-20% for being a loser! did you see what a teacher

wrote on a kids paper? I guess he's been calling her a loser

all year. He sounds like a loser. You don't write that on a kids paper. She is in the 6th grade in a middle school in North Carolina. Several parents are defending him, but they refused to say it on camera.

Children don't need teachers that call them names. No one does.

Hey All - Old thread eh?! Well I got the Samsung french door counter depth fridge which is the FRG238 (identical to the more easily found 237 w/ only difference being that there's ice below in the freezer as well as in the door). It's only been a couple of days but so far - knock on wood - I'm CRAZY psycho in love. Granted I'd been using a 1990 18.2 cu. ft. freezer-on-top standard fridge w/ no space in the door for a gallon of milk and old-fashioned ice trays in the freezer! Also, the contractor doesn't start work on the kitchen (partial remodel) till Monday or Tuesday so until he arrives, I don't have the water and ice function yet...they need to hook the fridge up to the water from the basement I think. Anyway, I feel like a queen. Maybe most of you are used to such luxuries but I'm sure as heck not. I love how the freezer door handle bends up a bit when you pull on it - it makes opening it a lot easier. I love the two shelves and dividers in the freezer and the little skinny-things pop down tray by the door entry as well. I love all the adjustable shelves and how much SPACE there is compared to what I had before...and this is counter-depth! Only 4.5 or so more cubic feet but the layout makes it like it's 6 or 7 more cubic feet. I love that I could have 3 gallons of milk (or more?) in the door if I wanted. I love that the ice/water in door doesn't take up much room. I love the deli tray w/ its adjustable temp. settings. I love the digital display and the blue lights and cool chiming sounds. Love the child lock and door alarm and that I could turn off the ice makers if I don't need them (I think individually if I only want ice from in the door for example) and I love knowing that if we have more people over than usual we'll have extra ice since there are 2 ice-makers. I love how I rarely how to bend down anymore (I use the fridge space more than freezer). I didn't think I would, but I already love the wine holder and the pop holder. I love how quiet it is (haven't yet heard ice drop which I expect to be sort of loud - at least if the tray's open). And lastly, the look. It's so, so pretty. Ok. Now we wait. We wait and see how the water/ice will be. And then we wait some more and see how long it lasts before having problems. The reviews are great. Even consumer reports has updated their fridge ratings and gives Samsung high marks now. They don't mention this model for some reason but I think that's a fluke since the other ones they mention are identical except just not counter-deep - and also cause this particular model gets better reviews than any of their other models, everywhere else. Oh so btw I paid somewhere around $2300 at Lowe's when they just had a sale combined w/ my using a 10% off coupon. After that I paid another $200 or so for a 5 year warrantee. Lowe's is the only store, as far as I know, that offers the RFG238 (dual ice) as opposed to RFG237 which can be found at most other stores. Thanks - sorry this was so long.

As evidenced by my other threads, I'm at the site almost every day, as I only live two miles away and pass it going to/from shopping etc. It's a spec town home being built in the builder's development, and they have a great policy of letting you visit as often as you wish, as long as you suit up in a hard hat. Now I also have to pick up a key since it's done enough to be locked down when workers aren't there. I've taken full advantage of this policy and have videotape and photos of everything behind the walls and even of the shared wall with the next door unit, as well as detailed photos from every stage of the build. I've also caught a couple of incorrect things early, like an incorrectly placed hose bib, so they were able to be corrected before it became a lot of time and trouble later. Because I don't own the home yet, I can't really tell the workers what to do. I say "hello" and chat with them about their work if they bring it up themselves, but mostly I try to stay out of their way. Still, it's handy to be there sometimes, like when the electrician was putting in the hot tub box, as he had a question that it was easiest to ask us (we paid for that added work, so I felt comfortable talking to him about the specs). Even though I have some minor bones of contention with the builder at the moment, overall the policy of letting me have unlimited access to the construction site has given me a lot more confidence. I marvel at people who don't get a good look before the final walk-through, as that's much too rushed and stressful of a time to get a good look at everything. I plan to go through by myself a few days before that so I can test and scrutinize things at my leisure. That way, I'll know exactly where to focus on that final day.

