non-toxic tick control?

On the Texas Forum, someone posted that, with a decline in tick-eating fireants (yuck), she's got ticks for the first time in years.

She has Preventic collars on the dogs & finds them effective, but how can she get rid of the ticks in the soil without killing the garden critters such as butterflies & lizards?

I haven't seen ticks here yet this year, but since I've reduced the fireant population, I'd sure like to have some plan beforehand.

This is what I use (and you can google "beneficial nematodes" and read up on it.)

I buy these online or (if you are in a more populated area) get them at your local nursery. Follow the instructions for broadcasting these over your yard. They will rid your yard of fleas and ticks and other types of pests. They have also reduced my fire ant mounds. I put them out over two years ago and am just now beginning to see fleas on my dogs. As a matter of fact, I just received my order and will be putting them out early tomorrow morning. They are not toxic to humans or animals and have made my dogs much more comfortable. I understand that they are also good for garden pests on your plants. Between this treatment and treating my animal watering troughs with a small amount of chlorine for mosquito control, my dogs are very happy campers.

I am not aware of any way to kill ticks and not other insects, except by targeting them directly with some sort of insecticide spray or whatever. All insecticides target things that all insects have (chitin, nervous system, etc) so there isn't a way to selectively kill ticks.

I can't think of a good reason to kill ticks on the ground that aren't bothering anyone. If the pets are protected and you do thorough tick-checks for yourself, then you don't have anything to worry about. Ticks are food for birds too, so killing them would have a bad effect on the bird population too.

Nancy, the Bordeaux mix should only be used while the tree is still dormant - before bud break. It can be phytotoxic, which is why it's recommended to be used before the tree is in leaf. And you never want to spray during the flowering period when pollinators are present. Other than the Bordeaux mix, this is going to be a difficult problem to control just restricting yourself to organics......sad, but true:-( Cultural controls and good garden sanitation are critical and MUST be used together with any fungicides, organic or not - sprays alone will not do the trick. Part of the diffculty is that the fungal spores germinate and spread when the weather is warm, generally some time after bud break and one can't determine the degree of infection until the following year when the galls begin forming, so some sort of spray program is advised. Pruning out problem areas is most often advised but won't help a wit if the infection has progressed to major limbs or the trunk. You just need to remove the tree at that point. If I were in this situation, I might try using Neem oil for spraying any time after the trees emerge from dormancy and when the temperatures are close to 55F or above. If possible, spray when no threat of rain is present for at least 24 hours and don't spray when pollinators are present - Neem can harm them as well as any chemical. I'd repeat applications every 10 days to two weeks through shuck split (when the tepals fall off to expose any emerging fruit). Otherwise, there are very few fungicides that are registered for control of black knot (and most you wouldn't want to or can't use anyway) but if you use something registered for brown rot and follow a similar spray schedule, you should be OK.

The single best source of information about Fire Ants is Texas A & M, every other web site I've seen about them simply copies the materials from TAMU. Chiggers can be a whole other problem. Sulfur is one of the products listed as a deterent, something to keep the wee buggers off you, not as something that can be spread around the yard to control them. Non of the material available to the average homeowner for chiger control is terribly safe, although for some reason some of the products available to licensed pesticide applicators are pyrethrin based. Hi, I am up in MA north of Boston. We own a company that does a lot of tickspraying. We were getting so many calls outside our area looking for help or information. A lot of people were looking for a way to determine if what they had was in fact a tick. So out of my own pocket I started www.Tickspraying.com a website with tick identification, info about Lyme disease and some other tick borne diseases. There is a page on how to remove a tick and some answers to FAQ's, and a blog as well. Currently I treat my lab with frontline spring thru fall. I have heard all the neg about putting a chemical on him, however I look at how nasty Lyme disease is. In regard to sprays there is a natural pyrethrum made from chrysanthemums called HydroPy-300 its not 100% organic due to the synergist in it. Garlic based products are advertised as a repellant, but if a tick is in the middle of wherever it doesnt know which way to walk, plus they dont travel like ants do. Repelants also wont control any that fall off of mice, chipmunks etc. DE wont work if the ticks are up on brush either. My take is to kill them, I am all for organic this or that, but up here a tick bite can ruin your life. HydroPy-300 is probably the best product to use. The other product we had good sucess with with was ecoexempt IC2 it smelled like root beer. It is made with plant oils that effect the octopamine transmitters in the tick, didnt work good for mosquitoes, but worked on ticks. Here is a link that might be useful: organic tick spraying

when used as directed, any pesticide available off the shelf of any open to the public retailer is safe. the key here is the first phrase, WHEN USED AS DIRECTED. every one of my garden hoses has a label that states "this hose or it's components contains lead, a substance know to teh state fo California to cause cancer". i don't plan on eating the fittings, so the lead ain't gonna hurt me. i also do not drink from my pesticide dispensers, and i wash off fully immediately after applying pesticides. i have been directly sprayed before, and i can tell you it ain't no fun. when i worked for the USDA doing pesticide experiments, we were working a field hand counting bugs on the cotton. a crop duster sprayed the wrong field and soaked 7 of us. we all had to take off for a few days due to nausea and our eyes burning. this is why fields have signs up that NO ONE may enter for any reason. when i spray around my house, the same things goes, no people allowed in the area until it dries. and no, i am not baiting people with posts about pesticides. pesiticide use is very common in my area. most folks still use the sevin dust, i switched to liquid for both ease of application and less collateral damage to the environment.

Guinea hens are great natural tick controls. They'll keep a yard nice and bug free. They'll even eat tomato hornworms, and there's precious little that will do that.

I was going to suggest Guinea hens! Chickens and Ducks will also eat ticks, but I've always heard Guinea hens are the best.
