I want to rescue a kitty

I have three healthy cats already at home, but in the parking lot at my work there is a cat that looks like he was tossed from a moving car (the lot is right next to the highway). He has what looks like road rash on his head behind his ear, and in the last week it has healed some but it needs to be looked at.

He is the sweetest, friendliest kitty, he comes right up to you and lets you pet him and let me examine his wounds, so he seems domesticated. He gets fed by several employees, so he is being well fed. The problem is I don't want to just bring him home without knowing if he has FIV or other diseases that can infect my cats. If he is good to go, I will end up keeping him.

There will be a MASH unit (mobile animal hospital) that does spaying and neutering and will give him all his shots, take care of his wound and test for feline diseases at a discounted charge, I cannot afford to take him to my vet for all of that, but the MASH unit won't be here until 5/19, another 10 days away.

I have a room at home he can be in by himself until then, but is that safe enough for my cats, not being allowed contact but having him in the house? I want to get him out of the parking lot ASAP, I know he wants to be loved and know he isn't feral.

Please let me know what the best thing to do is. My cats obviously come first and I can't risk infecting them by bringing him home, but I don't know how feline diseases are contracted.

i can't give you any advice (although i am sure others will chime in very soon) but i just wanted to say thanks for rescuing this little guy. he is SO lucky to have found you!!

I'd think it would be safe;
more direct contact is required for most diseases to spread.

Bless you for taking in this little one.

I keep finding myself checking out the rescued cats that the ASPCA places in the local pet stores. Some of them are so appealing but I haven't seen the perfect one yet for Ginger. Also I remember the knot in my stomach when I added up the first bills from the vet and they were over a thousand dollars. I think I will hold off for a little while if possible. Maybe Ginger will get a late Xmas present from the ones that were gifts for some one who decided they were not meant to have pets. I know some of you are dead set against indoor/outdoor cats. I know in most cases it is for the best if they are strictly indoor cats but Ginger was a stray and short of a miracle I don't think I can change that. So far she has observed our property line except for one case recently when she got curious about the noises going on in a neighbor's house. She took only a quick peek and came back quickly. She spends a lot of time lounging on the brick wall in front of the house watching the kids at play across the street. She is always there when the High School a block away lets out for the day and she watches all the big kids go by. Ditto for the runners and dog walkers. She seems to have favorites although she doesn't let them too close. Pookie used to do that. Yesterday, I was watching her waiting for the school bell. She suddenly was looking up in the trees for some reason and it quickly became apparent why when she started ducking the hickory nuts being thrown at her. The squirrels wanted her GONE! She was interrupting their search for food to store for the winter. She tries to ambush them but they are too quick and there are too many to keep watch for her. The number of squirrels, moles, chippers and rabbits is terrible here. They do a lot of damage. Our driveway partly collapsed because the chippers dug out so many tunnels and nurseries under it. I hope they don't all figure out she only wants to play catch and release. Perhaps they will look for less threatening territory. I do keep things as safe as possible for her and the vet is becoming used to my precautions. The worst worry is the raccoons. As amusing as they are, I would wish them gone. They don't have the good manners of the ones in Wisconsin and I worry about diseases. I haven't noticed any sick ones, but they seem to be prime vectors when something is going around.I keep trying to educate the neighbors about the raccoons but they still keep putting their dogs out at night and you can tell when the raccoons go through because of the dogs barking. "How did you do that? That is amazing! Especially the way they are "posed". Very good capture!!" Knowing more about cats than I do photography, the saying "harder than herding cats" comes to mind. My cat consistently does the opposite of anything it thinks I want it to do. It must have required either a little planning and alot of patience, or a lot of luck. Either way, the capturing of it was great camera work!

