soap (which kills the mites instantly and helps washing your plants, gets rids of the eggs etc. when you spray) PLUS the Neem oil in the soap emulsion is the perfect combination. Now repeat when you have a massive mite invasion in 3 days, otherwise repeat every 14 days. Feel free to spray preventive as well. Get a decent manual garden pressure sprayer, it makes a big difference as compared to using a tiny pump sprayer. (The €15 pressure sprayer I got is like the best investment I did in ages :) If you have a garden or porch: Hose your plants thoroughly, carefully but forcefully enough with water from the hose. You want to wash everything, mites, eggs etc. off first! Then use pressure sprayer with your insecticidal (potassium) soap emulsion w/ Neem oil and spray GOOD, underside of the leaves, top, everywhere. Don't spray in the heat of the day or direct sun, spray early morning or evening. There are not too many mites who would survive this, insecticidal soap and Neem is the best there is, entirely organic, non-toxic and the soap will actually turn to fertilizer (potash). If people failed with Neem it's because they didn't do it right! (And yes I made the rookie mistake too, getting Neem, mixing it with tap water and spraying...it won't to a thing like this, you need to do it right!) I'd go so far as to say insecticidal soap alone is pointless (because the mites will come back) and Neem oil alone isn't optimal either, because you want to get rid of them right away, so use both in combination, it's the perfect mite killer and prevention in one!)...See MoreAny advice for treating bamboo mites in NW?
Comments (7)I just figured out what was wrong with my black bamboo I got at the green elephant trading March of 05; spider mites. It was my first bamboo and I tried to learn as much as I could before getting it. At first I thought they were old leaves, and being newly transplanted put them in shock, so I ignored the warning signs. Now most of the mature canes that came with the clump are almost all dead, and a few that are left are slowly turning gray. Fortunately bamboo is resilient and the new shoots are still coming, and are not too badly infected. Now that I know what I am dealing with I can make a plan of action. Word of caution and warning to those trading plants; please make sure you check them out and that they are pest free before trading. This way it will keep anything from infecting anyone elseÂs garden. If you are receiving plants check them out thoroughly before planting them in your own garden; this way you avoid losing plants. For those of us newbies do not ignore any spot, discoloration of your plant, it may be from being hot, it just need water, but better then to be over cautious then lose most of your plants. I have to let myself off the hook a little because I am dealing with a non-curable disease that leaves me bedridden a lot. Lesson learned, so because I had it on hand I soaked my bamboo with some insecticide spray until I can get something that is for spider mites, and maybe my new bamboo from the spring will be saved and next springs crop of shoots will grow up beautiful! Comments (9)Kimmsr now that I know what we had...I agree. But my husband does not do well with any insect. Our house is sprayed to keep bugs away. So he was putting something on it. Until I found out what would treat them. We set it outside and treated it. We've had hard rain...and a possible tornado. We have some people from the weather center coming to our area to check out the damage. Many homes with trees. We were fortunate to be spared...though two large branches that hang over our sunroom wa torn off. But were tossed into the ravine beside our home. Running on a generator... The hibiscus was knocked down...but seems alright. With all the hard rain surely all insects are gone....See Moretrinigemini
