home remedies & tips- please share

My friend came over & was telling me that her dogÂs nail was split & since they were way over grown she cut the nail very short. Soon after that the dog lost the nail, it got infected & now is on antibiotics from the vet. This got me thinking, (scary, I know) if we share some home remedies or things you might not think of that have worked for your pets, maybe it can help someone else. I told her that one of my dogs a long time ago had split her nail, someone told me to use new skin sold for people. It worked almost like super glue, 1 application was all that was needed & it never split again. I realize this may not work for everyone or every situation, but would be something to think about if the need arose. Does anyone else have any tips for our animals that have worked well for them? Please share.

Canned pumpkin is helpful for simple diarrhea;
not the sweetened pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin.
The ingredient list should read: "pumpkin".

& mange mites need air to survive;
you can smother it with any heavy greasy substance, like petroleum jelly;
people used to apply used motor oil because animals weren't inclined to lick it off.

If you yourself get ringworm, apply athlete's foot medicine, forget what it's called, seems like it starts with a 'z'.

Use the spray kind so you don't have to touch the ringworm.

Liquid Baby Benadryl works for bee stings and other allergic reactions.

"Little Tummies" baby anti-gas meds (over-the-counter), works on doggies too, and comes with a dropper.

Baby wipes (cheap from Target) are great for paws and butts. I keep some in the car too.

Hello... I am long overdue to start creating a garden workspace and organizing all my garden junk. I thought I would resurrect this old post and see if anyone had any more to add to it. I could start a new thread if that is a better idea? So....I have too much junk scattered all over the place..the basement, the garage, seeds in my bedroom...lol. I am sure you get the picture and perhaps there is someone else out there who has the same problem. I just don't know where to start, it is a little overwhelming. What gives me the most trouble? Large containers 22" and where to put them for the winter. Large bags of potting soil or soil amendments....storing and having easy access to them. POTS! Having tools handy when out in the garden without making 10 trips to the garage for something I forgot, yet not dragging everything around with me. Leftover materials from past projects...a pile of broken pavers, a small pile each of stonedust and pea gravel. The COMPOST BINS! I need to get them out of sight. We have a small yard. I was hoping to create an area where I had everything garden related so it is not in a number of different places. My problem is the only area available is on the side of my garage but the main entrance to the backyard from the front is there and you would have to pass through my 'workarea' to get to it. I really love a pretty organized, neat area anyway....I am just not coming up with creative ideas for what I have to work with to make it that way. If someone has had similar issues that they have resolved successfully, I would love to hear about how you did it. Ok this will kill the health food freaks, but oh well :oP You're warned... Hangover MacDonalds chocolate milkshake will cure it faster than anything. I used to work for a DR and he was a nut about health, but on occasion, I'd see him drive up in the AM with a MicD's drink glass. He didn't drink soda...I was thinking he was getting huge orange juices. One day while cleaning the office a bit (his desk was frightening LOL) I saw that the soda cup was actually milkshake. His medical explaination... Milk will aggrevate the acids in your system from the booze, likely curdling and coming back up. MacDonalds fake shakes actually aren't made from milk so much as chemicals, so they'll go down and sort of "Sit" on the acids and absorb them as well. The chocolate gives you the sugar boost you need until your body can bring itself back to normal (it's just temporary) and the cafeen will help with a perk up. I use it myself ever since :) I don't drink til I pass out daily LOL but on occasion, when entertaining wine collectors especially, I'll end with one taste too many (port always gets me LOL I can't say no). I also used to drink for a living (ok I was community relations, but in AK that means you spend quite a bit of time at a private club here that specializes in wine) and every once in a while, it would be hard to get up in the morning heh heh My staff knew if they saw me with a milkshake before 10, they should leave me be for an hour LOL

Hi, RDW. This is fun time, but most of it'll be right at home. You'll notice that Marcolo's link has almost nothing to do with yet another shopping trip. A few inserts are prizes, but a lot are unnecessary obstacles to good use. Some flexibility isn't just good, it's required for good function. That link does cover almost everything, so I'll just offer to think in terms of point of first use and, since not everything can be stored right there, in terms of priority--the more often an item is used, the closer it gets stored to point of first use. Long ago I visited someone with a very small kitchen who stored her salad spinner on a shelf by a stack of 4 plates and 4 bowls. I was clueless then, but now I understand completely. Smart lady.

Wendy, lucky me in California we have access to very good quality C&S soil, with zero peat! It's ~40% pumice with Fir and Redwood "aged" bark and wood product and a little bit of sand. Since seedlings like it moist I use this as is for most applications. I add more small size pumice for plants that prefer less compost. For very tiny seeds I sprinkle a layer of sifted soil through a fine kitchen strainer so they don't fall through. Finally I sprinkle some small size pumice once the seedlings reach a reasonable size (a least equal to the size of the pumice I use). This has worked for me in my generally very dry environment. I have to be more careful over the winter or like now when the weather is more humid, most of all this season!!! Thanks to that vortex thingy, it's been wet and cool all winter here. Happy snails and slugs, C&S not so much, but won't complain, we need it :)

If your dog eats something that it shouldn't, like a screw or pill or piece of plastic, you can induce vomiting with a tablespoon (or two depending upon the size of the dog) of hydrogen peroxide. I would only do this if its fairly close to the time frame of when they ate it - not hours later. I would make sure you do it outside as the dog will make a mess indoors.

I learned this years ago, when my dog ate the gel from the inside of a foot warmer. The ingredients didn't seem toxic, but my vet recommended we induce vomiting, just in case. And since then, I've used it a couple other times. Once when that same dog ate a couple screws while I was putting together a book shelf. Another time when my JRT chewed into my gym bag to eat my smelly clothes and she chewed up a pill bottle that was in the bag. The pill count seemed okay, from the date it was filled to the date she ate it, but I wasn't positive so we induced vomiting. She didn't vomit any pills, but she did puke up a few buttons and zipper head. (crazy dog!)

Diatomaceous Earth for all different kinds of parasites, make sure it's food grade, link supplied below explains what it is and how to use it. ( this is just one of many brands to choose)
