I think the long panels would be lovely. However, I wouldn't do a valance with them. It gives a strong horizontal line where you want height.

I've seen both of those panels, IRL, and the BB&B drapes do look better in person. I think the ones from Penny's might be a bit formal for your room. It would depend on what kind of furniture you'll be putting in the room, I suppose, but the rest of the room looks pretty casual.

How much privacy do you need the coverings to provide? With so many windows, just getting the rods and rings in black might give you all of that color you need to bring in from the kitchen. Then you could just add another accent in the room to tie it all together.

I don't need a lot of privacy in that room, so that's not an issue.

You're probably right that the JCP ones are too formal. I sure like them though!

Where does everyone buy their draperies without going through an expensive designer?

Even if I buy ready-mades, it's still going to be quite expensive for that room. So I really don't want to make a costly mistake and regret it later.

Any suggestions for alternatives?

I think that those JCPenney ones would be fabulous. I see where they are more towards the formal side, but there is something very playful about them so I wouldn't worry about them being too formal. I think they would be great- and love the touches of black.
and you know JCP is having a huge sale on window treatments. (just sayin')

I adore your house! You posted a pic of your kitchen cabinets eons ago, which pursued my hubby to let me have the cream-colored w/ toffee glazing ones we ended up with. (thank you- I LOVE THEM!)

I love the ones from Penneys. Can you purchase them and try them out? They have a good return policy. Otherwise, the 'right' ones will come along. Alot of great helpers on this forum.

Jan, I remember your kitchen so well, it's one that I just love. The rest of your house is beautiful as well.

Are you planning to redistribute a little of that gorgeous red into the room? I don't think you should just ignore it and go totally brown. Between the Madden and BBB curtains, I vote for the BBB (with no valance). The Maddens are too black and too much of a contrast, and well, just... too much IMO. The BBBs will be softer. It's a lovely room, love the FP.

If you don't mind, I have a question about the BM Wilmington Tan -- does it have a green undertone? Does it "green out" with artificial light at night?

I really like the penney's drapes. Since you're getting new furniture, I think you can make them work, even though your prior furniture was more casual.

I think lighter brown furniture (i.e. tan, taupe, khaki, camel) would work with those drapes; I dont' know about darker browns though.

Jan, trust your own instincts. There are many options, but only what you love is best in the long run. The windows won't stand alone, so fill the room with what you love. What room 'feeling' do you want most? If the furniture is replaced, I think as the most expensive functional investment, I might want to enjoy that selection first, then add drapes to compliment the furnishings?

I just love those JCP panels, and personally don't think they'd be too formal for that lovely room. I see that you already ordered them, so will be anxious to see a new photo when you get them hung in the great room.

I think the JCPenney panels have much more style than the BBB ones...

They're a little bland looking to me. With your red kitchen you need something in the FR with a little attitude.

My only other thought is to wait to buy any window treatments until you get your furniture in there. You don't want to be picking out furniture based on matching window treatments from JCP? If they were $$$ custom ones, then maybe, but I'd do the furniture first then the windows. You might have a totally different feeling about the room once you get new furniture.

I haven't yet ordered anything - analysis paralysis - if you know what I mean.

I don't know when we'll be able to afford an entire living room set. It's more likely we'll do a bit at a time. I thought maybe I'd go for draperies because they're less expensive for now. But I understand that if I do, I may regret it later. The windows seem sort of naked right now. Sigh . . .

I definitely want to bring red into the room from the kitchen. I'm envisioning red, cream, black, and gold. I really like those colors. And if brown works in the mix, all the better.