I watched it, but wondered how the photos of the dead teacher were already printed out. Wouldn't the police have taken his camera when they caught him at the scene? I can't resolve that in my mind. Other than that, I liked it. Did you notice that his female partner's husband (who lied to her about why he was late) once played a horrific murderer in a Law & Order episode. He killed his girlfriend, her daughter, and the husband and wife employers of the girlfriend. I'm going to have a hard time getting past that character.

As the mother of a teacher, I will offer one piece of advice - do not buy "Favorite Teacher" or "#1 Teacher" type items like mugs, magnets, picture frames, tree ornaments, jewelry, etc. I truly understand that some children go shopping for their teacher and pick out these type of things and that is all they can afford, but responsible parents like you can prevent some of this. I truly do understand and sympathize with the feelings of so many, that it's great to have parents chip in and buy a useful gift, or it's great to get teachers something they can use for the classroom. And if that's the way teachers and parents feel, of course that's a perfectly fine way to go. But I'd like to present the other side. The side of the young mothers who do let their kids give home baked gifts and buy trinkets like #1 Teacher. When my kids were little, they were so excited about Christmas. They loved to bake cookies for the teacher and buy #1 Teacher mugs/figures, etc. We were on a very tight budget, and my kids did not want to give a group gift, they wanted to give their own gift. As a young mother, once I realized how many useless gifts teachers got, I started adding a "useful" gift along with my kids' "useless" gifts. It seemed to disappoint my kids in a subtle way, like their terrific gift they picked so carefully wasn't good enough to stand alone. One day I started really listening to my kids, and they were so convinced that candy was the greatest gift ever, not hand sanitizer for the classroom. You know, I was one of those "responsible" parents, but I regrouped and let my kids just give candy, or homemade cookies, or a tacky teacher mug. I looked down at that little excited face, so passionately explaining that there is no way the teacher will like soap as well as chocolate, and I bought the chocolate. Some teachers do like to have their room representative take up a collection for a group gift. I always wound up taking up the collection myself if I was room rep for a teacher who wanted that. I'm not knocking teachers or parents who want to give/get something useful rather than another plate of cookies. I don't think there is any right or wrong way to gift a teacher. Pick whichever way you like, or both. But not all moms who let their children give useless trinkets are irresponsible. My children had wonderful, wonderful, wonderful teachers. I loved them so much and still do. Some of my kids' elementary school teachers are Facebook friends, even after all these years. I tried to always be supportive in any way I could, and they have always been so very supportive of me. As my children got older, they understood the concept of useful gifts better, and they chose "better" gifts. They also sometimes wrote their former teachers notes telling them how much they enjoyed being in their classes. Entirely on her own with no prompting from me, my daughter baked cookies for her favorites, brought them coffee from Starbucks or biscuits from Chick-Fil-A with money she worked hard to earn herself. She also wrote lovely thank you notes for teachers who helped her with her college essays and wrote college recommendations. Maybe she would have done that anyway, but I think she "caught" the joy of giving to her teachers as a little girl. Because she chose the gifts she liked when she was little, she was more invested in the process. When I worked in the corporate world, I got wonderful gifts from some of my clients. Flowers delivered, gift certificates for meals at nice restaurants, funny posters, etc. Fast forward many years later, and I now work in the field of adult literacy. My "clients" are now mostly people not living in favorable circumstances. I can now attest that the most useful, beloved, treasured gift is to have a student call and leave a message on my cell phone, "Miss Daisy, I passed my test!!!!!! I couldn't have done it without you!!!!! Thank you sooooooo much for all you did!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you did for me. Miss Daisy, I loooooooooove you!!!!" That is better than flowers or gift certificates. There is nothing my students could buy me that is better than getting an excited hug from a former addict with prison tats on her arms, who is clean and getting her life together and who passed her test. I would rather have that than a solid diamond bracelet. When my kids were in school I still donated kleenex, hand sanitizer, post-it notes and the like. I wrote thank you notes and gave "useful" gifts at the end of the school year or during teacher appreciation week. But I don't regret letting my kids get those dime store gifts at Christmas or make those cookies, even if the teachers threw them out as soon as they got home. I am now the one spending my own money for some of my supplies. It's expensive. I think it's great for parents or anybody to donate useful things for the classroom. But please don't label as irresponsible a young mother who lets her little girl give yet another World's Greatest Teacher mug.

