Cooking magazine subsciptions: Which ones are worthwhile?

I want to use the opportunity and get a subscription or two to some cooking a magazines while the US Dollar is low. The only American cooking magazines I am familiar with are Gourmet and Bon Apetit. What other American cooking magazines should I consider? (They need to ones that offer international subscriptions).

I'm looking for something that's rich in features and doesn't just have recipes, but articles about food, food travel, cookbook reviews, information about cooking gadgets, and so on. Great photos would be a definite bonus.

I love my magazines.BonAppetite is very good..Fine Cooking is as well...on the lighter side is Cooking Light.I find them all to have great months and not so great but then again its all about the topic they are addressing.My problem is what to do with them once you have them as they do add up...and saving the entire magazine for a recipe or two seems foolish...plus with a bundle sitting there make finding that recipe difficult. I used to get Bon Appetit. I don't anymore, but it sounds like one you might be looking for. I prefer Cook's Illustrated znd Cook's Country myself, but the articles in Bon Appetit might be what you want. Personally, I do not like Gourmet.

Thought I would share an update.... I made Ruthanna's apple cake with caramel icing to take to our church function. Only change was- I put chopped pecans in the cake, too. Everybody liked it. The icing is RICH! One guy came by and kept raving about how good it was and how much he loved it until I gave him the leftovers.(ok, I saved a piece for me to bring home. Shhh...) Alfred (Hubby) loved it, but said he liked his cake best without icing. I'm going to try LindaC's apple cake with the cake gravy on the side next. Our son loved it, too. He is happy he got his caramel fix. He said it was even better with bottled caramel sauce drizzled over his piece. Yes he did! (I tried a bite. Wasn't bad.) I sneaked in Walmart without son after church today to grab a couple of things on his Christmas list and found a Fine Cooking magazine in my basket at the checkout counter. :) Jude, My best successes have been with the T&T recipes I've found here. My guys will eat anything that doesn't eat them first! Feeding them is the easy part. The hardest part is filling them up for longer than an hour! Especially our son who is 17, 6'2" and is on the track team. Runs off everything he eats and is ALWAYS hungry! Momj47, I MUST read something all of the time! I can't take my laptop everywhere with me, but I NEVER leave home without a book or magazine. A donation would have been nice, but this was a perfect excuse I MEAN opportunity to expand my horizons in the culinary world AND help my Grandson's school. Win/Win. Hubby will be happy if I get a few good recipes from the subscription. See the part above about not filling them up! Thanks again, everyone. Don't know when I've had so much fun buying magazines. Magazines are desperate for subscribers, they use them to justify their ad rates. I'm sure that they've teamed with Amazon to find the right demographics. I received one for Food and Wine from I think it was BB&B if I spent over a certain dollar amount. I don't think I did anything with it. The blizzard of paper in our house with 2 newspapers a day is crazy now. I don't need more! Just be careful that they don't hook you in by giving you a free number of months and if you don't cancel they'll charge your credit card. That awful scam was perpetrated a couple of years ago by Best Buy. You had no idea what the terms were, just that you were receiving the magazines and after a few months a rather high charge appeared on your credit card bill! Do a Google search to be sure! Mtn: Oh, gosh, that is embarrassing. It looks like I read your post, got the idea, and then forgot WHERE I got the idea. Ooh, boy, creeping senescence... I am not concerned that slate used as a floor tile would not be food safe. I suppose your concern is not the slate, but a chemical sealer? My understanding is that slate is usually not pre-sealed. Moreover, I really doubt that they pre-seal the stuff at this price point; it certainly did not seem sealed, as water did not bead on it and it soaked the oil right up. And sealer, which is meant to bind chemically tightly to stone, seems unlikely to be transferred to cheese anyway. I did run it through the dishwasher before gluing on the backing foam. Yes, the square shape of the cheeseboard looks a little off. I had been sort of intending to cut mine to something like 7.5" x 12" (golden mean), but I didn't feel like filling the water tray of the wet saw. So, instead, I googled for images of slate cheeseboards, and saw enough square ones to decide to just go with it. The other "flaw" is that the edges are square. Most of the cheeseboards you see commercially have more rustic edges. I figured I would just whack the edges of my tile with a margin trowel or tack hammer, and spall the edges nicely. Well, it wasn't happening; I was just making small chips in the edge, rather than causing any of the lamellae to delaminate. I then decided that square edges were acceptable in a cheeseboard :-)

