Dogs with severe allergies (long)

Stanley will be 8 years old in May. We have had him since he was a tiny puppy. He was completely fine until he was about 5 and then the itching started. We took him to the vet and were told that he was fine and that he was simply licking his paws because he thought he was a cat, or it was a bad habit. The licking continued and was almost constant and soon he had sores on his paws. Again we go to the vet and again we are told he is fine. He did, however have an infection in his ears. We were given some sort of drops that did absolutely nothing to help with that. We bought an E collar in hopes that his paws would have a chance to heal and then he wouldn't feel the need to lick them anymore. Also hoping that not being able to get to his paws would break this "habit" of his. He wore the collar 95% of the time for nearly a year. :( Obviously it didn't help at all. In the mean time I had read on the internet that dogs can have allergies to food. I tried everything from Aldi brand food to the most expensive food that I could find at the pet store and still no improvement. We have tried special shampoos, sprays, and putting socks on his feet. I had him on Benadryl for months and that didn't help him at all. Not to mention that 10 pills a day (per the vets orders) really tend to get pricey.

Soon Stanley started to smell HORRIBLY like yeast. Our entire apartment smelled like a HUGE bowl of pizza crust.

We took him to a different vet and we were told that he has a yeast infection. This new vet gave us antibiotics, ear drops (that worked wonders on his ears so at least we made some progress)and some sort of steroids to help with the itching. He said that if Stanley got better that we would know it was just a seasonal allergy and that if he didn't we would know that he was allergic to something in the store foods. He said to come back in 4 weeks. Stanley didn't improve so back we go again. He put Stanley on a prescription dog food called Royal Canine Whitefish and Potato. ($55 for a 16 pound bag) The vet assured me that at the end of 8 weeks on this special food that Stanley would be in great shape. Then Stanley would just continue on with the special food for the rest of his life. Well, Friday makes 8 weeks. There is a slight improvement, in that the entire apartment no long smells like yeast, just the room that Stanley is in at the time. He licks and bites his paws every chance that he gets. I have been told that he now has a staff infection on his paw as there is a huge boil type area on top of his one paw. In the last 8 weeks we have gone back to the vet 3 more times and we were given more antibiotics and more ear drops. During one visit Stanley got a cortisone shot for his itching which did a whole lot of NOTHING. The vet recommended that I bathe him in Selson Blue, did that and again no change.

Now the vet wants a thyroid test AND an allergy test. The allergy test alone is another $200. Not to mention that each time we have been to the vet it is another bill of $130.

DH and I are both just frustrated. I have tried many home remedies that I have read about on the internet including vinegar baths and peroxide/alcohol mixtures. I feel completely horrible for my poor dog. Currently Stanley's skin has many sores on it and it is flaking terribly. His gums itch, his paws itch, his entire body itches him. :(

Has anyone had any experiences with this at all? If so, what have you found that worked?

I am sorry this is so long.
