30 years ago, tipping every month was standard with paper delivery in our area (of course, not everyone tipped).

Delivering papers is actually a lot of work, at least it was. Carriers used to have to fold the papers and put them in plastic if it was wet out. They had to get the papers out at the same time every day no matter what the weather. They had to collect the money -a huge PITA. They had to remember exactly where every customer wanted their paper. I wasn't a regular carrier but I was backup for one friend and my best friend had a route too After we babysat on Saturday night (usually very late - the parents worked at their family-run restaurant), we had to get up early to get that Sunday paper out. This was all when we were about 12 years old!

Because our carrier not only delivers in town, but on rural routes and very seldom misses, I started including a tip every 3 months instead of once a year. Yes, there has always been a place to indicate the amount plus if you want to donate to the reading program that our paper provides. Believe me with all the snow he has had to deal with it earns every bit of it.

There has always been a place on our bill for the gratuity.

The Los Angeles Times does not include a tip area, but the Pasadena paper has had one for years.

Years ago when I subscribed it had that feature. I assume it still does.

If my newspaper has that I have never seen it.

I am on a rural route. I subscribe only to the weekend editions, which is Friday/Saturday/Sunday. And that only for the ads and TV Guide. The print has gotten so small, it is barely readable. The rest I read online.

Each Christmas season, the carrier includes a small Christmas card which has his name and address on it.

I give him a tip each year, especially because he delivers mine to my porch, not to the box across the street.

Have always had a Christmas card enclosed with deliverer's mailing address (hint hint). Since moving to our new home (same town) we have had sporadic non-delivery, no TV guide, etc. I mentioned to the circulation manager that we gave our delivery guy a good Christmas tip, and he said that a lot of them quit after getting some$$$ at Christmas, no we are now having to deal with new delivery people. This new one seems to really be on the ball :-)

We get the Washington Post, and they have a place for carrier tip. We get excellent delivery service, so I have always added a tip to the check. I have also contacted the Post a couple of times to rave about our carrier. He's been delivering our papers for more than 17 years, and we have never missed one paper!

My newspaper bill includes a place to add a tip and the current carrier is deserving of being remembered. Our paper is delivered within an hour of the same time daily, in plastic if wet out. She began delivering for us last October. About a week before Christmas she included with the paper her "Annual Christmas Newsletter" complete with her address and all about her growing family. This was the first we learned that she is a wife, mother of 3 under age 12 all of whom are involved in sports or dance. She deliveres, she claims, 734 papers daily! Huh!! Is that possible! The paper doesn't come out till about noon!

I never add a tip onto a regular bill, whether it's in a restaurant, a nail salon, or a newspaper.No way of knowing if the server actually gets the money. I cross out "tip" and instead hand the server the cash I want. For my newspaper delivery, the driver provides a pre-addressed envelope. I'll stick a fiver in once a month.And I give $20 at Christmas.
