coffee grinders...

I remember quite a discussion here a while back on Coffee Grinders... it's where I learned Burr v. Blade... But I can't find it... so it might mean it's time to have a Coffee Grinder discussion again... At least it is for me, b/c my Braun Blade grinder died, and I need to know what to ask for for Christmas...

So, What's your favorite? why?

And what would you recommend for a seldom-drink-coffee-at-home, decaf-only girl, who very occasionally makes regular coffee for guests or DH... Auto Drip and/or French Press... oh! I also have a cappuccino maker that gets pulled out of the closet about once every 3 years or so...

I have a Cuisinart burr grinder from Sam's Club. It's only $29 and is not anywhere near top of the line, but we are not coffee perfectionists, just like freshly ground beans and this works great for us.

I just use my Blender and screen out the Beans that didn't make it. Then redoo them.
Works for me and only takes a couple of minutes, to do a pound.
My coffe maker uses a paper filter, so it doesn't matter if some is fine.

I disagree about Solis not having an advantage over Delongi. We use to have a DeLongi and ran too high speed which heated the ground beans and they had a lot of static so they would fly around when you tried to spoon them out - messy. The slower rotation of the Solis is better for retaining flavor and not producing static charge on the ground beans. We use our grinder for expresso (fine) grind. If using a coarser setting, the static might be less of a problem but there still would be the flavor advantage of not over heating the beans. If you want to go a bit cheaper, the Maestro is $50 less than the Maestro Plus. Our Maestro has lasted longer than our DeLongi so for a house where the grinder is used every day that offsets some of the extra cost.

DH just did this sunday past. He pulled out the spice grinder wanting to make expresso... (i over roasted a small batch of beans. I set the timer but went out front with the pups and forgot, haha) Just enough to get some nice black oily beans. I just said smell it. Do you really want your expresso to smell like, um, a barnyard? So he dug out the old burr grinder. -Our main grinder is calibrated to our everyday grind and complicated to change it. I just use rice between spices and grains. Activated charcoal is a good idea. I have some in capsule form from the health food store. I just have it handy for emergencies...spider bites, snake bites etc. I do use fine ground coffee in some spice mixes so it would not bother me much. Rice works enough for me.

I have just about every knife imaginable. When I do squash, I wash it first, then microwave it for a minute or two, depending on the size. Cuts SO much easier. I've used my Wusthoff cleaver, my 8" Wusthoff chef's knife, a chinese cleaver and even resorted to DH bringing in the wood-mallet thingie. Microwaving makes it MUCH easier. I have the Solis Maestro burr grinder. I guess after 10+ years, they are discontinuing it and the newer version will be the Baratza. I spent about $130-50 (can't recall now) for it but it has been a JOY to use. I too am the only coffee drinker in my house. I have every gadget for coffee and tea. Love this thing. I guess these days, anything that lasts 10 years is considered golden, IMHO.

Jeaninwa, I totally agree with you. But sometimes "they" just have us over a barrel. I probably would never have made that purchase if I hadn't had that gift card, but now that I have the item, if it ever needed to be replaced, I would look for the exact same item again. Kind of off topic, but DH and I like REALLY strong coffee and had trouble brewing it to our liking until I discovered that the beans alone did not make all the difference. I also make a very strong pot of coffee at work, but we start with already ground coffee, not beans. Yet the coffee tasted better than what I made at home. I decided that the pot made the difference and I was right. We have a DeLonghi Esclusivo at work that sprays tiny amounts of heated water at regular intervals, allowing the water to soak the grounds before actually starting to drip into the pot. I bought the exact same coffee maker for home (and paid way more than I wanted to) and IMHO, I now make the best coffee in the universe, LOL. And if it dies, I will search for that very same pot again!

Biz, I'm using a 15 year old Krups blade grinder. I grind coffee fresh daily, about one pot's worth, and it works really well. They are about $20, I think they were $15 when I got mine years ago.

I'm enough of a coffee hound that I drink coffee every day, I want fresh beans, medium roast and I want them ground freshly every day. I'm not spending a lot of money to grind one pot's worth of beans daily, though.

Coffeemakers? At work I have a Hamilton Beach with a carafe, so the coffee doesn't "cook" all day. At home I have a Gevalia that I got free when I bought coffee, then I cancelled the membership, LOL. I also have a nice little one cup french press that I use on work mornings because I make coffee when I get to work.

Bizzo, Here is the thread that you were looking for. I love my burr grinder. It grinds evenly for every need. And I only grind enough for one pot at a time.

My Salton is well over 25 yrs. old now and keeps on grinding. Bet they don't even make that brand anymore. I used a Black & Decker this weekend, but it ground too fine, IMO.

I had a Hamilton Beach blade coffee grinder and it was very good. When it died after 2 years of use I replaced it with a Proctor Silex, also a blade grinder, but this one is not anywhere near as good as the old one. The Hamilton Beach could grind flax seeds and rice into very fine powder. This Proctor Silex can only grind them into coarse texture like cornmeal. I went back to look for the same model but they must have stopped making it. Couldn't find it anywhere. I can't wait for this one to die so I can buy a new one.

I've got a Krups burr grinder, must be ten years old or so, now that I think of it. For coffee making, I'd recommend a French press. Very fast, doesn't take up much room so easy to store and easy to clean.

Everyone, thanks! I tried my cusinart, but wasn't very successful, so at least I can use my blender until I get the grinder...

I think I'm going to print both (this one and that one) and give them to my husband and let him surprise me :-)

I didn't realize that I was the one who started the other post LOL!!! So my grinder has been dead for... 10 months!!! guess I don't go through coffee at home much, huh? I found some ground coffee I've used a few times I've worked from home.

Driving me this time is that my sister-in-law is staying with me for Thanksgiving, and she is a BIG coffee drinker, and likes her grind fresh... so DH was going to get me early christmas present... for his sister :-)

Just remember that if you decide to go with a French Press, you'll need a burr grinder so you can do an evenly ground very coarse grind. Otherwise, your guests are likely to be sifting coffee grounds through their teeth. :)
