Well, tinker, since you have AWESOME taste, I have no doubt you will pick the best color.
I would have said black, because I think that the red would fade and look more rust color. But then I saw kellyeng's choices, and I LOVE the pale blue color.
You live in Florida, right? I think a pale color in a warm climate is so beautiful.

wow... so many ideas!! I'm so glad I posted here, because I have now totally rethought my first decision about the red, and seeing the photoshopped pictures of MY house... made me change my mind about black, although I drool over kswl's doors!!

eggplant color, I like it, I just don't see it as one of my colors.

charlcoal gray - ..... nice, I like it too! I think an "almost black" could look nice.

gray green.. that's where I see it going as of today, as of this hour!! lol

shutters.. to be determined, but I think they are calling for some color too!

My vote is for a terracotta or brick red which would harmonize with the bricks you already have. A black door would look crisp, but I think it's not welcoming at all. I know you said eggplant is not your color, but that would give you something close to black but not as "aggressive", if you can say such a thing about a door!

Jersey Cream is on.. trim is underway to being finished.

I painted 2 colors... of greenish gray! The first on on the left was my first choice, and I liked it, but since I had to run to the paint store.. I was tempted by another greenish gray and that is on the right. The right is deeper... and once I put it next to the first greenish gray, it made paint #1 more olive green, but still pretty!

I would mix the two together. I like the little bit of yellow in the lighter color, because I think it works better with the siding, but I like the depth of the darker one. I would use the darker one as the primary paint, and then start adding in the lighter one until you get in that bit of yellow undertone.

Personally, with the dark railings and brick I would probably even go a bit darker in the door color, so it doesn't seem so similar in value to the siding.

Either are great, or mix 'em....love it!

Darker. The lighter one has too much yellow and doesn't contrast enough with the Jersey Cream.

We also painted our house Jersey Cream and the door and shutters are a dark Charleston-Greeney color (Belle Meade Green from Sherwin Williams). I would love to paint the door a different and more welcoming color, but we have a storm door which has black trim and I hate the idea of it clashing with the door color.

tinker, how have you stripped down your wood doors/trim and also your bricks around your fireplace?

arapaho, I use a heat gun to strip all the wood and for the brick around the fireplaces, I used a stripper called "Peel Away" it's like a paste and you apply it and cover it with paper. I never got mine to "peel away" like they said, but I scrapped and scrubbed and it was better than anything else I tried.

soooooo... I went back to paint color #1 (on left) and went the next shade up. It was pretty similar as #2 but different. I like it.. I think! I'm not sure... my landscaper designer just came over, I showed him the door and I could tell it didn't "excite" him. Hi said it's nice, it works... and let's see what it looks like once the black railings are in!! wahhhhhh!! I wanted him to say "it's perfect!"

Still staring at the paint color this morning. I "Like" it, I think the color looks good, it's safe... but I'm 2nd guessing myself and think maybe the terra cotta /brick red.. would have had more pop... more of "here I am front door". ?

I liked the lighter green, it was more connected with the yellow. The current color looks gray green, almost Colonial. Have you thought of a slightly rose red, rather than brick red?

Yeah, it looks kind of muddy. I still like the shade you had on the right.

I agree that it doesn't really "pop". I'd try a terracotta that will harmonize with your porch, and put a planter next to the door that completes the look. You're lucky to be ruminating about a door; I've painted and repainted so many rooms we have probably 30 paint can samples in our garage waiting to be disposed of. Good luck! If you don't love the green don't give up until you find a color you know is right for you.

I think I'm on the right track... a red door! My landscape designer is here and helped pick a color... I've been running to stores for samples (when I have a million other things to do) and.... samples for the door are just a few on my paint changes! My first 2 greens were the real deal $$$ but I have painted entire rooms - only to change my mind!!

Anyway.. I think I'm close. He has an interior designer who he wanted to show my house in progress to, so she is on her way.. luck me! I'll get to see what she says!

You were on the right track from the very beginning. You just got sidetracked. ;)

Please consider a deep coral color instead of a red. I think it would be great with the brick, and fresher than the expected red.

natal.. yes, I guess you're right - I did get sidetracked!

So the landscape designer likes it more red, told me to ignore the bricks that it works with the house. The interior decorator didn't make it... so no comments from her. I had 3 other people that stopped by (Late in the day, not much sun so paint did change). Anyway, 2 liked the red and one like the terra cotta - it's a toss up! I don't think either of them look bad, and I think either one will work, but I'm thinking of getting something in between and just going for it!

tinker, just wanted to say I noticed the new doorbell which looks great!

Is that a solid wood door under the paint? If so, would you consider stripping and staining it?

Chibimimi, see first photo- door is stripped and is cypress, and I did think of staining it, but decided I rather have the color... and new enamel paint in in my hands... just waiting for tyhe sun to move so I can paint it!

Could I recommend that you put a coat of shellac or some other colorless sealer between the wood and the paint? That way, if you decide you do want natural wood later, it would be much easier to strip it later; the paint won't soak into the wood grain.

My preference would be a nice stain on the door, partly because it's classic and partly because it's rarer. But I think the green would work well, also.

Railing was installed Friday, I think it makes the house look so much better! I still need to find better planter boxes, but since our first family party (Easter) was held here, I rushed to home depot for a quick fix!

Gail, the light is old, not original, but probably 20 years. During my light hunting, I did see many similar ones.. try searching for nautical lighting or coastal lighting. There was another company I had booked marks as well.. I'll see if I can find them!
