Starting with bedroom makeover PICS

I will get to posting the pics of our remodeled bath and kitchen but I thought I'd start with the bedroom pics. This is one of the rooms that doesn't go with the feel of the rest of the house...but it's separated so it's okay for now.

A few small changes made a huge difference. When we moved in we had such old furniture (from when I was in high school!) and just dealt with it until I just couldn't take it anymore. I did this makeover with my SIL's help in a weekend on a short budget. We need a new rug but not while we have two little ones and a dog! Here are some before and afters :) Thanks for looking!

Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?

Kimberly & Oneplustwo, I'd say that the wall color leans slightly to the blue side when you put bolder colors w/ it like the red, white & blue color scheme going on now. When the rm. was empty & it was just the white shades, white trim, cream area rug & some white furniture it seemed more sophisticated & leaned less toward blue more towards gray. This rm. was our MBR originally & after the reno was done (as far as it's gotten) & painted, I nearly moved back into the rm. I'd just go in there by myself & sit & be quiet. The color is an old Lowes color that I think is by the Valspar manufacturer. It's called Silverware. They still have it in their computer & in the old fandeck that they have behind the counter. A close BM color is Blue Lace. Teacats, I found some wonderful posters that I have my eye on! Thank you! Les, Love the idea of maps on the ceiling. In fact I have quite a few framed antique & reproduction maps including a huge wall sized one dug out of an old one rm. schoolhouse that my FIL was working on. I've been looking for a hanging place for them & I think that after your suggestion I've found the spot in the upstairs hallway. The old soft colors will really tie the upstairs rms. together. DH stopped at the shop & made the slats for the beds yesterday on his way home (that was the fastest he ever get furniture fixed for me!) & here are the headboards. Now I just have to get a mattress set this wk. & get the beds put together: I love those beds so much that I asked DH to work w/ my dad between workshops to make a king sized version for me in black. It was midnight when I asked so I'll see if he even remembers. You can hardly see it in any of the pics but there is also an old horse drawn wagon seat bench that DH re-finished that is the perfect size for little kids to sit on. Somebody didn't want it anymore & just dropped it off at the shop. My kids love it! Now that my camera battery is recharged I will have to take a pic of that & the toy bench that my dad made once DS2 gets up. DS1 who normally talks me ever-lovin' ears off was speechless when he saw it! He said that he loved it & I got a big bear hug & lots of "I love you's'. He even played w/ his little brother fight free for a few hours in it before we had to leave for a car club banquet.

"Sometimes I feel like I am the only person not living in a million dollar home." I think you're in good company here... can't think of any new furniture I have. My fridge was new - 14 yrs ago. I did buy 4 utility cabinets new - 14 yrs ago. The type you get at Kmart and put together yourself - white laminate. Still got those and will use them here for storage. both of my tvs are old tube types. One given to me and one I pd 10.00 for. If I ever replace one of them I will get a new one (on a great sale I hope) but it won't be one of those huge ones. The only reason I care to have one of the new flat screen tvs is so I can move it around and clean behind it! Even when I buy something new I don't want to pay regular full price for it.

I think the addition of the stripe might not be approved by DS. I think it might take it that one step beyond looking pulled together and looking "decorated". But I will let him choose when he returns next week. He hasn't seen the room finished. Even though he chose the individual elements and has seen the room painted, he hasn't seen everything in the room. I offered photos but he wants to be surprised. That's why I haven't ironed the duvet yet, just in case he hates it in person. I went to the fabric store today to pick up some options. I found a gray linen that is very close to the background color of the drapes and would work the best if I added stripes. I also picked up a heavy matelasse type of fabric per a couple suggestions above. This one is the wall color and has a little circle theme. Yeah I know....i'm supposed to be moving away from that but I think it could be a contender as it's rather subtle. I picked up one other that I'm not sure how to explain but I don't really like. I also purchased a 1/2 yard of charcoal silk to use to make cording for the pillows and decided to see how that would work so I'm attaching photos for your thoughts. charcoal silk...I like the contrast with everything else and since I am using it to edge the throw pillows made out of the circle fabric, it would tie in. Unfortunately, they are rather stingy with their samples and have a minimum 1/2 yard purchase requirement... I couldn't find anything heavy except the circle fabric. The linen is rather "stiff" though and would hold a box pleat really well.

It's gorgeous. I'm so envious. I'd love to make a blue/white bedroom work for me, but I get almost no natural light. Every color of blue I put on the wall makes it look like a cave, no matter how light it looks on the chip.

I'd like to second (or third) the request for the paint color? Maybe I can try it at 50%. :)

I am working on finding the paint color (did this makeover over a year ago). I always save the paint chips but for some reason I don't know where I have this one. It was from Lowes - Valspar paint. That's all I can tell you at the moment but I will find it.
The comforter I found on clearance at Kohls. It was the only one there and the pictures don't do it justice...it is gorgeous.
The furniture is from Bob's Discount Furniture. It isn't the best quality but for the price it works for us just fine.
The front of my house faces West - we get tons of sunlight and have huge windows so it is nice and bright from early afternoon until sunset :)
I have since replaced the picture of the bed with a very large beach scene oil painting.

I love what you did with this space. The transformation is amazing. I especially like how well the comforter and wall colors match. It really helps the room flow - the white furniture also.
