I have questions..what is her diet like, feeding schedule especially? Also have you tried benedryl instead of prednisone???
You also might want to buy some kitty grass and let your dog eat that instead of the grass she is eating in your yard....just a thought

Mazer she eats three meals a day.Smaller portions and her food is elevated.I started smaller meals 3x day a few years ago because of the acid reflux and the other basset sally vomits yellow bile,both have stomach problems.If it was grass she was eating I don't think I would be having these problems but it is certain weeds.I don't like giving her predisone and she only takes it every other day(10mg)for less than a week when she has allery outbreaks.She doesn't take it on a regular basis.Benadryl doesn't help her very much.I'm more concerned about the mouth problem right now and how to keep her from eating harmful weeds.

What brand of food do you feed?

There is much discussion on this forum about types of dog food and allergy. Some dogs can't tolerate certain grains in their diet, corn in particular.

Have you tried switching dog foods. Check the main ingredients on the food that you feed now, and it will probably be chicken and corn. Try switching your dog to a diet of "lamb and rice" or "potato and venison". (Those are the common combinations for the allergy diets.)

He may be eating the weeds, because he is not digesting his food properly and he is looking for something that he is not able to digest in a corn based diet.

A muzzle isn't a bad idea.

I cook their food,its chicken/rice with vegetables added.I occasionally switch out vegetables.No corn,no pasta.Shes 6 years old and has ate different foods over these years so yes I've switched and I am considering changing again but my choices are purina for sensitive stomach/skin or Hills ID from the vets office.Thats all that is offered for sensitive stomachs here.So which would be the best?

Rice is a grain. While grains do not bother many dogs, they are not tolerated by others, and many health issues can arise. I would first try switching their food to a grain free diet and see how they do. There are more than a few grain free commercial foods available.

Personally, I believe a raw diet is the best, but understand the challenge that can present. Finding a supplier is the biggest roadblock, IMO. Next is that it is downright scary to feed your dog(s) a diet that flies in the face of what is currently considered the "right" thing to feed. Most vets are against a raw diet. Then there is the issue of storage, (I bought a small upright freezer), and the extra steps of preparation. (although if you are already cooking for your dogs, the portion of the raw diet that requires prep is minimal.) My experience over the past 10+ years has been nothing but positive. The two dogs I had at the time I switched both benefited greatly, and I've never gone back.

My suggestions are these - pull your dog off cooked food and put her on a raw food diet. Natural Balance has prepackaged ones. Also contact an accupuncturist who works on dogs, seriously they can do wonders. Good luck

I agree re the raw diet. You will hear the same bad stories from vets "I just read about dog x who got this or that" but I've found they're the same stories. What is perplexing is there are many vets in Australia, in fact most of the ones I've spoken to are all in favour of the raw diet.

How it was explained to me was most veterinary studies are funded by the pet food industry, and they may receive financial assistance through other channels from them as well.

Hard to believe it's as simple as that, but that's what I've been told. One other big factor, many north american vets know nothing about raw diets, however dogs managed rather well on them in the wild without us!

I also agree regarding the rice. Dogs do not require carbs in their diet. They need, following the raw diet, raw meaty bones and supplements like some raw veges, or a commercial raw food like I buy which includes meat, bone dust/powder, and organ meat. There is also a version that includes veges but we do these ourselves in the food processor, to simulate the stomach contents of an animal they might eat.

My dog had a lot of gastric issues, hacking and vomiting pretty much everything she ate, after she was spayed.

At the end of our rope we put her on a raw diet of the prepared stuff. It's soft which seems to help, she keeps it down and thrives on it.

Thanks,as I mentioned in the first post she has ate the raw diet,both of them.They loved it,she ate it a year/half and then got sick with stomach problems.The vet did suggest I might want to quit feeding her raw so I did.I just started cooking the food that she ate raw and feed her that,she lasted another year or so before a serious bout of stomach problems.They say she has a sensitive stomach.No ulcers,etc.Overall she is suppose to be fine according to the blood work but yet I stll have a somewhat sick dog.In these six years she has ate various dry dog food,can dog food from cheap to better grades,raw food,cooked food.She still has skin allergies(mostly seasonal)and stomach issues.Thanks for all the advice.

My previous dog had IBD, or either Gerd, and did much better when I took her off rice. I would do as the others suggested and change the diet. Like your dog, my little one would eat any type of grass but I learned to recognize it as a sign that she was having a flare-up. When her GERD was under control she didn't bother the grass.

None of the OTC meds worked for my dog. The only relief she got was from Carafate. You may want to ask your vet about it since it has few, if any, side effects (mostly constipation). Have you read the side effects of metoclopramide? It's possible the med could be the cause of some of her problems.

I would also have the vet check your dog's teeth. Pawing at the mouth is often a tooth problem.

If I were in your position, I'd seek out another vet, at least for a second opinion. If my vet had told me not to bring in my dog because of her anxious/nervous issues, I'd seriously consider never using her again.

okay - I know you are probably frustrated but I like trying to figure things out...has your dog been tested for intesinal parasites? seems logical that if your dog is doing good for awhile and then things turn it is not the food but the dog...and would you consider acupunsture - the reason I suggest it is because a friends dog had similar symptoms and she finally got fed up with western medicine and went to an acupunturist, her dog got better within weeks and stayed okay for years...good luck.

Mazer,yes she has been tested and treated.She had 1 parasite,that was one parasite not one kind.She was treated as was the other dog.Thats like when they checked her ears and only found 1 mite.Anyway I live in a rural area of Ga.We only have 7 vets between several towns and I've already used 6 of them in the last 6 years.Acupunture is not avaliable.I most definetly believe its mostly the dog and not the food but I am considering changing.Taste of the wild is avaliable here and I'm thinking of trying it because its grain free.Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure a high protein diet is a good idea right now with her stomach issues. Did you know that often times what seems like acid reflux is actually the opposite your body isn't producing enough stomach acid, specially as we age. I think it could be the same case with dogs as well.

Have you looked into probiotics, fish oils, and digestive enzymes to help with the stomach issues?

Missing Link Wellness Blend and Prozyme are great natural products known to do wonders for dogs with skin, allergy, and digestive issues. Do not mix a digestive enzyme with medication-check with your vet, usually you just have to give the medication and enzymes at different times. If your going to try them, I would do it one at a time so you know what's helping and what isn't.

As for food, I would do a simple allergy food with few ingredients like California Natural Fish and Sweet Potato-I would not do lamb as it is becoming a common food allergen along with chicken and beef. Wet may be easier than dry for her to digest right now, or you might try a mix of both.

The weed eating has to stop-she's not giving her stomach a rest and time to heal. I think you should start taking her out on a leash and keep her head up so she can't graze. I know it's inconvenient but it's the only way to completely prevent it from happening.

If even having her on a leash won't stop the weed eating, she may have to learn to use a litter box indoors and walk her on roads, sidewalks, etc.