I remember in 6th grade the teacher asked a question.I raised my hand I knew the answer ,I was excited I knew the answer HE stopped everything and gave me a speach in front of all the kids saying Im just a drop in the bucket.
Then in 3rd year The teacher had a bunch of kids sitting around a table.She was having us all read.She stopped and made fun of the way I read that.I said my last teacher said I read good.she said no you dont you cant read.I remember I hated her ever since.

I spent hours on a drawing I did in the thrid grade... the teacher accused me of lying.. she said that my mom had to have
done it for me. Mom didn' .. I worked hard and thought it
was a wonderful picture of one of Grandma's dahlias.

i don't remember much from elementary, but being called a
flat out liar by one of my teachers... ive never ever forgotten that.

I still cry or almost cry when I think about my sixth grade teacher telling me the afternoon of our big concert (all schools) in a big downtown auditorium that she didn't want me to sing but just mouth the words and turn the pages for the other kids. My mom had made me a new dress and I was so excited....until then. I didn't go.
I know I have a terrible voice but didn't until then but I love to sing.

In my area, a bus driver duct-taped a kid's mouth for talking on the bus. He's been fired. Hope that teacher gets the same thing. Sticks and stones may hurt my bones...

-20% means she got 80% which is generally a B grade. So I guess I am the only one seeing the irony.

Every story has 3 sides...... what one person said,what another said and the truth. We are only being told one side.

By the sixth grade some teachers get creative with staying connected to their students. If he just singled out the one girl I would agree it was wrong. But if the rest of his class "gets" his humor it may just be a mother's problem. No one has said anything about how the girl feels. She may be fine with it and the mother may be a bigger problem than the teacher.

One of my son's favorite teachers was a male who was similar in his speech. He related to the kids by adopting their "tude. Not all the time but enough to lighten things up. All the kids loved him and they really learned from him because they listened.

There is a big difference in calling someone a loser and the way middle school kids are apt to use it joking around with each other. There is "you loser" LOL and then there is you are nothing but a loser. Loser used alone usually means the former. Even grown men in the workplace are apt to use the term as long as the PC police aren't around. It's humor.

This sort of reminds me of that movement telling teachers they could no longer use red ink to grade papers because the red ink was too aggressive and harmful to self-esteem or some BS. They were instructed to use purple or some other color because it was "friendlier".

Wildchild, I cannot think of any way for a teacher to write "loser" on a paper would be ok. That is unprofessional, to say the least.

Well reports are coming out that the girl is receiving texts and facebook threats from her peers.

The mother herself is responsible for making her DD into the real loser. Stupid stupid woman should have kept the media out of it. She could have simply asked for a transfer before getting her panties in a wad and going to the media. She has ruined her DD's social life for the next 3 years all because she doesn't get sarcasm or humor.I feel so bad for the little girl.

Seems to be no father in this picture either. Just the sketchy looking mother.

Kids on Facebook.com/news13 are blogging that they adore this teacher and he jokes with everyone.

Sorry, I don't agree that the teacher is staying connected with his students.

I still cringe when I remember my eighth grade teacher saying in a voice for all to hear "What! You don't know how to divide fractions?" Put me off math for the rest of my school years. I wasn't the only one who was the target of this man. Another student had trouble with spelling and received a similar nasty remark. Wound up my mother, and four other mothers went to the principal's office to complain about his method.

