You may have to dig for the information, or find someone to make them, but she might be able to use overalls or jumpers. I did a quick research and there are some women's overalls, and also jumpers which could be longer in length, maybe down to her ankles, so she does not trip. I think some of the Amish women wear those occasionally.

There are suspenders that button - do you think that would be easier for your Mom. Of course you'd have to sew buttons on her pants to use them. I found a link so you can see them, but I'm sure you can get them cheaper than that site.

Thank you. Well, she has loads of pants so I don't think she would consider buying overalls but the button suspenders is an interesting idea. I'll look into that.

My step-father got his bladder removed and now wears an ostomy. The placement of it prevents him wearing a belt.
He's always worn his shirts tucked in, with a belt.

He now uses suspenders under his golf shirts, and leaves them untucked. He got buttons sewn on the inside of his waistbands.

Since she probably does not want to invest in a new wardrobe I would consider buying wide (1") elastic and making them into "permanent" suspenders on her pants. Try an older pair first and once you get them the way you want them, do the rest. Have her put on one pair of pants. Pin two strips in place at the back of the pants, cross them over (still at the back) and pin them at the front of the waistband. Make them snug, but loose enough so that once they are sewn down she can just (shrug) out of them to use the restroom or to undress. And to make them less likely to fall off her shoulders, stitch the two pieces of elastic together where they cross at the back. It may cost a bit to do this to all of her pants, but her comfort is worth it. If you buy soft elastic, she can wear this next to her skin and wear her blouses over them.

wearing them under shirts is a hassle because to go to the restroom you have to take your shirt off to let the suspenders down if they are sewn on. You could sew in the back and put a button or hook of some type in the front so she could release them with out having to undress.

My Mom hates elastic so we started having pants made with a drawstring waist, since she has arthritis and can not tie a bow we had those little slider things put on that you just push on and slide then let go and it locks in place, works well she is able to tighten them up just how she wants them. Some of her pants that had elastic could be re-done to include the drawstring.

Ravencajun, you're right. I didn't think of the hassle of removing a shirt first. I was just thinking that she might now want others to see the suspenders.

Depending on how bad her arthritis is though, I do think that stitching the suspenders down both at front and back would still be a good idea.

I have a pair of pants "Sans-a-belt" (means "no belt") that had operational elastic some time ago but, though they are in good condition (I'm wearing them now, they covered my faults at churches this morning), the elastic got old and tired some time ago, and they took up an unsatisfactory habit of ... sliding.

A friend gave me a air of wide red suspenders (think Larry King) but one of the clamps had got old and a bit tired, as well, and didn't have the tenacity that it once had.

I thought to try to do something with it, using Vice-grip pliers, but haven't yet ... so have folded over a piece of scrap cloth a couple of times and that construction allows that clamp to do its job as it once did.

In coolish weather, how about wearing a sweeater or light jacket over those things that keep you in suspense?

I called Wally and yep, he slips his arms out of his shirt to pull down his suspenders. I honestly didn't think of that at all.

Next time you are in a clothing store, head over to the Mens Section and look for a pair of suspenders for holding up trousers. Choose a pair with the best clips.

When you find a pair that works for you, buy another psir for a spare. Those things do not work forever and may "let you down" when you are in a rush. Also, these days, you can not depend on a store to have the same thing in stock a month later. So, buy spares when available.
