I completely gut and remodel my kitchen every 6 weeks to keep up with current trends.

That's hilarious! I never understood the attraction of granite in the first place; it shows every water spot and seems hard to maintain.

Lordy, what will they do over on the home dec forum?

lol, krame...

i, too, have always chosen white appliances, over fashion...and have never cared for granite...yes, my counters are beginning to show their age (done in 2000 laminate)but would love to have ones i saw the other day that mimic concrete (a quartz product it was) or have you seen the glass ones?

the problem for me is the grout between the tile...

Well, it's all my fault I'm afraid. We just remodeled our kitchen with granite and all stainless steel appliances. You can always tell when a trend is nearing its end or completely passed as that is when we step up to the plate and follow it. LOL

Jodi-

LOL kframe. Cute.

I hope the next trend is formica and almond appliances.

I have white applicances but absolutely love my granite countertops - they are very easy to maintain - nothing special and nothing bothers them. I can set a pot on them right off the stove.

I have black appliances, but of all the colors I think almond was my favorite.

I like the colors in my counter tops I have now, but in a couple of years they will have to be replaced because a certain Great Dane pup has eaten the end off of them in two places in my kitchen. I have tape over them now to keep water from getting in them, but mind you, it is a beautiful ebony color to match my appliances.

I like the look of granite, but now that I'm retired it is no longer in my budget.

Linda

I'm happy to hear it. I absolutely hate granite. My dh wanted to put it in this house, but decided since it wasn't going to raise the selling point of the house he could wait. It'll save us money now that I don't need the sledge hammer to bust it out.

I'm not in love with stainless either, but I could stand it better.

Well, thanks a LOT, Jodi! Nice going, ruining it for everyone!

We have a man-made "granite" that we like a lot. The only time I don't like it is when I lean against it and it's freezing cold on my skin, yikes!

LOL, Mike!

Since I have never felt it necessary to be "in style", I won't be disappointed, LOL.

Oh NO! Jodi----That's always been my job. I can kill a fashion trend in 60 seconds flat.

I have almond appliances and i love them,i also have butcherblock counter tops. The only thing stainless i have is the sink.I've never liked stainless steel, and always thought it was just a trend, and that it would pass.

I'm frugal so i stay away from trendy!! lol
Kathi

Jodi, did you have your granite before I did? Maybe I'm responsible! Mine was installed in May of 2004.

Jodi, Your kitchen is absolutely beautiful!

I have all black appliances including a black granite sink. I love them.

I too chose tile over granite simply because I like the look better than any granite I could afford.
Of course the granite I liked was always the very highest end of the price spectrum.

Yea, it's your fault Jodi. I don't know how you can live with this old stuff. You'll suffer through it, I'm guessing!

Here is a link that might be useful:

I just want a new kitchen faucet. LOL! I don't even have a garbage disposal or dishwasher.

mylab123 - I agree - Tiles are the very best, in any form. Granite is so cold........

I'm setting by Donna. My appliances are almond too.
Leslie

I have all white appliances except the microwave. Hope to change that one of these days. I was never that fond of stainless and I don't have granite. I like something that is easy to roll pie dough on and won't scratch easily.

Sue

Susanjf,

I would love to see the counters that mimic concrete. Do you have a name?

When you say Glass are you talking clear glass countertops? What a maintenance nightmare that would be in my house.

I am sick of granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. In my kitchen I have almond appliances, tanish formica, and a cork floor (blue and almond squares).

I have formica and it's fine for this house. I hate tile. DD has it and it's awful. We would both like to take a sledge hammer to it.

Linda

I don't pay much attention to the decorator trends.....I go for function and lower prices.
So I have a white refrigerator, a black d/w, stainless steel rice cooker and coffee maker, almond stove and almond countertops.
I am happy I have a roof over my head and can afford to buy groceries.

That sounds like Mom and Apple Pie, Carol!

Wish I could say that, but alas....I did granite and stainless too. I will however, NOT do white, avacado, or harvest gold. I just paid a mint to get rid of that gold.

"When you say Glass are you talking clear glass countertops?"

I can answer this one!! No, not clear glass countertops. They are countertops made from recycled glass, and they are AWESOME! The two best-known companies/brands are Vetrazzo and Ice Stone.

WOW! Those are beautiful!

I hear that one needs a wiping rag in one's hand at least half time, with stainless steel.