Just reading what he said does make it hard to decide, as we don't know the tone he used. In my case and the other four students it was sheer mockery and downgrading.

There are two sides to every story, and I'm sure there may be more to this than meets the eye, but an honestly good teacher would not write comments like that on a school assignment. Also, just because alot of kids like this guy doesn't mean he is a good teacher. And for goodness sake, Wildchild, what does not having a father in the picture have to do with anything?

I can't believe anyone would defend this jerk!! Why should the kid have to uproot herself and transfer, and I agree with Barb on what the heck difference does it make if the child has father in the picture? The teacher is the adult, should be professional, and is way out of line.

As obvious from previous posters, the cruel things that teachers did when they were young still bothers them years later. I myself had my share of sadistical teachers, and the remarks still sting over 40 years later!!

I think all of us with children have dealt with teachers/children problems. I don't agree with what the teacher wrote, but not with texing etc sometimes a small problem blows out of proportation. I personally would not tell the world about it, but the damage has been done and I think Mom should keep her mouth shut to the world. Mom should have talked to the principal/teacher/board of education, not the world.

A male perspective might have kept emotional mommy from running to the press for one.

This teacher has been teaching for 12 years at that school without complaints. All the kids seem to love him. He nicknames all the kids and they call him T-Rex. The other students have posted that he writes "loser" on papers are done well. Many of the students he teaches are gifted. He has never put derogatory statements are papers that are lacking. They have also said that he is the one teacher that will go the extra mile to help students having trouble with their work. They say he jokes a lot but knows when to get serious. They have a lot of respect for him and past students ave posted they learn from him.

The problem seems to be with just this one parent.

I just love the way the media has played this. That is NOT a failing paper. The picture of the girl looks to be a few years old. Her Facebook profile shows a normal almost teen wearing make-up, big earring etc. not a little kid who looks around 8. LOL

A friend of the girl's post hints strongly that the girl wasn't upset. It was her mother that was.

What kind of mother takes it to the media and causes her poor child to be the subject of ridicule? She could have handled it with the school and the teacher directly. That child will forever be known in that community as the one whose mommy went on TV to air her grievance because of perceived hurt feelings.

The whole thing has gone viral on the net with a country judging a man on the basis of a "human interest" media clip.

The teacher has apologized to the mother. now it's time for her to apologize to many, starting with her DD.

I am in no way convinced that this teacher is "loved by all" except by this student. I would bet serious money that he's had trouble with other kids, and that he probably picks on insecure kids and butters up the more popular kids. I have seen many, many teachers who do that. I have seen (in my area), teachers who have been convicted of inappropriate sexual behavior towards students, and STILL have lots of students sticking up for them and singing their praises.

Kids are not always emotionally developed enough to understand that most people who are inappropriate in some situations are appropriate in other situations and in other relationships. They think that if their own experience is positive, or even if it just isn't negative, that there can't be a problem elsewhere. And, there are more dynamics that play into situations play out- too many to go into here.

There is no way a caring professional shouldn't see that he was hurting that child. He was completely inappropriate and unprofessional- even abusive, and it's not helpful to distract from his behavior by blaming the mother. This guy does a disservice to all the good teachers out there.

If what you are saying is true Wildchild , it does look like a case of (once again) the media picking and choosing their facts and looking more like the National Enquirer.
I am not defending this teacher but I do understand what happened if what you have discovered, is true.

I've noticed the kids constantly call each other names at school whether they have done something well or not. Sure they congratulate each other but it has been a regular way of talk for several years to hear them use derogatory language to praise each other. I personally think its immature, but, they are immature.

Maybe this gal had been doing poorly and by getting an 80% he gave her -his idea of a high five and it went over like a rock with her mom. I don't know, but I suspect the whole picture is not being presented. IMO, the teacher should come up with his own ideas of praise and leave the slang to the kids to grow out of.
In it's own way it's funny but in this instance I can see where the teacher was taking his chances and it backfired.
I remember the word LOSER becoming common when the movie Shrek first came out. I had the theme song on my cell phone.
