A bird came for lunch

We went out to lunch at the Golden Corral

It was the busiest day I've ever seen there...The line coming in never got any shorter...continued to come in...

Denny and I were sitting right on the other side of one of the walls with windows (not to the outside..just a divider)

Movement caught my eye...there was a black bird sitting on the top of that dividing wall...

Suddenly it took off, trying to fly out the windows...People were screaming...like the bird was going to attack them or something...

The manager had one of those dustpans that open to sweep the dirt into and then closes...He was trying to catch it in that dust pan...with a broom in his other hand....as if...LOL

I heard one of the waitresses say they had called animal control...How funny.

After it tried to escape and scared all the people it flew back to it's perch by us...I guess it liked us best...

I didn't mind it being there ,but I didn't want it to poop in my soup..LOL

WalMart generally has sparrows, in the summer, flying around.

Glad no poop in the food :o)

I've seen it too inside Menards or other stores too. Never a eating place though! I hate birds inside! They freak me out.

THANKS, Jodi and Elizabeth! I have the surgery scheduled for Feb 4. They try to get their patients out within 48 hours so they do not pick up infection in the hospital. To get out, I will need to be able to walk across the room with a walker or crutches and go up 2 steps. Having been through cartilege removal surgeries a couple of times, I have heard that the total replacement is not much worse. They will call me on Friday to tell me what time to show up in the morning. My girlfriend and I are going to a big Garden show In Tacoma the day before, then out to lunch for a blow out, LOL. After that they may as well put me to sleep and get it over with! I will be confined to home for the next month of so, as long as I need any help with housekeeping, or my own care. If I leave home for other then Dr my help will be cut off, so I will count on you guys to keep me entertained. The surgeon is extremely good, and I have talked to a number of people who have done really well under him and see it as a very positive experience. We are starting with the left knee, and will leave the more complicated right knee until fall so I can get my gardening in. Dr says I should be back in the garden by early MArch, so that is a goal I can work toward. This is a new improved form of the surgery where they do not cut through the quad muscle but go in from the side under it, so it heals much faster and without as much pain. I am really looking forward to being able to work without pain in my garden and business...it has been 28 years since this started with tearing the cartilege in my right knee. Tore the left one 7 years ago just walking across flat ground! So I hope to be home to my laptop computer and recliner and have some time between pain med sleepiness, and therapy, by Wed or Thurdays after the surgery. And yes, I am excited about the possibilites of being able to work without pain before long! A goal worth working toward!

konrad: Thanks. I've noticed quite a few red-tails sitting in trees on the side of Route 1 in Chester County, PA (Route 1 is a 4-lane lightly used road here). The hawks stare into the grass median, and when they see something, they are quite focused on their prey. In fact, I had to slow down to miss one that was flying into the median. Claire: I remember reading a post here about bluebirds going to a window to ask for food. That was when I first started watching the birds. Well, I thought it was someone's imagination--until I realized it wasn't. There was a time when a mother mockingbird kept screaming at me until I chased a cat from near her nest. When I was feeding the birds regularly, the white-throats, upon seeing me, would jump up from the brush, land in the bushes, and sing to me. Probably the most amusing was when the male and female red-bellied woodpeckers--whom I always call red and rosie--landed in a tree on the side of the house and started shouting at me. I looked at the feeder with mixed nuts and saw it was empty. Once I filled it with their mixed nuts (they like the white ones and always search for them), they left me alone and ate their nuts. Here is something you may wish to try with mockingbirds. While in the yard, I may discover a mockingbird nest by observing the parents repeatedly going towards the same general area. The parents will first land on a nearby branch and look at me. This is where I must obey their rule. When the parent looks at me, I must turn away from the parent. I usually turn my back to them. Then, the parent heads for the nest and I hear the happy chirp of the chicks being fed. I don't know if this is a learned mockingbird trait or if it is instinct. However, the parent will fly away unless I look away while they go to the nest. I've been obeying their rule for years now.

AB, I wish I could've witnessed the guy in the red suit as he first tried to get into da plane. That would've been just as amusing. Poor guy, getting himself into a dither in front of an entire town. And talk about horse power. Those elegant creatures added an element of beauty and magic to the occasion. Well the flower form eliminates Mulberry and Crab Apple. Both cherry and almond are Prunus species so my suggestion still stands. It will not show fruit until the flowers are pollinated. And the seeds are the pits inside the fruit. When it leafs out perhaps you could show us a picture of a leaf or two.

Years ago, we were on vacation in Colorado. We were having dinner at a western restaurant of some sort. The place had a pretty fireplace. The fire had just started when about 40 small to medium black birds dropped in from the chimney and into the restaurant. The flew everywhere. I went crazy trying to save them from the fire and from the hot coffee surface where they kept landing. The kept smacking into windows... Oh, just so very sad. People were horrible. They would smack them away or kick those that landed on the floor. I was having a fit over this! I can't stand cruelty and there was no reason to hurt them. They were very confused and not hurting anyone, just trying to find a way out. Only a handful of people were helping get them out. I think they might have been nesting or finding shelter in the chimney and came in when they felt the heat.

I feel sorry for the birds that get stuck inside a store or restaurant. I would have been upset too Orie.

If the bird won't fly to an open window or door, throw a towel over the bird, .. then he can be carried outside without injury (hopefully).

At our local Walmart recently they had 2 birds inside. The lady working there told me they had to be very careful getting them out,they could be fined a lot of money. She said it probably would cost about $800.00 to get them out.Think about buying something at Walmart and getting it home and birdie poop on it. YUK

I onced worked at a nice restaurant and a bat came down the fireplace. People were pretty nervous about it and every so often it would fly around the room. I was bringing a tray of meals to a table when people shouted at me that it was right behind me. I looked and there it was, I would love to see a video of this waitress, (ME) running through the dining room carrying this big tray full of plates of food. LOL fortunately it didn't catch me, and the food was delivered unharmed, just maybe a little cooler that it should have been. Dottie

Isn't it strange how people can get so worked up about a tiny thing that wouldn't harm them at all? I think it's just that the situation doesn't fit into any category our little brains can handle.

About 10 years ago I had a hummingbird find it's way into the house. I had always heard that if you toss a towel over the bird, you can get it safely outside without injury. But I was pretty sure that didn't include hummingbirds - they are so small I was sure that would injure it. So, we turned out the lights and closed the drapes in the room it was in and turned the lights on in the next room. And it flew into that room. Repeated this procedure until we came to the garage. Once it was in the garage, we opened that door and it flew outside.

When I go to the mall, I almost always see birds inside, near the skylights, trying to get out. I wonder how they get out,if ever. I once saw a robin strutting arouind the floor of the food court, people were feeing it.