And don't drop anything fragile on granite.

Seventy years ago, folks in town had ice boxes.

Sixty years ago they began to build fridges.

Fifty years ago they made fridges that lasted forty years.

Now, having developed technology that can put a man/person on the moon ... they make fridges that last for 10 years.

Have to keep the economy going, you see.

Meanwhile - they're building a landfill within a couple of miles of my house that'll soon be a mountain.

With folks in the third world now getting fridges in quantity ...we can no longer afford such foolishness.

Earn less (and, with a lot of the stuff that we're buying being made there and people here out of work, we'll have little choice) and make fridges that'll last for fifty years (at least) ... with millions more people using them.

And using the energy needed, both to build them and to feed them, will require developing new kinds of energy sources, and we'll need to do a lot more worrying about both pollution ... and ... global warming.

We need to build stuff for our use that'll last far longer ... and encourage others to enjoy those simple blessings that we've had for ... what? - less than a hundred years.

It's only fair.

ole joyful

I'm hoping my kitchen comes back in style! It's at least 40 years old in appearance. Never did like stainless steel. I have white appliances but almond would be nice too.

We have bisque appliances and laminate counters. I chose bisque for the appliances because our house is modest and of a certain "period" and I wanted the appliances to blend rather than stand out. I like bisque and hope I'll be able to find them again when the need arises. We have laminate counters as well, and I like laminate ;o) About 4 1/2 years ago I re-laminated them because I disliked the color I had originally chosen. Now, you can't really change out a countertop when you get tired of it if it's granite and want a bit of a change because that would be a real waste of money. I'm also the type of gal that likes to give the interior of the house a "facelift" every so often, so laminate counters work for me in that aspect. I'm getting ready to re-laminate them again. It will cost me around $120 for the materials because I've got all the tools from the last time. DH is happy because for a small amount of $$ the kitchen will get a new look. I've never been one to follow trends whether it be in home interiors or clothing. But it's funny because I always seem to be ahead of the curve by not being with the curve. When the trend was nickel and oil-rubbed bronze faucets starting about 8 years ago when we did our bath remodel, I put in chrome because it's timeless. Now everyone is going back to chrome. Hey! I'm there. I don't think classic and timeless ever go out of style, so I'm good LOL.

I put my own black microwave in to this kitchen. There are green counter tops, stainless sink and electric cooktop, black dishwasher and light cabinets.

Only thing I want to change as soon as money is available: cut out one cabinet and put my free standing gas stove from the last house there. Reason it will be costly (to us at least) we need gas piped to there first.

Oh, the day we go back to one house only ownership will be GREAT.

Moni
PS, I really had to laugh at Michaels remark!

I have almond appliances, a 1950's (gasp) WHITE double cast iron sink, and ummmmmmmm 30 year old BROWN formica counter tops! I wonder how many different times I have been in style :^)

Had Almond so when they quite running I chose Bisque. They match my painted woodwork. Have an old, old house with wood cupboards and laminate counter tops. Vinyl floor. Would love tile but daughter has it and hates it. cold during the winter and the dogs always seem to track stuff on it. I love the way it looks but too old to change my ways. No dishwasher or garbage disposal either. Had kids (dishwasher) is what I tell people when they say How did you ever get along without one. Not hard, if you don't have it you don't miss it.

I like looking at all the new stuff but do you really need it. Not in my life.

I also don't have the dishwasher or garbage disposal, never had them so never missed them.
Kathi

I'm with the almond bunch and I also don't have a dishwasher or garbage disposal...BUT I do have a new faucet on the sink! After having a drip for what seemed forever, DH waited until I left for my Florida visit, called a plumber and I'm now the owner of a new, big, "easier to rinse pots", thing, complete with a spray....At least it doesn't drip....
I also said I wanted a new tub which he and the plumber took care of....Another story for another time!

