OMG - can you EVEN imagine?!?!?!??!

Cherry Coke Salad

From the kitchen of Ricky & Shelby Dunbar

2 boxes of cherry gelatin

8 ounces of cream cheese

1 can of dark red cherries (save juice)

1 small can of crushed pineapple (save juice)

2 cups of coke

marshmallows & pecans (optional)

Dissolve the gelatin in the saved juices. Once dissolved, add cream cheese (it's best to cube) and cans of fruit, mix well. Take off heat and add the coke, and marshmallows (if desired). Add to bowl and refrigerate until molded.

Actually I can.... I was catering Thanksgiving Dinner about 5 years ago for some very nice people. It was very important that I followed a recipe that was very similar for the dinner. It was a family tradition. All I can say is....YUK!

Diet Coke for me. If I'm out and they bring me pepsi instead they are the devil and I send it back and get mountain dew or some other citrusy thing pepsi makes. There is just no contest, I'll spend whatever it takes for DC. I also stay true to Jiff. :)

Regarding the herbal teas: I am a big fan of Celestial Seasonings -- Red Zinger, Mixed Berry Zinger. I make "refrigerator iced tea" -- just put a few packets in a plastic jug, add cold water, pop in the fridge and wait a few hours. Delish; no need to add Splenda or whatever. Last time I stocked up on them when they were on sale at the grocery store, the clerk probably thought I was reselling them on the black market or something! My other non-soda beverage of choice is cold water with something I've mentioned on a post here about favorite finds: True Lime, crystallized lime (they're the consistency of granulated sugar). Love that stuff.

Kosher Coke

China (brand) cola is made with sugar and the organic & natural foods section of our (Vermont) Hannaford supermarket has it. Also the same store carries Polar Classic soda, also with sugar, in their regular soft drink isle. I bought a six pack of Polar Classic black cherry. A few years back we stopped drinking carbonated beverages to avoid HFCS, and I switched to plain seltzer water because I like the sparkling effect. I had planned to occasionally use sugar and flavoring to make my own soft drinks when the mood for a sweeter drink struck, but now with the marketing of these retro soda pops there's no need. I do hope the demand for corn for ethanol production will cause a wholesale removal of HFCS from our food supply. It is so pervasive that we have to read every label from soup to ketchup to avoid it.

OH yeah.....
Actually that's one of the best Jello salads.
Another "good" one ( and remember the terms are all relative!) is the one with orange jello, mixed according to directions but sub 1/2 cup of water for 1/2 cup of sherry wine....and arrange sliced apricot halves stuffed with a little ball of cream cheese and canned cherries pierced with a slivered almond in a 7 1/2 by 11 dish and pour the spiked jello over the top...
As Jell-o salad goes not too bad!
Much better than the one my mother made with green jello and a can of Campbell's vegetarian vegetable soup, drained mixed in and poured over halves of hardboiled eggs arranged like evil eyes in a dish....
That was really nasty!!!!

Oh my........pass!

I do have one jello salad recipe that is really, really good. I haven't made it in a million years. Maybe I'll resurrect it for Christmas if I can find the recipe. It had a lime jello layer, then canned sliced pears pressed into a jello and sour cream layer, then another lime jello layer....or something like that. Truly it was very good.

I'm so glad you said yuck. When I saw this thread I thought -- can it be possible?

My mom comes from a small town in PA. A number of years ago they did a local cookbook. It was filled with recipes similar to this. Ugh.

A family salad that must be served at all holidays, started long before I came into the family, and I still keep the tradiiton today and everyone loves it and it is almost identical, except it is called "Dr. Pepper salad" and you sub the DP for the Coke and instead of cherries, you use marachino cherries and you heat the DP and dissolve the jello, then you put all in processor, except marshmallows, which wasn't on "the" recipe. I smile everytime I make it, brings back alot of fun family holiday memories and with alot of family members now gone that's cool.

try it, you might be surprised, but then I'm no ace of a cook here either, plus I've been known to use a can of mushroom soup...lol.

Oh, we have an ever-present "Pink Jello Salad" at all holidays too.

Strawberry jello, cream cheese, cool whip (none of that 'real' stuff now), canned fruit cocktail.

It's...............well, it's....................PINK.

But you should hear the complaints if it isn't on the table!
Sometimes I guess it's just worth the memories!
