Toaster Oven update- Scam Alert!

A few of you shared opinions with me and others in a hunt for a better toaster oven to replace our fire starter Oster.

Well, I became interested in the infra red Panasonic that was mentioned by a couple folks. The problem that i ran into is it is out of production. Panasonic refers people to clearing type houses that sell liquidation stuff, etc.

After a ridiculous amount of searching, I found a relatively good price on a unopened box. I payed for the item and shipping via credit card and anticipated its soon delivery as the purchase was processed the same day.

As it turns, out I was scammed by a scam store front website and haven't heard a thing. They don't answer the phone, don't return emails and i found a few folks online that had similar stories to tell.

This stuff happens every day, but it's the first time for me in over 15 years of online purchasing. Creeps!

I put in a claim with the card company and cancelled the card. I teach computer classes in a community college and was told by a banker in one of my classes that a person should keep a low balance credit card open and only use that one for online purchases. I think I'll do that from now on.

Keep you eyes peeled for cartdiscounts.com. They advertise good prices for electronics, appliances, you name it. They come up alot during mechandise searches. Beware!

Thanks for the warning! These people should be shot!
I agree totally about keeping a separate card for online purchases! Very low risk that way.

Owbist, you know I have the highest respect for you and your wisdom. But, I disagree with a number of your points. I stick my English muffin in the toaster and push the button and know in approx. one minute I have my toast, ready for the butter. My DVD goes in the slot and I hit Play - there you go. I turn on my TV, flip channels and find the show I want to see. I don't want to configure my computers - I want them to work without shouting warnings, stopping me in my tracks with updates, scans, scans, scans...I don't understand a language with doesn't fit with mine - had to run a search to figure out why the 'new Word' kept double-spacing all my letters and I couldn't find the place to change the fonts. Ready for this? - Home-Editing-Styleset-Word 2003. Then to change fonts - Home, editing, style-set, scroll the list and choose. Then a window pops up saying "Changes have been made that affect the global template Normal.dotm. Do you want to save those changes? Would that be something the average user would understand? - I would never have figured it out myself, ever! There were so many steps, I had to write them all down. I would never remember that a week from now. I am so furious over MS changing Word, which I have used for years and now is the biggest headache anyone should have to deal with. Why should anyone have to know that IE should originate from Programs (I think) and not system 32? What the heck is system 32 (don't answer I'm not interested). The bottom line is the computer is not geared for the average user at all. It requires too many steps to get anything done eg. saving a document requires too many steps, setting up files and folders is so confusing for the average user they don't do it. They lose everything. It does not save time at all, requires much more time and concentration to get a simple task done. Unless you do something over and over again, you can't remember all the steps. It can be so frustrating, a truly negative experience. Most people I know only use the computer for email and looking around the web. I am forever being asked for help and really feel their frustrations and see how totally confused they are. They don't know what they are doing and when you explain something to them, they still don't get it. These are not idiot people. They are people who don't want to spend hours, weeks and months trying to figure out how they can download pictures without losing them. They don't want to learn a new language, be an electrician or programmer. They want to download a photo, send it in an email. They are confused by the language, the terms, the windows popping up. I have an appointment tomorrow, with another computer tech and will need to spend a lot of money to get my network (hardwired) working again. This has been an ungoing problem which has cost me so much money and time to find out why my machines refuse to share. They work together for a while and then quit and I've tried everything to no avail. I've had 3 different computer people work on this and no one has cured the problem. For what I've spent so far on this, I could have bought a new computer. Computers are not stable. When they work, they work well. When some glitch happens, everything stops. I'll take my toaster any day. Sorry for the rant, it's been a long day, Jane

Just curious - what is your oldest, working appliance?

There's a clock in a stove in a house that burned in a canyon near us; the burn was 15 years ago at least and the house is gone but the clock still works .... can that have honorary mention? I don't know how old it is though.... We fight with a half propane-half -geez I dunno, kerosene? - that part is gone -- range that predates 1950 every summer. Parents' waffle iron from the 40's still works. I want it but my mother gets very offended when I ask for it. Her grandkids will be too old to enjoy waffles soon.... I have a hand-held beater from the 60's. Love that thing. It's turquoise - what more could you want? It wont work unless you wear an apron. :)