I will sometimes pick up a food magazine at the store if it looks interesting, and even buy it, but I don't make recipes out of them. I do occasionally make recipes out of Sunset, which always has a food section, but isn't a food magazine. Their recipes are extremely variable, but the ones I've chosen to make because they sounded like good recipes, actually were good. Their layouts also have interesting ideas. Come to think of it, when I was young, my mother gave me a couple of their compilation books and those were pretty good too. I was able to adapt a lot of recipes from the Mexican one, which she sent me while I was living abroad and foodily homesick, to the local ingredients which did not include tortillas (or way to make them at home), lettuce, pinto beans, etc. I like blog recipes. Not all, of course, but I've made or adapted many more recipes I've found on blogs than in magazines, and they've come out much better when they're for something I didn't previously have a clue on. The trick is, first and foremost, a great high speed connection so the photos load right away because I wouldn't be able to just sit there waiting for photo load, either. You can set your browser to skip the pictures, but there's a lot of information in them as you scroll down, so doing that isn't a perfect fix either. Given the connection, however, scroll down to the end where they either have a normally formatted recipe or link to it, or link to "printer friendly version". I often don't read the blog at all, or only go back and skim it when I've decided the recipe looks like what I want to make. Oh, I guess that's something to...I get recipes from blogs mostly when I have something I want to make and go searching for a good recipe. If I don't know what I want to make and just want to read about food, I open a book. :)

I would suggest Saveur. From your list, the only thing they don't do much on is the gadgets. Otherwise, they cover everything you're looking for.

I love Cooks Illustrated. Not a slick glossy mag, but the recipes are fool-proof and very detailed. It has what you're looking for about gadgets, etc. I received my first one as a gift years ago.

I like Cooks Illustrated, Fine Cooking, Food and Wine and Saveur. Self Magazine also has great cooking articles.

While the text accompanying features can be valuable and interesting, you can get the recipies from many magazines online. Projectfoodie.com (free) has the recipies for: Bon Appetit, Cooking Light, Gourmet, and Food and Wine. It also has the recipies for Cooks Illustrated, but those can only be accessed by subscribers.

My favorites are Fine Cooking and Saveur. I may get a subscription to The Art of Eating, pricey but want to check it out. I also like Bon Apetit and Gourmet.

Although I get 5 different cooking magazines (Cooks Illustrated, Fine Cooking, Country Cook, etc.) my favorite is Cooking Light. The recipes are almost always wonderful, and they don't do too much 'damage'. I use the others as well, but Cooking Light is the favorite.

I have stopped getting Gourmet and Bon Apetit and just get Fine Cooking and Cooks Illustrarted now, that's enough for me.

I really like Fine Cooking, and it covers all the things you mention. Saveur is eye-candy to me. They have terrific articles and gorgeous photography. I find I don't often cook from it, but I always learn something new from it. I consider it a kind of National Geographic for food.
Cooking Light has good recipes, but is too much into the makeup, spa, beauty thing for my tastes.

I took Bon Appetit for about 18 years, but when Fairchild became editor, it went down the tubes (or maybe to her head), IMO. On the flip side, I used to detest Gourmet as being too "uppity", but someone recently gave me about six month's worth and I discovered it's gone through a major style change over the years and is very approachable now.

If I could only read one, though? Fine Cooking.

I know what you mean about Saveur... just why I like it! But I probably only cook one recipe at most a month from it. Since I started relying on epicurious.com for Bon Appetit and Gourmet recipes, I don't subscribe to their magazines any more.

Every now and then, I succumb to a copy of Food & Wine at the newsstand and regret it due to the gobs of advertising. Hard to even find the articles. I have been an on-and-off subscriber to Gourmet for years. Last year, I started up again, and I see it has morphed into an advertising extravaganza, much like F&W. Very sad. I cancelled.

Cook's Illustrated is the only magazine I am eternally happy reading. Maybe that's because there are no ads...
