It's been real hot in Long Island, and not a lot of rain this month (July 2010). We've had two days over 100 degrees, many days in the 90's. We're on course to set records for both the hottest and driest July since they've been keeping records, 1881. My local government has asked people not to wash cars or water lawns, and to carpool if possible.

It's the whole northeast--yes, we'v had the same kind of heat (maybe minus just a few degrees, but it's a negligible difference4), and WE don't have AC in either of our houses. Try getting through this summer without it!

Luckily, though this afternoon, a wicked weather system when through. Right now? We're enjoying low 70's temps for a few hours. It's supposed to go back up overnight, but boy am I feeling refreshed for the moment.

We had greyer and cooler June and July until two weeks ago. Then we had one of our Santa Ana spells for several days. Thank goodness we are back to cool again.

It seems like the past few years we have had much more severe weather, snow storms, flooding, freezes, and heat spells. I am glad we moved to leave winters behind.

As someone else said in another post, it does seem like "The summer from hell." Yesterday when I was putting gas in the car, the temperature at the nearby bank thermometer read 114 degrees.

The weather reports that heat indices (factoring in humidity) put the "feels like" temp at 115.

This morning it was 94 degrees at 8:00 am. I've never ever seen weather like this. Everything that I don't water (from my rain-barrel water) has died. :(

It's that kind of weather that limits your plans you had.

Here in Missouri we have been having temps in the 90's for weeks. We've also been getting several storms per week which keeps my plants and grass alive... but unfortunately hasn't cooled things off any.

We actually had a very mild spring and early summer. Since then it's been up and down, but not overly hot. Still the humidity gets to me so I stay inside when that's high. Yesterday and today it's been in the mid 80's with the humidity in the mid sixties. Not bad at all. We spent the day at the zoo in Omaha yesterday. It was gorgeous.

Right now we are at a cool 91°.

I love summer time, and it rarely gets too hot for me, but this summer has been extremely off the record.

Previous years I rarely ever had the AC on. So far this summer I've probably had it on more than the total of the last 8-10 years.

We have had a few thunderstorms and some rain, but not nearly enough.

I am so grateful to be able to have AC, and heat in the winter, when so many folks don't have either.

Lydia, wish we were getting some of the rain you're getting up your way. I'll watch the radar and it shows rain within 5 mi. of us and then nothing happens, just goes past us without leaving a drop. I'm about 50 mi. north of W. Plains.
DD lives in St. Louis and says they keep getting quite a bit of rain.

Our weather guy said every day but one in July had temps over 90, and last year only one day in July reached 90.It has been unbearable here since May. We don't seem to get a break. Yesterday was another 100 degree day and today reached 95 before the storms came thru, so it's only 70 now but tomorrow right back up to 90. I can't wait till winter. I have some AC units and I'm so afraid they'll fail and all the stores are out of them. I don't think I've ever run the AC continually as I have this year. .

A cool front has passed through southern WI and is headed to the east coast. Relief is on the way. Behind the front, day temps are 70s to low 80 with drier air: Dew point 60 F. No wind to speak of so can not tarry outside because of misquitos - have to keep moving or get eaten.

We've had our share of rain the past 3 days. The problem was the rain clouds were strung over 200 miles and were aligned with the direction of travel. The rain front was not exceptionaly wide. The result was 200 miles of rain clouds passed over the same spot. Menomonee Falls and Milwaukee, WI got flooded. Nicolet High School in Glendale, WI got flooded: 6 to 8 ft or water in the basement and 1.5 ft of water running down the halls on hte first floor. The gym floor went under. They had just gotten in new sports gear for the fall term and it was stored in the basement. Official's preliminary estimate is $1 million to clean and repair. They think that if crews start now and work 7 days a week, the school may be in shape in time to open for the fall term.

And of course by now, you have heard about the Cadillac Escalade swallowed by a sink hole. The vehicle pulled up to a stop light, the street caved in dropping the vehicle into a 15 ft deep hole and to add insult, the stop light also fell and leaned on the car. Its going ot be interesting to see how the insurance companies react to this one. I can hear it now: This was flood damage and your policy does not cover flood.

