Does a regular cake mix fill a 12 up bundt pan?

Or will I need two?

How far from the edge do you fill a bundt pan without it baking over the top?

I remember back in the late 70's (I think) when you could buy a chocolate bundt box mix that had a tunnel of coconut in it, man, I loved that cake!

I think I am crazy, but I have to buy these three bundt pans. I like them all so much.

It's been a long time since I've baked cakes, but if memory serves me, a regular boxed cake mix is right at 6 cups of batter. So, a 12 cup pan would be two boxes of mix.

I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen a 12 cup Bundt pan. The fancy shapes hold about 9 or 10 cups, don't they?

The Flora pan has a very pretty shape. I still Like the swirl the best, though.

I think you should be able to use a standard two-layer cake mix in your Bundt pan. If you fill the pan too full, the batter won't bake properly. If you use less batter, the cake just will be lower/shorter than you might expect. Here is some more information:

Just fill the pan with cups of water. The total cups of water will be the same as your batter capacity. ... Only fill the pans 2/3 full. Baking and cooling times vary according to batter density.

The Nordicware site www.nordicware.com/files/bake-perfect-bundt.pdf says to fill the pan about 3/4 full.

linea56 - The URL here has answers to the question of getting rid of highlighted or underlined text, depending on what browser you are using. About crevices in fancy bundt pans - I bought small/medium new artist's brushes (natural hair round ones work best), sterilized them and marked them "for food use only". It makes quick work of spreading the spray, butter, shortening, or homemade Pam and you won't get the "too much oil" problem that makes bubbles. Other sizes I use in the kitchen include a 1" wide one that looks like a paint brush for watering down the insides of pans when I make candy, jam, or something that should not have stray undissolved sugar clinging there since it might cause the food to recrystallize after cooking to high temp. Lots cheaper and better made than those sold exclusively for food prep. Tan natural bristles are best, IMO, because they can be sterilized, while nylon or poly brushes do not last long on really hot pans. They are decadent little suckers, aren't they?! ;-D For anyone else interested in these little gems, here is the recipe: Vanilla Bean Butter-Rum Poundcakes 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 vanilla bean 1-1/2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup buttermilk, room temperature Glaze 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup butter 1-1/2 tablespoons water pinch of salt 2 tablespoons dark rum Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter and flour muffin tin. Cream butter in bowl of mixer. Slowly add sugar and beat for two minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition of egg. Add vanilla extract. Split vanilla bean and scrape inside into batter. Reserve vanilla bean pod. Beat for approximately two more minutes, until batter is fluffy and creamy. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. At low speed, add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, ending with flour mixture. Pour batter into prepared pan, and bake for 30 - 35 minutes, or until golden and cake tester comes out clean. Remove pan to cooling rack set over baking sheet for 5 minutes. Remove cakes from pan to cooling rack. Poke several holes in each cake with thin skewer/ cake tester. Pour glaze slowly over cakes until cakes absorb glaze and glaze is used up. Serve when completely cooled. Make glaze: Put sugar, butter, water, vanilla pod, and salt to small saucepan. Stirring constantly, bring to boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes. Thanks for all the ideas! I am printing these out to store inside the pan. As annoyed as I was, I was tempted to toss this difficult pan. But it was a $ treat to myself a few years back, so I shouldn't blame the pan. I eventually got it out. After working down the grooves with a popsicle stick, I let it sit while I worked on achieving a more zen state. Half an hour later I went back in with a flexible rubber spatula, which could curve down into the top, and went down all the sides again. It finally came out, with some cracks and a chunk out of the top. Those responded well to camouflage with the lemon glaze. One thing about that pan, the cake glazes very prettily: everything drips down the grooves. The grooves were not sharply defined, as a lot of the surface was still stuck to the pan (I had to use a toothbrush to wash those grooves in the pan afterward) It wasn't the included strawberry pieces that caused it to stick. I had tossed them with flour, as the other poster suggested on my other thread, and it worked. They did sink to about the bottom third of the pan. My daughter was very impressed with how the cake looked. Even though her birthday dinner is tonight, we let her "have at" the cake when she got home at 10 pm. She needed a reward (just finished college finals). I was surprise at how good it tasted. It had a really nice brown crust. I put half the glaze on while it was still warm, and it soaked in and was really good. The strawberry inside (which I had never done before) was surprisingly good.

I have never made an angel food cake in a bundt pan, but have made probably 300 in a regular angel food cake pan. When my son was little he was allergic to egg whites, so I made an ange lfood cake about every week for about 3 or 4 years. Only once did I use a mix and that was a few years back when I some sort of a brain fart and forgot to mix the sugar with the flour....and I had promised to bring an angel food cake. So I bought a mix....but it was much more dense than home made. Perhaps your cake was from a mix? My angelfood cake...1 1/2 cups egg whites fills a standard angel food pan to the brim when baked. If it did climb the bundt pan, ti would likely over flow most bundt pans. When my cake is baked and cool....lots longer than 20 minutes, I twist the tube in the center to loosen the cake, and run a knife around the sides from top to bottom to loosen the cake and then turn it over and shake. It won't come oujt of the pan unless I loosen it....and that would be impossible with a knife.

Yep, Alice is right. I'm wrong. You can't fill the pans all the way.

You can buy bundt cake mixes, including Tunnel of Fudge, on Amazon or Nordic Ware. That coconut one sounded good, but unfortunately it is not available.

Beanthere - I ordered three! I got the Charlotte instead of the Classic though. They are so different, I had to have them all. Merry Christmas to me? The descriptions all say 12 cup capacity. And instawares had the lowest prices and free shipping, so I think I got a great deal. $75.41 total.

I'm not a big chocolate lover, so Tunnel of Fudge doesn't call out to me, but I found some great recipes at Allrecipes and Recipezaar. I have to bring desserts to work and the bar we shoot pool at a few times a year, plus we have a lot of dinner parties - so these will make it easy! And easy to transport! I usually make crack candy or bourbon balls, this will be so much easier.

And I'm going to try a meatloaf in it! Dressing will be so pretty too. Let's see, what else takes to forms.....

i'm here trying to see if I need one box cake mix or two for my bundt pan, i think it must be a 10 cup pan as I could fit at least 10 cups water in to the very top, usually I do just one cake mix and have a flatter/shorter cake. Ah, man. I still miss that Chocolate macaroon cake. Sorry about not being able to help with the current question though--I haven't made a box cake in ages.

Whatever cake mix or from-scratch recipe you use, it's a good rule of thumb to fill the pan about 2/3 full of batter.

Remember cake mixes do not have as many ounces as they did back in the 70's.
