What is this scoop gadget?

My wife makes lots of cookies. We have some cookie scoops that look like ice cream scoops. I also found this gadget in our drawer and thought it was a small cookie scoop too. Is it? It is a molded plastic scoop (with handle) with a semi sharp rim that might hold 2 tablespoons. Most critically, it has an orange bottom that I initially failed to realize was flexable. The cookie dough sure didn't come out because I thought it was rigid.

It is made by Robinson in buffalo NY.

Some kind person gave me one of the Push Button Cookie Dough Scoops with the flexible bottom. You push the dough out of the scoop by pushing the bottom in. Personally, I didn't like this particular gadget for portioning dough (it was never the "right" size for cookies I make) and I will stick to my large assortment of stainless steel scoops (which work like an ice cream scoop).

One of my friends used the "push on the bottom" type when we were baking cookies together. It worked fine and she had the method for using it down pat.

I still use my ice cream-style cookie scoops and will be using the small one today for portioning out cocktail meatballs.

This will sound a bit silly, but we garden a relatively large area, and I use and really love the almost fifty-year-old Ford tractor, which moves compost, manure & mulch, mows the field and woods roads, and picks up and moves rocks. I made fun of my husband when he bought it second hand about 12 years ago, but I probably use it about as much as he does now. As I age, having a machine to help with the heavy chores is really nice. Like duluthinbloomz4 I love my scuffle hoe - cuts both coming and going, and doesn't need lifting - just shuffle it back and forth to get rid of weeds. I like goatskin gardening gloves since I can throw them in the washing machine when they get too grubby, but they are tougher than fabric gloves and quite flexible. I love my straight edged spade, which I use for edging as well as for digging in soft soil. It has a D shaped plastic handle on a wooden shaft which is warmer and has less vibration than metal. I'm not sure that any of those qualify as gadgets, but they are my favorite and most-used tools.

Jay's right....just stay away from TT. I bought 3 trees from them in the past and only ONE has survived, my caimito which has barely put on any growth at all. I wish I would have stayed away from them. Plantogram is awesome. I also found the best way to get in touch with them is to just call. Mickey recieves a lot of emails and it takes him a lot of time to respond. I bought 1 mango from him and it has done nicely for me. Andrew

I have a couple of cookie scoops, but I still prefer the push-off-the-teaspoon-with-my-finger method, LOL. Plus it gives the grandkids a chance to eat too much cookie dough, all filled with raw eggs, before it gets baked, because their job is to roll the cookies into balls before baking.

OK, seriously, the cookie scoops are great, I have the stainless steel "ice cream scoop" type and I've had no personal experience with the silicone one you describe, but my secretary has one and loves it. Go figure, I guess it's one of those personal preference things and I sure don't need another gadget to stuff into my kitchen drawers so I probably won't try one either.

But it definitely is a cookie scoop.

I have had this one for years and find it is the next best thing to the spoon-finger method.

Cathy, that looks pretty cool....I just ordered one.

Chas, could you scoop be a melon baller? Although 2 tablespoons sounds like a large one, I have a plastic scoop for melons.

Thanks for putting in the link for Scoops.

I have been using these for about 50 years or more.

Bought them when I had the Pizzeria.
The large one for mesuring out Meatballs and compressing the meat.

The small one I use for measuring and dropping the dough on the Pizzelle Baker.
It holds 1.5 ounces.

I also use it for measuring and making the small Meatballs for Chicken Wedding Soup.
I could never find another like it. " Fante's of Philly ",
did not have that size.

Annie, if my wife will let me help her, I will try out the 'flex' scoop. Even though we have the two 'ice cream' scoops she just uses your off the spoon approach.

ML, I was also thinking of trying it for large mellon balls, but I always just slice mellon.

Lou, 'you're welcome', I like the good old tools too. I have three actual old ice cream scoops that came from various home auctions in assorted junk boxes. AND 'the next new thing' the meatball cocktail. Dye 'em green, or roll them around an onion and call it a HiPro Gibson. ;-]

Thanks Rob, I guess I should have introduced myself a year ago but I mainly just lurk. I was a chemist and cook like one, but I like to learn about cooking on the off chance that I might do something differently. And you all seem to be having such a good time.