Aww...man! I hope the new style is cheap, plywood, 70's cabinets, fake woodgrain countertops and part white and part black and stainless appliances. If so - I'm gonna be right on the cusp of high style....ROFLMBO

Hey, I got lucky this fall. I had wanted a new kitchen for years. I sort of got one. I had been buying things for a new kitchen for years, new sink, range, dishwasher and stuff. Well, the cabinets where the old sink was were so bad, they couldn't even be repaired. Anyway. I ended up having my daughter painting my old cabinets and we got new where the sink was and she painted those. I had the new hardware for years and that went on. I only got a new counter top where the sink side was. I also got the garbage disposal, nice antique bronze faucet with the tall curved part big enough to put a bucket under and the sprayer in it. Then I got all new light fixtures. Plus a bit later I got the reverse osmosis water filtering system put in. I am so happy with everything. I waited so long, my oven hadn't worked in years and when I wanted to bake I had to haul my stuff way out back to a little 3 room house we have and bake there and then haul everything back. I wanted new flooring, but not for now. I am very content with what I did get. Oh, husband and sons in law, son and daughters did all the work.

Sue

I don't like the look of stainless steel appliances either. I like my new white refrigerator. My stove is old and it is almond but the next one will be white whenever that is. My microwave is white too as is my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. My counters are black laminate and my cabinets are white.

I beat the trend when it came to the colour of my kitchen. LOL Hot colours now seem to be bright citrus colours for walls. 2 years ago against my painter's wishes I chose bright lemon meringue yellow walls. I love it and will never tire of it.

Anne

LMBO@yaya! But yaya, you have the design flair to make even that look good, so you have no worries! Seeing the pictures you've posted, you have a way of creating a look that I love!!

When we built five years ago, I opted for laminate because I wanted something VERY low maintenance. I love the stuff! I also think granite is cold.

As for appliances, I wanted almond (bisque?) but DH insisted on stainless. His was a good choice, but our laundry room has a white washer and dryer, and an almond freezer and extra fridge. Guess we are covering all the bases!

I never liked the black countertops and black or stainless steel appliances, although, some of the pictures I've seen are pretty. They just look too "formal" or industrial for me. I like white appliances. I still have an almond washing machine. Good thing it's behind doors.

We have black appliances and Uba Tuba granite counter tops. The color of appliances my come and go but granite is a classic. It will never go out of style. It is durable, easy to maintain, and looks beautiful to boot. They are just what my active family needs in a counter top. NancyLouise

Aww...thanks, okwriter! You're a peach! (Wait a minute, is that color/fruit "in" now? LOL)

You all think I'm kidding?

Does anyone need 130 stoves or refrigerators? They've only been used 6 weeks each. :-)

I know I live in the past, but my favorite look was "coppertone" appliances, that dark brown from the 60s. It was when Harvest Gold, Coppertone and Avocado were the big three styles. These days with the look of white, especially coupled with oak finished cabinets just screams Habitat for Humanity. I prefer almond, which morphed to bisque. White may be "timeless" but almond doesn't show the dirt, scratches and stains and is more neutral than white for most applications. If I had a choice, I'd choose black for appliances and gray for counters with a light color walls. Classy looking to me. But it all doesn't matter if the appliances don't work.

BTW, my 30 year old washer is avocado, which is one of the reasons I got a discount on it! Nobody wanted that color. Sales lady asked if I minded the color and I said I don't mind if the mice and cockroaches don't mind. It's going in the basement. To far too many, looks are everything, be it people or appliances. To me form follows function in the appliances and I know a lot of beautiful people with ugly insides. And few age as well as Dick Clark.

It's up to us as consumers not to buy into this crap. Kitchens are a huge investment and I think it's ridiculous to redo a kitchen because it's 'out-of-fashion'. I used to love to look through old women's magazines when I was in college. I would go to the library between classes and look at them and see the old styles. (This was before we had the internet for entertainment.) There are kitchens from every decade that I would still consider attractive. No one ever wasted time designing an ugly kitchen. Somebody liked it.

I wonder if my 'ckicken brooder lightl- with the clamp, mind you will make into Better Homes/Kitchen's Magazine.. It has been clamped to the new cupboards for 2 years now... It was VERY expensive- $8.99 at Tractor Supply. About the time I figure I'll break down and spend the $$ or an electrician to put a proper kitchen light up it will be time to redo again. At least my electric bill is cheap...

LOL ilmbg..I use a few of those too, but they are lighting the tortoises big blue rubbermaid tub that resides in my dining room...some kind of fashion statement that is! I'd rather have a cabinet of some sort there.

Well I have Corian counter tops and stainless and black appliances. I just finally put up a glass tile mosiac back splash after about 4 years the other stuff was replaced. LOL

I love my tiny kitchen and I don't care if it's a fashion statement or not.
