Kosher Coke

If you can't find the Mexican Coke where you live, then look for Kosher Coke at this time of year. It's made with sugar instead of HFCS, and there is quite a difference in the taste, the real sugar version is FAR better.

I've heard a lot about this lately. Some products are being switched from HFCS to real sugar. Apparently, because of the production of ethynol, among other things, the price of sugar and HFCS are much closer now, so some manufacturers are switching back to sugar.

I avoid as much processed food as I can, but I do still eat some, so I'm still getting HFCS in a lot of things, but the less of it being used, the better. I never drink tonic (soda) other than Diet Coke, so the HFCS/sugar issue in drinks wasn't really an issue for me.

Of course a ton of sugar isn't good for you either! And I know, I know - Diet Coke is probably worse, but it's my one vice (that and vodka martinis, of course!)

I probably don't drink a real coke once a year, but a few years ago I had a locally produced root beer, made with real sugar, and it was incredibly better than anything I've ever had with HFCS. It's not just a flavor thing, but a mouth-feel, as well. The real Coke is the same, very different from the standard Coke. If you haven't tried it, even if you rarely ever drink sodas or sugary Cokes, give this a try and see the difference.

I'm with you, tho. Diet Coke and martinis. And wine....

May, several years ago, you posted your Vegetable Kugel recipe. (I've reposted it below.) Your notes say that the flavor was good, but it didn't hold together well, and you would add more matzo meal or potato starch next time. Did you ever experiment further? I'd like to try the recipe this year, with a couple of changes. I was thinking that it needs a few eggs to bind it together: maybe 3 or 4 for that volume of veggies and matzo meal. I'm also considering the addition of some chopped sweet onion, raisins, or even pineapple. Any other suggestions? Here's the recipe: Kugel (Sweet Potato Carrot Apple) Ingredients: 2 cups grated Red Delicious apples 2 cups grated raw sweet potato 2 cups grated raw carrot 1 cup matzo meal 1 stick margarine, melted 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar Instructions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (160 degrees Celsius or Centigrade). Grease a 9-by-13-inch (22.5 cm x 32.5 cm) pan. In a large bowl, combine apple, sweet potato, carrot, matzo meal, margarine, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar; mix well. Pour into prepared pan. Cover with aluminum foil; bake 45 minutes. Increase oven heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius or Centigrade), remove cover, and bake an additional 15 minutes. Coconut Cream Dessert Prep Time: 20 Minutes Cook Time: 20 Minutes Ready In: 40 Minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients: 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 cup cold butter 1/2 cup chopped pecans FILLING: 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 cup confectioners' sugar 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed 4 cups cold milk 3 (3.5 ounce) packages instant coconut cream pudding mix 1/2 cup flaked coconut, toasted Directions: 1. In a bowl, combine the flour and sugar; cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in the pecans. Press into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Bake at 325 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack. 2. In a small mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and confectioners' sugar until smooth; fold in 1 cup whipped topping. Spread over the crust. I'm in the minority as well. I have been drinking soda (or "pop" as it's called in my neck of the woods) for over 60 years with no ill effects. I won't drink diet soda. I drank more when I was young but I still like it now with hamburgers, pizza, french fries, things like that. Or just because. Barqs used to have cream soda, root beer, grape, orange and a lime green flavor that were great. There aren't too many sodas I don't like but I usually get Coke or Pepsi. I know they taste different and that doesn't bother me. I try to remain open minded on that subject. :) I have gone several months without drinking pop but sooner or later something will call me back. It's one thing I like about flying is getting ginger ale. I just like it once in awhile and that is my treat when flying (which I don't care for). I try not to have it in the house and drink it only when out just to control how much I drink. But if I am having something salty, a Coke really hits the spot.

