Sorry, I can't say I'm too partial to either of your choices. I think the Moravian Star is too similar to what you already have and the schoolhouse light doesn't seem to have enough "presence" for that entryway (which is very pretty, by the way.) I don't have another suggestion for you at this time, but I think if you go to some lighting websites you could get some other ideas. I love light fixtures and think they can really add something special to a room. Good luck, I know how nerve wracking this kind of thing can be.

I agree with sjt2900. I would keep looking. I think you could find something more ornate than the 'schoolhouse' look...yet still clean & simple and more appropriate for an entry. I don't get your overall vibe in your home, so I really have no suggestions.

As for the moravian star, I collect them and have in my house as decor in windows, but I would not do a light fixture with it. To me, turning these into common light fixtures is what's trendy right now and (I agree) will look very Pier One after a few years. That's just my opinion.

Ditto. I would keep looking. That large open foyer is begging for something spectacular.

I still suggest a lantern of sorts. A schoolhouse light is too utilitarian for the space, and more suited to kitchens.

You need something to compliment that gorgeous front door and curved stairway. How about something like the ones igloochic has hanging in her library area? You know the ones I mean? They have the glass kind of like the schoolhouse lights but with extra detailing.

Also, did I miss your update on kitchens WRT your kitchen lights?

I so understand how you feel about your current light, we had one in our last house for 11 years. I hated it all 11 of those years, and finally replaced it with a chandelier I loved.

That's such a large beautiful open space, it needs something large -- tall and wide, but taller than it is wide, with lots of open space and interest. You will find something you love as you look around.

Hmmm, no one likes my choices. I know what I don't want -- I just can't articulate what I do want. What I don't want is ornate (sorry, brutuses, but that word makes me break out in hives); chandeliers dripping in crystals; bowls that catch dust; anything too contemporary; anything in wrought iron, bronze, oil rubbed bronze, or otherwise dingy (no offense, just not my style); or a basic imitation-candles-in-glass-lantern/birdcage style. Unfortunately I think I've ruled out just about everything in the known lighting universe! Back to the drawing board. Thanks.

I would stay away from one with glass because it looks like it would be impossible to clean it. I agree that you need something larger than what is there now.

annes_arbor -- I searched on lighting universe for those. Model names are Solaris, Sentinel, and Somerton (I think).

Bluekitobsessed -- just keep looking -- something will grab you. And it'll give you some descriptive terms to help you search for others that you may like even more.

Since you don't like the styles suggested,how about the moravian star in clear glass? I think the only thing I didn't like is the color of the glass in the link you posted. It should be a fairly large one for your space. If thats what you like then try it. I don't know how trendy they are- but it didnt look like it would cost so much that in a few years it couldnt be replaced(and sold on CL) I wouldn't go for the schoolhouse light there- it would look to me like you bought one too many for your kitchen and couldnt return it to the store. LOL I am enjoying how you are blending your Mom's beautiful things with yours. I know it must be a bit difficult.

Have you seen the scavo glass fixtures from CX Design? They are transitional, can be ordered with a satin nickel finish, and come in a number of gorgeous colors which really can't be appreciated on the website. I first saw them in a very contemporary lighting store, but I think they work in a variety of settings. Look at the Nido...it reminds me of a souped up version of a schoolhouse light!

One of the issues is that you live in a neo-Colonial revival/transitional house and that kind of dictates "appropriateness" based upon some of the architectural features.

Palimpset, can you tell me more about the astrolabe globe (the second one -- "too elaborate")? It's intriguing.

I forgot to mention that I have a hard time with Mission -- I like the lines (straight, simple) but not the colors (dingy, brown, blah).

PS My house is a 1980s tract with a pseudo-Tudor exterior (a couple of fake half timbers thrown up on stucco) -- but I like the sound of "neo-Colonial revival/transition" much better :)

Blue, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the look that you're going for.

You've got the school house lights in the kitchen and then the LR with sheers and a formal valance. The lighting that you choose is going to have to bridge those two.

Your choices are very different from each other, obviously. I can't really see an ultra modern fixture next to either the LR or kitchen.

I just took a look at RH to see what they had. The one on the link comes in a lighter pewter? (forget what they called the finish), too.

It's hard to guess when you can't even guess. I just don't like the school light or the star there. You need something larger, and something that makes a statement for your home. So yes, even though they're hard to get to for cleaning and bulb changing, most entry lights are on the ornate side. I think you also need a fixture that holds several bulbs so the staircase is well lit for safety. Good luck and keep us posted, please!
