The Kitchen Table

The wildest weather I've ever seen.

Started last night with a tornado in Downtown Atlanta. We have had the tv on all day watching the weather. One tornado warning and/or sighting after the other all over North Georgia. 4 people dead on the west side of the state. My county is under a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch was just canceled. Even the weather people say they have never seen anything like this. They are likening it to a train with one car following another. We are in for a long day and night.

I had plans to run some errands but decided it might be wise to stay home today instead.

Yep, saw that on the news just now.
Better safe than sorry, doing errands.

Will be thinking about you, Linda!

Wildest Okra EVER

I don't know what variety it would be considered now. I *believe* it was Clemson Spineless when I planted it originally, but I don't remember. Might have been Annie Oakley. I can guarantee that it didn't do this the first year it grew. Or last year, that I remember. I wouldn't eat the pods that are there now. They are way too tough. If I would have seen it early on, the smaller ones would have probably been fine, like with normal okra.

I kicked myself after posting because it really is hard to believe unless you have seen birds and other animals interact with each other. I first noticed this type of activity when I looked on a tree by one of my bird feeders and saw dove, dove, small hawk, dove. A What? reaction set in. Living in the part of the midwest I do the most common thing you see is birds suddenly diving for the bushes. On a clear day you will see at least two hawks hunting. On a overcast or rainy day you need to take shelter because you will have a heavy rainstorm with hail or very high wind with driving rain. Watching wildlife and how they interact really helps you learn about peoples interactions. If anyone notices or has additional things that they have heard of I for one would be happy to hear of them.

This is timely. I just this weekend found out the possible reason for one of my friend's unusual name. He only had an initial for a first name, *H*. It was on his drivers license. I caused him grief when he had to fill out forms with his name because they would always hand the form back to him and bark "We need your full name filled in!" and he would have to produce his ID and they would get confused and insist he had a "real name". I had always assumed that his parents did not name him at the hospital and the hospital put in an initial because he had such a common last name and then the parents never got around to having a name put in on the certificate. I found at at his funeral that his middle name was "Rap". At first I thought it was a nickname he acquired because he did always break into 'rap' sometimes and it drove everybody nuts and sometimes people would tell him to 'knock it off', especially when he made the real LOUD popping sounds as part of it. It hurt the ears. But that was his real name. I never thought the word 'rap' was part of the American lexicon back in the sixties and wondered how that came to be his name way back then. This past weekend his name came up in conversation and someone told me he had been named after a famous Black Panther in the '60s. I looked it up and it looks like he probably was named after H Rap Brown. H Rap Brown is famous for his quote "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down". He is currently serving a life sentence for homicide. Not quite as bad as naming someone Adolph Hitler. Here is a link that might be useful: H Rap Brown

The earliest spring I've ever seen--I'm 71.

Here in central Missouri, I picked my first asparagus 3 weeks weeks ago. Since then I have had to pull back the mulch and reapply it between each harvest because we have had a few nights get below freezing which turns any exposed sprouts to mush. Last night I saw a few poking up thru the leaf mulch so I will be picking some tonight. I really like the blanched white asparagus that grows beneath the mulch. I have 50 crowns (25 Purple Passion and 25 Pacific Purple) being shipped to me from Nourse Farms next Monday for a new bed. I have a vacation day scheduled next Friday to plant them. They recommend planting the purple asparagus types with 8" spacing rather that the 12" for the Jersey types. As soon as I get the new Gus planted I will be heading into the woods to hunt for a couple of my favorite spring treats...RAMPS AND MOREL MUSHROOMS!!!!!!!!!!

I'm northwest of Atlanta. Though our county was under tornado watches off and on all day, and there were tornados within our county, our town dodged the bullet. Here at home we didn't even get hail. It was spotty. The sirens screamed all day, which had the younger kids upset. It has been frightening, even for someone who loves storms. It's just been too much. The folks in downtown Atlanta just got hit over and over last night and today. It's a lot to recover from, for the city, businesses, and individuals.

But I did get a laugh out of the local meteorolgist. He used the word "tremendous" about once/minute. I am not exaggerating. It got distracting and had DH and I spewing our drinks. I felt bad laughing at such a serious moment, but I just couldn't help it! I'm sure we're not the only ones who noticed. Those guys get so excited, you can see their passion for meteorology as they report. As long as you're the safe one, it's fascinating to see the technology and learn something from the coverage.
