How often do you clean the outside of your windows?
Comments (10)I usually do a full window clean in the spring. I clean the outside, inside, screens and all the inside tracks and such. I use a special window "wooly" and squeegee with a rubber blade (this is important not plastic). Mine are similar to these from Lee Valley linked. I start by removing the screens - put them aside to be cleaned. I have a bucket ready to wash the glass. 1 capful dishwashing liquid & 1/2 cup of vinegar in a 1/2 bucket of water (approx 1 gal). I vacuum all the inside tracks (where the screens go) and then clean them all with a q tip. Spiders get in there and it's kinda' gross. I have casement windows so screens mount inside. I dip my wooly washer in the solution and scrub the window. Work the edges and corners well. For inside the window, I dip the wooly washer and then wring it out and clean the same. I place a towel on the floor inside to catch any stray water. After you've scrubbed the window clean - place the squeegee in the top left corner. Pull down applying light pressure. I wipe the blade after each pass. Keep moving across the window overlapping approx. 1" onto already cleaned glass. You can squeegee top to bottom or left to right - whichever works better for you. I wash my screen with mild detergent (I use Shaklee Basic H2 but I'm sure you could use a small amount of dish soap). I also add a little vinegar. Rinse them off good and allow to dry. I either rinse outside with the hose or in my walk in shower with the hand held shower head. That's my routine. I'd like to clean them in the Fall too but for now, once a year is what I do. Nothing nicer than clean windows :) Here is a link that might be useful: window washing tools...See MoreCleaning Service--what do you have them do?
Comments (31)Interesting topic. I have had a single lady do entire house by herself. She left b/c it made more $en$e for her to work in a team and I was also growing tired of having her for several hours in my house. The parting was on good terms. Have had teams and the upside is there here and gone in no time, but when teams change b/c somebody gets fired, sick, etc., I always notice things out of place or cleaned unlike I specified. New people in teams = retraining and I really don't like having to be on constant watch to ensure consistency. But overall, I think a team is best, as mine has insurance if something is broken or damaged. Nobody does my laundry, makes my bed or cleans fridge or oven. I hired them to dust all, vacuum, polish furniture, clean windows, fans, cabinets and doors every 15 da. Will give them a little extra if I have visitors, in which case they do make that bed, and whatever extra is caused by the visit. Used Home Advisors to get my latest cleaning service. On an unrelated subject, I once recommended my cleaning service to a neighbor that turned out to be a sleaze ball and they didn't pay the lady for 3 months. I was mortified that I hooked her up with the slimeballs, so I doubt I will recommend anybody to avoid this kinda stuff....See MoreOT - Too many cleaning products - How many do you have?
Comments (28)I won't even begin to list how many cleaning products are in my house. It's. Absolutely. Terrifying. That being said, I'm working on getting rid of much of it and using more natural/earth friendly methods. One thing that I am having a tough time giving up is my toilet bowl cleaner with bleach. I just haven't found anything that makes me feel like the toilet is as clean as when I use some bleach based product. Just mixed up a batch of baking soda, essential oils (eucalyptus and peppermint), a little bit of Dawn dishwashing liquid, and enough water to make a paste. This was used to scrub the tub which gets absolutely horrible because it's an old porcelain tub (but the finish was messed up from the previous owners)...it got it as clean as the harsher cleansers I've used with about the same amount of effort. Bonus is that it smelled lovely, way better than most cleaning products you can buy in the store. Looking forward to hearing more about some of the alternate cleaning products that people use....See MoreHow do you clean windows with built in grills?
Comments (5)Great advice above. If you value looks over the convenience of easy cleaning, SDL's are a great choice. For similar curb appeal but less drama up close and easier cleaning, choose grids between the glass... Removable grids are a good concept to try and meet somewhere in between, however they are just impossible to execute well where they don't fall apart easily....See Morehappyintexas