Soup mix? If so, it'll also be heavy with salt. There's the classic sour cream dip--don't use the whole packet with only a pint of sour cream! Stir into the cream and let it set and hydrate in the fridge for at least an hour. There's a traditional (20th C.) brisket recipe which is very good, and uses packaged goods that one can get with a kosher mark, thereby cutting down on flavorings one has to stock. But it doesn't have to be kosher. People love it. On a full brisket or two tips, in a deep roaster, score the fat cap down to the meat in two directions. Sear if you like, though it's not required. Pour and spread about 2/3-3/4 bottle Heinz "chili sauce" (a ketchup cousin), or as much as is needed to cover. Sprinkle most of a large (full pot sized) onion soup packet over the top. If it looks thoroughly sprinkled before it's all used up, save a little out. Pour one can of caffeine free, sugar-in Coke around the sides. Braise for an hour at 350° F to get the fat melting and browning, then reduce to 275° F for an additional 6-8 hrs (depending on weight and thickness). Chill overnight in the pan with juice. Remove the solidified fat. Take the brisket out of the juice and slice, taking care to go across the grain in all directions (there are three different muscles in a whole brisket). Return to the pan and spoon juice between each slice. Add the remainder of the sauce and soup mix to the top. Add more Coke if necessary. Again, depending on the size and weight, cook for 4-6 more hours at 275° F, and raise to 350-375° for the last hour, making sure there's still plenty of liquid. The timing is highly variable. You want to render as much of the fat down as possible, while having a nice long cook to make the meat really tender, while keeping it juicy. The chili sauce and Coke have the sugar necessary to help break down the connective tissue that can make brisket tough, as well as the acid. The large amount of salt and other flavoring in the mix and sauce should provide sufficient seasoning.

Anybody have an idea where to find this in southeastern PA?
I looked at my store (Giant) this morning, but no luck. I have never seen Kosher Coke, and didn't know it existed.
I'd love to taste some sugar-based Coke again.

I found Coke made with sucrose today at Wegman's. It was in the section with all the Passover products. I just looked at the ingredients on the different Coke products till I found what I wanted. They only had sucrose Coke in 2 liter bottles.

Try a store in a neighborhood with a lot of Jewish customers. It may not be in all stores, and will probably not be with the regular soft drinks. Check the Kosher food section.

Here's a little info. I could have sworn I saw I think sugar based Pepsi in cans too at Albertsons. I'm pretty sure atleast one of them is going to put it on the market for more than Passover.

Terri and Jessica, I just saw Pepsi and Mountain Dew made with sugar, it's called "Throwback". I bought Ashley the Mountain Dew and she didn't like it, she said it tasted funny. LOLOLOL Now, with all that sweetener, how could she possibly tell?

I drink iced tea, plain with no sweetener or other flavorings, so it's pretty consistent. (grin)

Walmart has been selling the Throwback Dew in 20oz bottles here. My husband is a Dew lover and LOVES the Throwback.

You can also get Pepsi and Dew in 12pk cans.
If enough people buy it..I bet they'll start carrying it for real!

jessica, I found it in my tiny little independent grocery, but Amanda bought the Throwback Mountain Dew at Meijer's and I think at Walmart too. We must be a target area or something, LOL.

I've seen the pepsi and Mtn. Dew throwback at Target and Walmart. We ended up buying a flat of the mexican coke at Sam's Club last time we went. Looks like they will be carrying that for awhile.

China (brand) cola is made with sugar and the organic & natural foods section of our (Vermont) Hannaford supermarket has it. Also the same store carries Polar Classic soda, also with sugar, in their regular soft drink isle. I bought a six pack of Polar Classic black cherry.

A few years back we stopped drinking carbonated beverages to avoid HFCS, and I switched to plain seltzer water because I like the sparkling effect. I had planned to occasionally use sugar and flavoring to make my own soft drinks when the mood for a sweeter drink struck, but now with the marketing of these retro soda pops there's no need.

I do hope the demand for corn for ethanol production will cause a wholesale removal of HFCS from our food supply. It is so pervasive that we have to read every label from soup to ketchup to avoid it.
