Comments (5)So, would you feed again with plant tone, or foliar feed with fish emulsion? If those were my only 2 choices I'd use the Plant Tone. I don't recall the ratings on it but at least it is well-balanced unlike the fish emulsion. Then again dry organic fertilizers only work when there is sufficient soil bacteria to convert them to usable nutrients. So they are slow-acting. Your best bet if you want only organics is one of the many well-balanced liquid organic fertilizers that also include micro-nutrients. Dave...See MoreHelp: Want to grow cactus from seed
Comments (1)I have not grown Turbinicarpus, but I have tried a few other Mexican species, and I think you will find the Rebutia a bit easier. It is fully possible to kill them, but I have always ended up with surplus plants when I have sown Rebutia (at least those from the subgenus Rebutia, Mediolobivia can be somewhat trickier). I don't know how you grew your Turbinicarpus seedlings or why they died, so it is difficult to give any specific advice. Rebutia seeds should in general be treated in the same way as Turbinicarpus....See MoreWhat's YOUR method of growing hellebores from seed?
Comments (59)I am bumping this thread. I have hellebores in two areas of the garden; one with mature plants and the second in an area where I've been scattering seeds occasionally. This year, I found hundreds of babies around my mature plants. I transplanted around 300 of the babies over to the other area and now have collected seed to scatter in the same area. The new area has partial sun. We are in New England. My questions are: 1) Should I scatter the seeds, scatter and rake in lightly, or scatter and then cover with a light layer of something? I would prefer not to pot them and then have to plant them later. (Too much chance of me forgetting about them!) 2) When I see a baby ( around an inch and a half tall, with a 4" root), did that sprout from last year's seed or this year's? And as a followup, is the young plant (around 7-9 inches, with larger leaves), a 2 year old? Thanks, I do love these plants!...See MorePlease share your tips on getting rid of Slugs and Snails
Comments (23)Hi Cora! Yes, a 10% ammonia solution in a spray bottle is by far the easiest to kill slugs on sight without damaging your plants or soil. (You should not use a salt shaker.) Just take any old spray bottle and put in 9 parts water, 1 part household ammonia (non-sudsing kind, if you have it). You may read about stronger solutions (more ammonia), but it is not necessary. Since you will be spraying the slugs as you see them, you will also see that a 10% solution works. Have fun! Carol...See Morestupidlazydog CT zone 5b/6a
