Cumin, oregano, garlic and chili powder could make that a Tex-Mex Pasta!

The peppers and onions maybe end up together as a side dish something like this:

Ingredients For Russian Sweet Bell Peppers And Onions Recipe:

5 bell peppers
3 onions
3 tbsp oil
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tsp salt
4 tsp sugar
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp vinegar
1 can (14 oz) of chopped tomatoes

Directions For Russian Sweet Bell Peppers And Onions Recipe:

Slice the onions.

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the onions, stir, and cook, stirring periodically, for 5 minutes.

While the onions are cooking, slice the bell peppers (cut them in half, scoop out the seeds with a spoon and discard the seeds, then slice the peppers). Add bell peppers to the frying pan and cook, stirring periodically, for 5 minutes.

Mix ketchup, salt, garlic powder, sugar and vinegar and add to the peppers and onions. Add chopped tomatoes and stir. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

Serve cold.

Pasta and plain sauce sounds like something a young fellow might aspire to.

And warmed corn as a side is my guess.

Tex Mex pasta gets my vote - and use the onions n Vodka Gibsons!

We didn't have to order Pizza. I suggested that he should saute the peppers a little before mixing everything together. So he did and then added all the other ingredients, sprinkled some Parmesan on top and voila! It was surprisingly good. I think the Vodka sauce covered the lack of any other seasonings. :)
We will see what next week brings...

I love the idea of having your kids cook once a week. I did that with mine when they were growing up. DD would always but a lot of thought into her meals and DS would usually have hot dogs and tater tots or mac and cheese and hot dogs.
They are in their mid 40's now....DD cooks some and DS loved to try new recipes for his wife and kids.

I did the same with my two boys when they were pre-teens. They also are both in their 40's now and still single.

Seems like everything they made had crushed potato chips on top, and oh yes, frequently Tater-Tots. Regardless of what they turned out we always called it Dumb Casserole.

Today they're both super cooks. . . and can be very creative as well. They both can cook circles around me!

I'm not too worried about DS leaving the nest and surviving. Our long term (1 1/2 year) guest on the other hand needs to learn how to boil water basically.

I am glad to see that other people - besides Lou - suggest recipes using garlic powder. I'm sure a version using fresh garlic would be preferable to some. However - if you are stuck out East in the after math of that awful snow storm I'm sure any garlic would work.

@ Glaserberl: I'm glad the meal came together in an edible fashion. The ingredients and the heritage of your guest were the reasons the recipe I posted came to mind. Not long ago a friend of mine were talking and he mentioned having a meal at the abode of friends, a Czech/Russian couple. They prepared a side dish he referred to as "peppers and onions Russian-style." Apparently he was suffering severe heartburn as a result.

I was both curious about something called "Russian-style" and why it should cause him such distress. I found this recipe.

It seemed like a possible outcome, given the ingredients you had. :) But it was not a recommended recipe.

My son just turned 21. Recently he asked for some cooking instruction. We shopped for a good basic cookbook with methods and ingredient information. I outfitted him with a set of basic herbs and spices and a few tools. He won't starve and he makes very good coffee.

My 12 year old son cooks lunch every Sunday. It's either grilled cheese or hotdogs. But at least he tries! Someday, it'll be much more, I'm just sure of it.

Keep up your good work Glaserberl, he'll soon be outside his comfort zone and asking you how to make much more complicated things.

I told the boys that they needed to let me know tonight the menu for next week so I could go shopping tomorrow. DS wants to make pork chops, baked sweet potato wedges and frozen green beans. He started out with a pork loin roast. He found a recipe for that and the sweet potatoes on the internet. I asked him to look at the oven temperatures for both and tell me how he was going to make it work. He quickly decided on pork chops. Lubos wants to do chicken breast, mashed potatoes and corn. He is utilizing the canned corn he bought too much of for this weeks meal. I don't think he has peeled a potato yet. I'll be there for verbal support and emergency intervention only.
