problem with neighborhood cat beating my cat up

I have 3 indoor only Ragdolls. My cats have always been indoor cats, so I know that's the only way to keep a cat safe. I've been feeding/sheltering a homeless cat (Blackie) for over a year and half, and I've gotten very attached to him. He was intact and kept getting into fights with a gray cat. After being severely beaten up, I took Blackie to vet, spent about $600 on antibiotics, care, vaccinations and blood tests. He tested positive for FIV, and vet said it would not be safe to bring him in with my healthy cats. He is also not adoptable because of FIV. But he has been nursed to health, is very happy, has heating pad, food and everything he could ask for, incl. my heart. So I had him neutered and he's been living my garage. He stays in my stucco walled yard and in garage at night. The same cat who has nearly killed him still comes and beats him up, sprays all over my porch. I just want Blackie to be safe. I'm putting cat door in garage for him. He's made a beautiful loving pet. Any ideas on how to get the other cat to just go away? I think he may not have an owner but he's mean.

Can you just trap him with a humane trap and take him to a shelter? He'll be put down, but it sounds like Blackie will likely end up dead if you don't and the gray cat's life will probably end violently and prematurely anyway. Some shelters will lend or rent you a trap.

FIV+ cats can live long and happy lives (keeping stress down is helpful), and they can be adoptable. Generally it is recommended that they go to homes with no other cats, or with other FIV+ cats. I have heard of them living with non-FIV cats though (mellow cats, that aren't likely to fight, draw blood--since it is transmitted via blood/bites I believe).

If you can find a rescue group, or a no-kill shelter that would take him in, if you can't find someone to adopt him on your own, that would be ideal. Maybe Best Friends (Utah based sanctuary) could point you in the right direction if you are unable to find a place locally.

While you have LOTS of suggestions here, there is one that I haven't seen yet. Cats tend to find the smell of pine (evergreens in general) unpleasant. Not all cats are offended by it, which is why many climb christmas trees and others use pine based litters, but it is something to try. I'm assuming that if the same plant gets knocked over again and again this pot must be on a preferred path to someplace. Have you tried making the destination windowsill, squishy place to sleep, interesting smells, snacks) unattractive? What about moving the pot? As for climbing, cats prefer high places. They do not limit themselves to a horizontal plane like humans and dogs tend to do. The higher the better in most cats' opinions. You might try adding appropriate vantage points in your home so your cat doesn't see the ficus as the best view. Even a couple empty or sparsly decorated shelves might work, as long as kitty has clear access and space to make himself comfortable. You might try planting a patch of catnip for your cat to enjoy as an alternative to playing in your other plants. In my experience, cats can obsess over a pot of catnip, so you might only put it within access at night or when you're out of the house (whenever plant terrorism is most prevalent). Else, be prepared for continual feline attention on the catnip and have more pots growing in reserve. (Your cat may not develop the addictive tendencies mine showed, but it's a risk!) I assume since you said kitty does not dig in either pot, just knocks it over or climbs, that he is not using your plants as a litterbox? If he is pottying there, keep the appropriate litterbox absolutely spotless for a few weeks. Maybe even add another box or two as an enticement. Cats like to keep clean, and the litterbox is no exception. If it's too dirty for their taste they will go elsewhere. It may be that some cats prefer plant pots because we clean up after them as soon as we know it's there! Try placing attractive smells elsewhere. I've had luck in the past with pineapple juice. Just make sure it's something your cat finds wonderful, and that it's placed on something you do not mind your cat rubbing against or clawing. I strongly suggest you do not use the scent of other cats (or any animal), as it may encourage your cat to mark territory by spraying, urinating or defecating. Like someone mentioned earlier, wear your cat out! Lots of playtime, lots of human snuggle time... whatever your cat will agree to engage in. Thank you all for your suggestions. I will wait a while to introduce them anyway, but to get a head start on info is good. And the condition that goes with adopting a kitten is that it be neutered before leaving my home or within 2 weeks and I want proof, I work for an animal rescue group that is doing this for free but I will ask each new kitten owner to make a minimal donation to help cover those costs for the rescue. This will also ensure that the people really want the kittens as pets, not to abuse. I see too many "free kittens" that are used for horrible purposes, so if the new owners are willing to make a donation I know they probably have good intentions. I actually took Amy to get spayed a week before her delivery, it was breaking my heart to do it knowing she was pregnant. After I dropped her off in her carrier, I sat in the parking lot and pondered my decision. Then two cars pull up to the MASH unit (a mobile surgical hospital that does spay/neutering as well as all necessary shots for those with low income) and out of the first one comes a pug that looked just like the dog my sister just had put to sleep a few months ago. The second car out jumps a white collie mix that looks like the dog my dad hit on their farm when she ran in front of his truck. I burst into tears, knowing Jade and Francie (the dogs) were telling me something. I ran out of the car, banged on the door and told them I didn't want to do it. They just tested her for FIV and other diseases, if she was infected I would have just put her down but she came up free and clear and healthy. I can't believe I almost did that now that the kittens are here. I am a FIRM believer in spaying, I have three full-blooded Ragdolls but had them all spayed because, as cute as they are too, the line has to be drawn, and I like this MASH unit because it benefits low income areas like mine to prevent any more "accidents". Thank you all. We have a screen door that might fit in the bedroom door frame, I will try that, but will wait. Laurief, the room is a spare, so it has a bed which she had her kittens under and room enough for them to explore and get their legs build strength, although the berber carpet is a challenge with those tiny claws! She can live there as long as she likes. My second question is this; once the kittens are weaned, is it not a good idea to let them out of the room since Amy will be not be with them? I want to raise them "underfoot" where they have the run of the house until they are ready to go to new homes. Last question: how old do the kittens need to be to get them neutered and how long for Amy? I have great knowledge of cats, but I know nothing of raising kittens!!!