Thanks Joann, Okay, this is a REALLY dumb question, but what then is a "food processor" used for? I have seen people use them, even for cookie dough (I think). I guess I don't really pay attention after all, otherwise I'd recall. But yes, a stand mixer. Thanks didn't know what to call the kind that sits on the counter and the bowl spins (or something) on. I recall my Grandma using one when I was a kid. She would also make cake batter in one too if memory serves. I took a look at KA's website and ooh some nice stand mixers ! :) I have to find a place for it to live if I get one. I do plan on putting up a pots and pan rack. I had one in my last home and LOVED it. I see no reason to not put one here in the new place. It would free up lots of cupboard space, but I just like being able to hang up stuff and let it air dry and not have pots "touching" each other and all. I'm weird I guess. Also, I plan to put some kind of slider storage or something to help utilize the vertical space in my one large lower cupboard that clearly has lots of wasted space right now. Then I would have a place for a stand mixer to live :) And then I could make cookies way easier. Not something I really need though :) :) But I LOVE to bring them to potlucks or to get-togethers. I have always had fun experimenting with different flavors and mixtures of chips and such. I once got obsessed with making the "perfect" chocolate chip cookie that suited my tastes (not too sweet, not too rich)... With baking your own I found it fun. Albeit I wasted alot of them when they didn't turn out the way I wanted. But it was fun. Gotta see if I pick up this habit again :) Thanks for the info about mixers. I guess if I were to get one, I practically wouldn't need a hand mixer any more? Or for small jobs are they good to keep around? Also, I guess I could make smashed potatoes as well in the stand mixer? I do find that when I want to make really creamy heavenly mashed potatoes I do find the hand mixer faster and easier. I have also many times made them with the hand masher. I got out of the habit of making them though. It was something I very commonly made when my ex was going thru cancer treatment. I guess we kinda od'd on them after awhile. But I had bought a "ricer" thingee to try but then never got around to trying it before I fell out of the habit. Also, can you use different mixing bowls of different sizes in the mixer stand? Or do mixers come with a bowl i.e. a SS bowl it seems? Or are there bowls that are mated to go with a stand mixer that you buy separately? Right now I do own several different mixing bowls. They're plastic, the kind with the rubber bases and the cool handles to grip it with. Probably not very advanced but you have to understand I've made cookie dough in a Tupperware bowl when I didn't know any better. I also tend to dislike the "feel" and noise of metal bowls. But I guess if one uses only wooden spoons or things like this funky rubber scaper/spatula thing I have I would avoid that? Thanks for answering all my dumb questions. I am very cooking and baking challenged :( Cheers, --jans

Tell me about your experience with Build.com?

Very disappointed in build with ferguson, Bulding.com. We are building a new home and purchased a large amount of bathroom fixtures for 2 bathrooms including sink, toilets and faucets and shower body. We were advised by our contractor to order ahead of time for the build . We have no control of build time , when building we are at the mercy of the contractor. Plumber goes to install trim kit today for the shower and discovered we were sent to wrong trim kit and it is missing an adapter. I understand that it is over 90 days , 2 problems that I cannot correct due to build with ferguson mistake. Build with ferguson will not take back and refund the item, which now I am out the money due to build with ferguson error for which, I had to go buy the correct trim kit with all parts included and complete so my shower can be completed.

Michael, I'm so sorry this happened to you. I do a lot of online shopping too, and this would toast my chips! I'm here mostly to respond, and to keep this going to the top for anyone else who might be considering this company for an online purchase.

Oh, that's just rotten! DH & I had to deal with identity theft in the spring. $2000.00 and some bounced checks later....We found out that something screwy was going on. Later on, we were notified by the company that there was a breach in security.

I'm glad you canceled your CC accounts. DH and I opened all new accounts and closed the old ones. The bank saw some charges in St. Louis and flagged them. Fortunately those we didn't have to pay for.

Sorry you have to deal with all these hassles.

CARP! I'm sorry to read this Michael.

Take a look at the link below, just a few reviews but all negative and all recent. The reviews include mention that the CartDiscounts site invites reviews but then has deleted all of them.

A few months ago I bought a stand mixer and was trying to buy a blender attachment for it (unfortunately the model has been discontinued but I love the mixer). I ordered at four different sites with a credit card for the blender attachment. Each site said the blender was available and then each one sent a another email or called me saying it was not available and refunded my money. By the third order I was calling to verify that the blender was in stock. My conclusion from this is that there are a lot resellers who connect their websites into larger distributing websites who drop ship the items to customers. The larger businesses must not keep an accurate inventory and must not notify all their linking sites soon enough. I was lucky not to get burned but by the time I had given my CC number out four times (a card I use only online) I was through. Still wish I could find the blender though - not even any on eBay.

I'm glad you got your card canceled. Maybe CD will be out of business soon.

Thanks for warning us.

Lee

Although I've never used it, IIRC my Citibank card has a feature where they issue you a fake/temporary card number that is good for just one purchase. They know to link it to your card, but it's useless to anyone but the intended recipient. Might be worth looking into again.

Hey,
I was also scammed by CD (or in the process of being scammed) - it was 10+ days ago - took my money, said item was shipped (via 2 day air) and then nothing...no tracking numbers, no response to emails..and no item...nothing...

I went to register.com and found the site owner. Im posting that info below for others (like myself) who's google search for "cartdiscounts scam" brings them to this blog.

Contact the FBI at www.fbi.gov, click on the "report internet crime" and file a report - maybe we can get this site shut down and "raymond barbour" thrown under the jail!!

your truly,
ripped off and pissed off