The real sob story goes to a the owners of 5 to 7 homes on the north side of Milwaukee. Their basements caved in; the city condemed the properties as uninhabitible and has ordered immediate demolition. One woman lamented:
"I bought this house not long ago for $120,000 and have 20 more years of mortage left. I'm loosing my house this week, but the mortage lives on." She'll get nothing from her home owner's insurance because it is flood damage, and most homes in that area do not carry flood damage because they were not in a flood plain and up to now, it was not needed.

A number of cars parked in underground garages were flooded. If the water level got up to the relay box under the hood or the fuse panel under the dash, these will be totaled by the insurance firms.

Yes sireee, the is the second time in 15 years that we got a 100 years rain.

We had a thunderstorm last night, but it didn't cool things off much and it struck a tree four blocks from me and started a massive fire. Everything is so dry.

My point in this post is, in the summertime, we have ups and downs in the temperature - usually. Not this year. We hit 90 degrees in late May and haven't come off of that ever since. And now our temps are staying over 100 during the day and going down to the 90s overnight. When I was out on Saturday, and the thermometers all read 114 degrees (car and banks), I thought I was in a Twilight Zone movie. When it's that hot, you feel like you're baking.

My central air is running non-stop and it can not get the house past 78 degrees.

Last night, we lost power and I swear I heard my a/c say, "Thank goodness."

Anyway - this weather is really crazy and unlike anything I have seen in my 50 years.

It is really hard to cool a house down when the humidity is high.

Don't open your house up at night - it may be tempting if the weather is cooler, but you will let all the humidity back in.

It takes me several days to get the house cool/dry if the windows have been open and the house is humid.

Make sure your air returns are not blocked by furniture or rugs if they are in the floor. You may not have enough air returns if you have an older house. AC and our modern heaters require different things than what was in the houses when they were built.

Make sure your filter is clean. If it is a replaceable filter - put a new one in. My HVAC guy recommends the cheapest filters - but to replace them EVERY month. He says the unit has to work too hard with the expensive filters.

You may want to have your unit checked. It may need new/more refrigerant.

Also make sure you unit outside is CLEAN! I wash mine before the first use and again during the season. Very important!!! Attach a nozzle to your hose to get more power - but don't use a power washer, those are too strong. You need to get all the dirt and debris out of those cooling fins.

When we have weather like yours - and we do every summer...I have to stay ahead of the game to keep it cool in the house. I normally turn up the thermostat at night, but when it gets that hot, I keep it set lower so it can catch up.

I also have insulated shades (honey comb type) that I pull down during the day to keep the heat down. These are great in the winter too to keep the heat in!

In Colorado it's all "normal" as usual here. It's cooler today with temps around 77. Tomorrow around 85, then rain on Wed. which will cool it down again. Sorry it's hot where you are.....

So. CA--we had a long, cool spring, and except for a few days of 100-degree temps, weather has been mild for summer. I'm sure the heat will catch up with us with a vengeance. Sorry for everyone who is suffering with the high temps.

I live about an hour south of Rosemary and she is right.. it's been so hot for so long! At 10PM last night the temp in my backyard was 94.7... at 10PM! LOL Dew point has been as high as 82. Now that's sticky!

We've had a cool front come through today. Currently it is 91 in the shade and 108.7 out in the open, in the sun/clouds. Refreshing! :)

Unlike Rosemary, I don't live in the concrete jungle so it probably feels worse for her. No AC for azzalea? Sheesh!

It's 1 PM on Monday afternoon, and the Temp is 79* with the humidity being in a comfortable zone.

I must say this summer here in MN has been wonderful! Last year was cooler then normal.
The weather usually runs in 7 year cycles. Thankfully we have a really good year now. I love Spring and Fall when we can open windows more. I enjoy a nice breeze going through.

We just leave the AC on and if it is not needed, it doesn't run. We only open windows when the humidity is down.

Thanks for chiming in hayjud. I agree that we Minnesotans are having a very nice summer-like summer! Warm and sunny, but not too many terribly muggy days yet. And so much rain (at least far more than many drought-stricken summers) so that the flowers and gardens are lovely! However, now that it is almost August, I'm ready for that crisp first day of Fall (spoken like a died-in-the-wool Minnesotan!)
