Quickie Update on Wally's Bladder Cancer Consultation

Yesterday Mom and Wally met with the surgeon who their doctor referred them to. He's an assistant Professor at McMaster University and had an intern with him.

He spoke at length about what happens if the bladder has to come out. He does around 200 of these surgeries a year, so they feel very comfortable with his skills.

He's going to do a cystoctopy (something like that) on Wally to see himself what's going on. (The type of thing Wally had every 3 months with his regular doctor....who would then find the new tumours or not). That's scheduled for the 25th. If Wally has to have his bladder completely removed after that, I'll let you know.

So thanks for your thoughts and prayers. They seem to be working, since they were quite impressed with the Doc. :-)

It is wonderful he is able to find such a fantastic hospital and Doctor to go to. It really means a lot to find out you have such a great Doctor to take care of your medical needs.

Wally......I can already see you teeing off and just having a wonderful day with the family. Hugs and well wishes for you and the family!!

Thanks guys :) really appreciate the good thoughts. Actually Maggie, I'm in radio, and we do talk about it a little on the air, the guy I do the morning show with is a big animal lover, so we do a lot of dog and cat stories etc..What I really want to do is get with my primary vet, I haven't really talked to him since the initial rupture...I know that he is inclined to reccomend euthanasia for these type cancers :( as they are so aggressive. I just want to show him Bob, and offer my number to anyone contemplating what direction they want to go in. I have no regrets on what we did with Bob. He really suffered no ill effects to speak of from the treatment...His quality of life is excellent at the moment...I am also thinking about starting up a message board for this type of thing. I joined a cancer group on yahoo, but they were sooooo restrictive, and moderated everything, drove me nuts. Anyway I may have to look into that. Thanks again for all the well wishes, I can't tell you how grateful I am that he is doing so well, everyday when we go for our walks in the pasture, I see him galloping ahead of me:) I raise my head and say a little thank you :).

It's a personal decision and nobody - and I mean NOBODY - should push advice one someone dealing with cancer. It's her decision and hers alone. Thanks for sharing your experience, Chloe. I don't think anyone's pushing. I agree that it's a personal decision; when my co-worker chose a lumpectomy + radiation over a mastectomy and no radiation, it's not what I would have chosen, but that wasn't relevant. We arrive at our personal decisions by weighing information, and I think the experiences shared in this thread represent valuable information. I've printed them out and given them to her without comment--in fact, since she and I work different shifts, I simply left them on her desk. I have no idea at this point how she is (or isn't) going to proceed with treatment.

Low Platelet Count / Diharrea in lab puppy

Well, first of all, that platelet count is not that worrisome (or worriesome at all, actually). Most platelet counts result from a machine doing automated tests and do not alert a path review unless that platelet count is indeed what I would call low (less than 50,000)... or dangerously low (less than 25,000). I have even gotten platelet counts back at 15,000 with a comment about clumping platelets that did not warrant an alert. Platelets like to clump and that makes their numbers impossbile to count in automated systems. So those counts wouldn't even be worth mentioning normally and I would not lose sleep over them. You can always have a CBC with platelet count along with a specific path review done if you are still unconvinced. You certainly would not ever see symptoms of bleeding with platelet counts that high... even with counts as low as 20,000 the incidence of bleeding is probably rare, though it could occur more easily with trauma than it would with a normal count. Below that you would probably see problems. If his true count (non-automated) consistently registered below 50,000 to 75,000, then I would persue other diagnostics to see if there is some other disease causing a problem (poisoning, blood parasites, drug reaction, cancer etc.). Lower numbers would be more worrisome and associated with immune diseases, overwhelming infection, inflammation etc. But your dog's counts are no where near these levels. If you still want to follow up on your dog's lab work, an internal medicine specialist is where you would want to go (very commonly available around here, but rare in some areas of the country). Secondly, bladder infections are NOT common in laboradors (or any dogs for that matter at a young age, though they do occur). As a veterianrian for over 26 years now, I think I have seen 2 bladder infections in male lab puppies... one with a ton of bladder stones, too. Female puppies get bladder infections a lot more often (less distance to bladder from the outside world) but still, I would not say it is common, and certainly not more common in labs than other breeds. I asked the vets I worked with (I work at a large hospital in California) and few can think of any lab puppies they have seen with bladder infections (most had never seen a male lab puppy with a bladder infection). But it does happen sometimes (obviously). The diarrhea problems (not spelled diharrhea by the way) have many potential causes, but it sounds like you are on the right tract to having them worked out. They can be very frustrating as there are so many reasons for diarrhea and many require different treatments and not all treatments work. As they mature, most dogs eventually settle down and get over it as long as there is not some glaring problem that has been missed.

Hi jas, I note that in my earlier story I hadn't mentioned that my PSA test as ordered by my general practitioner was something like 18.6 (and I think that I heard 18.7 once: but that seems rather like a distinction with very little actual difference). I don't remember how long it had been since my earlier test, or what the number(s) may have been, earlier. They hadn't troubled him, apparently. That test result got him to get a referral to a urologist ... and I don't know what interval was involved, but it wasn't long. I wasn't worried, so the doc must have allayed whatever fears I may have had (and you may know from prior experience that I'm not a big-time worrier). Had my doc had substantial concern about the situation, from what I've heard about our system, it is very likely that I'd have had an appointment with little delay. Remember, please, that my urologist said that 80% of guys over 80 have it... but die WITH it, not OF it. Which, while it may be one doc's opinion, should not be taken lightly, I figure. During my almost two months of every weekday radiation through January and February I had some (bright red) blood in urine a few times. It got my son somewhat fussed ... but therapists said it was not unusual and the sight of a little blood doesn't bother me substantially. In mid-August, at my six-month check-up, the PSA was 0.5 ... so the cancer doc says that I'm in remission ...and when he's happy: I'm happy! You may note the change in his terminology: when he was recommending the radiation, the term that he used was "cure" ...and now it's "remission". After a number of six-month check-ups ... would maybe a half dozen? remissions may add up to a (more or less) cure? Or would it require 10, after the full 5 years? I guess I'll wait to worry about that later ... if I'm still around to worry. Good wishes to you two, as you deal with your current issue over this. ole joyfuelled

I'm glad Wally is getting good medical care. My prayers are with him.
My good friend's husband had bladder cancer a few years ago. They removed his bladder and rebuilt another one. He is cancer free and healthy now. The new bladder works like normal. I know this sounds crazy, but I think they used a pig bladder to make his new one. I'll have to check with her to see.

MaryAnn......wow, I wish they'd put a pig bladder in Wally. There's definite talk about removing his bladder, and what he can expect, having a bag. I should look into the pig bladder surgery to see if it's available in Ontario.

One of my clients at work has bladder cancer and is having surgery tomorrow to remove it. They are rebuilding a bladder for him out of part of his bowels! I had no idea they could do that!

Ole Joyful, you're so thoughtful to bring this up front again.
It's fantastic seeing the support and wishes from this group. So many of us have our own health problems, and it feels so good to receive these best wishes.
Susan, we live in Kitchener and my parents in Waterloo, so not far from Hamilton, where he has to go.

Wally's never been sick a day in his life, and has never been to the hospital for anything, doesn't take medications, until he got his bladder problems. Then he had day-surgery a few times. He's gearing himself up for 7 days in the hospital, but he doesn't know what he's going to do all that time. He can't imagine himself that long in a hospital. But he's positive, which is good, of course.