Once the cats come into your garage call animal control and have them picked up and hauled off to the unwanted, unloved cat station where they will be fed, given health care and adopted out if possible. If these are clearly people's pets and you are a super nice person you could post notices warning people their outdoor cats are in violation of your local animal laws (if they are) by being loose and if it continues then they will be picked up and will have to pay a fine to reclaim them. (which is usually the case). I'm of the belief that pets are at risk in the wild urban environment and there is nothing to be ashamed of by calling and having them picked up if they are loose. Also they keep reproducing and becoming pests so it's really not a terrible thing.

A cattery. Do you have a door or a window that you can build a fenced enclosure for your cats outside of? You build a big cube with 2x4s and have a secure tunnel going from the window to a loft in the cattery. Cover the structure with chicken wire on all sides and the top. Put a roof over top of part of it and they can even go out and enjoy watching the rain. I would have some more chicken wire sewed to the bottom of the fence that folds inward and is buried underground to make sure that nothing can dig in or out. Stake it in place well, plant things the cats like inside it and have things to climb on and places for you to sit with them outside (if you put a door in it). No attacks from stray cats or coyotes, no birds killed by your cats, and they can run through the tunnel back inside when threatened. Make it into a pleasant garden. I also agree that seeing as your cat suffered injuries from one of the strays, you are justified in getting a trap for them. The animal control officer in your county may have traps to borrow. Catch, spay, neuter, release far away. Maybe the neighborhood could take up a collection for getting them neutered. I bet they bother others, too.

Not all cats are automatically euthanized at shelters.

Sheesh. Really. That is offensive to the people in shelters across the country who dedicate their lives to saving other lives.

I don't mean to sabotage this thread, so will address it in my own post.

What about trapping the other cat and having it neutered thru a spay/neuter clinic? It would cost much less vs going thru your vet.

Thank you all for such helpful suggestions. I really think Blackie could have a good life with me once this one problem is solved. First thing tomorrow I'm having a magnetic cat door installed on my garage. Blackie already wears a collar and he hasn't once fought it so hopefully the cat door will keep Meany out. I actually did think about capturing and neutering Meany but I'm not sure if he even has an owner and that makes me feel bad too. Hopefully I can work this out. Shame on owners who abandon these poor babes.

A little late but...

Sandy - I think you are right that it would be wrong to trap someone else's cat, even if that owner (should he have an owner) is doing wrong by not keeping his cat home.

Did you know they make netting and installation kits to put along the tops of fences? It will keep yours in and others out.

I spayed/neutered many cats that come to my house hungry and hanging around periodically. I go house to house for several streets with a flyer that has the cats description and photo, leaving it their newspaper box if no one is home. I also post an ad on Craigslist. then after 2 weeks I go ahead and humanely trap the cat. my local Humane Society will TNR (spay/neuter/vaccinate) for a small fee or donation. then I release the cat after they have recovered (24 hours for females). If they are friendly, the HS will find them a home w/the option of my taking them back. if mean, I release them. I've not had one cat that I TNRed ever have an owner. ALL were abandoned. the ones that live on my street and have owners I recognize, some are well fed and have collars. Neutering Mr Meany will most likely stop the roaming, spraying and fighting. BUT if you take Blackie exclusively indoors (which is awesome!) you will most likely "adopt" another cat that will hang around your house. such is the case w/me when I incorporate a cat into my family and keep them exclusively indoors. I currently have a "meany" tom that lives in my basement via a cat door. took 2-1/2 yrs & now he is the sweetest guy ever!

How is it wrong to have a cat who is allowed to roam neutered or spayed? People seem to have this notion that they can do whatever they want without regard to their neighbors. It is NOT OK to allow an intact cat to roam. If for no other reason than the fact that the rest of the taxpayers in the community are then saddled with the responsibility to dispose of the unwanted litters produced by the intact animals allowed to roam.

Trap the cat, have it neutered, then release. You'll be doing a public service. If the cat has owners who are concerned with whether it remains intact they wouldn't be allowing it to roam, period.