Cat mom and all, no one's saying the cat WOULD become a biter but only there is a real RISK of aggression problems or other personality changes. Is it worth the risk when there may be options with a more certain or sure outcome? The point is you shouldnt think of it as a "last resort," because there is a real chance it would NOT solve the problem. How I manage a similar situation is to do sort of a time share - my old 20 yr old cat stays in the bedroom 8 am - 8 pm, then gets the run of the house 8 pm- 8 am when I put the new cats downstairs in the basement (there's couches and stuff downthere and I feed them when they go downstairs so they have pleasant associations. What makes this work is that its so highly routine - cats just LOVE routine and predicatability, same things happening at the same time each day. What was NOT working was just trying to keep them separate in random, unpredictable ways. Everyone has settled down knowing they each have their own space and own times for occupying the "common area." In the wild, cats often make these same types of arrangments to "time-share" an area. If youre not up for that.... do consider finding another home. Ive done it many times, found home for cat in an unfortunate situation. There is a way of screening people and making sure its a good home - I could tell you more if you want. There's always the long difficult process of getting cats used to each others smell, and build up their tolerance for each other. But Im thinking because the ragdolls are so passive and unable to defend themselves (are they? Ive never had one) that might actually be triggering the other cat's dominance and urge to drive them out of the territory. Nature and feline territorial behavior is not pretty sometimes. In my case I decided I just could NOT put my old 20 yr old cat, deaf and arthritic, through the attacks she was getting from the 1 young new cat I brought into the house. She could not defend herself and she was literally getting knocked down, clawed, bitten and terrorized and she started peeing out of the box she was so freaked out. Now, Im happy to report, she is feeling secure again and her old self.

My cat's nails used to snag the sofa when she walked on it, though she never intentionally clawed the furniture. Next time you go to the vet, ask to have them show you how closely you clip the claws. It's possible you aren't clipping close enough. Also you might want to use a regular cat claw clipper instead of a human style clipper. Maybe then the claws will have fewer snags. You could also get a pretty throw and put it across the loveseat for now. I know he uses his clawing post, but another thing our cat loves is the cardboard clawing box, the one that sits flat on the floor, you put a little catnip in it to pique the kitty's interest. Just a Christmas idea for His Majesty. Get the velour seat; leather is too cold. Aerobeds are pretty tough, so I don't think you need to worry about that. If he did puncture it, it would just deflate. Don't get kitty declawed.

Last year I had a similar situation with a stray. I kept him quaranteened in my daughters room until I could get him into the vet. It was several days and everyone in the house was fine. Maybe you could call your vets office and explain the $ situation, and why you are using the MASH unit. I am sure they will be happy to tell you if anything is passed airborne. Or maybe you could call your local shelter and asked about airborne transmission.
Poor guy is lucky you found him before anything else happens. Thank you for saving him!!!

I believe distemper is airborne(?), and URI's are by nature as well, but a lot of the biggies seem to require direct contact. I would bring him inside asap (if he's healthy/uninfected with anything now, you want to keep him that way). This way he will be safe.

Maybe you could bring him to your vet just to run a titer test for distemper, rabies.... (and explain the situation like homebodymom suggests), and then keep him quarantined in your home until he can be fully checked out by the MASH unit.

It's a wonderful thing that you plan to do!

When we got our last cat, I kept the kitten in a closed bedroom until I could get to the vet. When I called the vets for the appt, they said that wouldn't prevent my other cat from contracting things. I believe FIP is very hard to get out of a house once its in there, not sure about feleuk, etc.

Good luck & bless you for caring for an abandoned cat. We TNR'd a feral cat years ago & I could never bring her in due to other cats in the house, she is now 6+ yrs old, & doing great.

There is always a risk when bringing a new cat into your home. Upper respiratory infections like calicivirus are airborne and can spread like wildfire, even with confinement. We have rescued several cats. The last time, all our cats got a very bad upper respiratory infection and all had to have antibiotics, even though the rescue cat was constantly confined. That was expensive. The vet said confinement was no help to an airborne virus. The other times we only had to deal with ear mites and fleas. I'm not saying to leave the cat in the parking lot. Local rescue groups might help or have advice. A local group once loaned us a 2 story wire cat condo for a few weeks. I just wish we'd set it up in the basement instead.

My husband used to work with pets, and I was always concerned about the possibility of spreading infections and diseases to our own pets. Most of the time, if you keep the stray confined your other cats should be OK. Make sure you thoroughly wash your hands and any area you may have touched the cat with before handling your own cats. I would think its better to bring the stray indoors if you can. Once he has been checked out, if there were any problems that were potentially contagious, then I would get your other pets checked right away.

Hoping the best for you, and I think its wonderful that you are giving this poor guy a wonderful new home!!!
