How to keep cats out
Comments (15)Hot pepper spray would be harmful. They get it on their paws and when they groom themselves it can get in their eyes. If you've ever gotten pepper juice in your eyes when cooking, you know it's painful. It's known that cats don't like the smell of citrus which is why Corrine1 had success with orange peels. Perhaps you could find a cat deterrent spray at a pet supply store that's used to keep them off furniture. I have cats and I've noticed they won't use an area that I've mulched with shredded cypress(commonly sold around here). I'm thinking it's more the texture than the smell. Maybe try lava rock mulch since the shredded bark can affect the nitrogen content of the soil. They prefer sand and soft garden soil. It sounds like the cat sprayed your cukes rather than peed 'on' them. Mostly un-neutered cats will do territorial spraying, but neutered/spayed cat will occasionally spray also. There may be more than one neighbor's cat out there. We have a sand-based play are here on the grounds and a lot of neighborhood cats use it(including our own)on their way to the vacant lot next door where they all like to hunt. The tenents here would like to have another medium under the 'jungle jim' but HUD safety regulations will only allow a soft medium like sand or ground rubber(and the housing authority would never pay for ground rubber). On the up side, we don't have a rodent problem here. Sorry to go on so long. I like cats and my garden and try to find ways to have both. Hope you can find something that works for you and report back to us....See MoreCats! How to keep them out!
Comments (24)Well, personally I never garden without my gloves on. Too many soil born diseases that have nothing to do with cats. I think I'd have a "Monk" attack if I actually had to dig with my bare hands. Having said that I do have to keep my cat out of my freshly sown plantings and for that I use hardware cloth which I make into low Quanset hut type structures that I place over the seed rows(they look like this: ( only right side up). Cats won't walk on them and when the seedlings are high enough I remove the quanset hut structure. Cats won't purposely walk on the small plants as a rule. Don't make them too high though or that will intrigue a cat to see what's going on under the hump. As for mulch, once it settles down my cat mostly leaves it alone....See Moresuggestions for keeping stray cat out of yard
Comments (11)At our former residence, someone's cat would constantly hide under our azalea bushes and wait to pounce on the birds. It was a beautiful cat--very fluffy and a smoky color. You could not get close enough to it to attach a note to it's collar. I was always running outside to shoo it away. Then I noticed for about 3 weeks it didn't come around. I was relieved and thought maybe the owners had moved. Then everyone in the neighborhood got a note in their mailbox from the owners saying their cat, Misty, came down with excrutiating pain, was rushed to the vet's office and died during the night. The vet suspected it was poisoned possibly by anti-freeze. The owners, in the letter cautioned everyone to remove any spilled antifreeze because evidently it has a sweet taste that cats like. At the same time, they said if the cat was a bother to anyone all they would have had to do was notify them and they would have kept the cat inside. Oh, and their address was 2 or 3 streets from our neighborhood. My point is how can the owner be notified when nobody knows where the cat lives. I had seen the cat many times in the backyard of a home 3 yards away from mine and just figured that's where he lived. Other people probably saw the cat in my yard and assumed it was mine. Anyway, it's a sad story but pet owners should not assume that their pets will be safe roaming the streets....See MoreHow do I keep my neighbor's cat out of my potted plants
Comments (10)Good luck asking her to keep them home...if it works, please come ask my neighbors to keep their dogs home- they poop in the yard, drag stuff out of its place in the barn, bit my dog and myself.... Anyway- there is a product that you put in the soil- I'm sure someone here will know the name- it is supposed to repel dogs and cats also, I think. I'd hate to use mothballs, as they stink to us and I do not know if mothballs really work. Can you temporarily put rocks/shells- something like that so the cat can't dig in the dirt to 'cover-up'? If it can't 'cover', it might not want to use it as a litterbox??? Spray the cat with a waterhose if you are able to...might make it think twice.....See Moreannzgw
