How to get smell out of coffee grinder

My DD and DH decided to grind up whole cloves in my coffee bean grinder. Then, I didn't find it for several days, and it still had cloves in it. :( I've had baking soda in it for a couple days but it still smells of clove.......which isn't really what I want to smell in my coffee. Any ideas?

try grinding uncooked rice in it

Rice is generally the way to clean and deodorize a coffee grinder, as coolbeans pointed out; and if there is still some odor, place a folded paper towel in the grinder and renew it after a few days if it smells. You can also try a charcoal briquette on top of the paper towel.

Now you know why you need two coffee/spice mills if you do coffee beans and spices/seeds/grains.

I've encountered that particularly smelly pvc packaging and have yet to find a solution. Washing seems to set the smell. These days I try to check first and won't buy anything if the packaging seems very smelly. The smell from pvc is from the plasticisers and some of them are toxic and are being phased out. I commented on the problem to a saleswoman in a manchester store once and she said she airs her sheets before washing to get rid of the plastic smell. I would not put new items in the dryer, especially on hot, that would just spread whatever is in the new items around the dryer (don't forget they also have chemicals in them to protect them during handling and storage prior to being bought). In one of my experiences (before I knew about airing first) I washed the inner sheet and pillowcase first and had no trouble, then washed the outer sheet which had been touching the packaging and it reeked. I had them all hanging on the line outside for days and not only did the smell not come out of the one sheet but it spread to the other sheet where they were flapping against each other. I haven't had the time to persevere with those sheets so I'm sorry I can't tell you what works, especially after the item has already been washed. I'd be inclined to return them and tell the manufacturer why. In an era when we are becoming more aware of the problems of plastics it is ridiculous that manufacturers are still using smelly pvc which contaminates the contents and then ends up in landfill instead of the safer types of pvc or better yet the biodegradable/recyclable alternatives like cornstarch based plastic or good oldfashioned cellophane or cardboard.

How to get the shampoo smell out of a chair?

Hey all, I bought an office chair from Craigslist and decided to clean it. The cushions are covered in fabric, not leather. I bought a can of carpet/upholstery cleaner at Walgreens (I know, probably a big mistake), the kind with the brush on top. I rubbed a lot of the shampoo into the cushions, scrubbed it, and then wiped it off with a damp towel. It cleaned the cushions just fine. The only problem is that now the chair stinks of shampoo. It smells like dog shampoo. Yuck! Even worse, it makes my clothes smell like the shampoo. So sad! I've tried washing the cushions with club soda. Had limited success with this, but the chair still smells! Is there any way I can get this smell out of the chair? Will it go away on its own? Or is the situation hopeless? I'm a vintage dealer, primarily 30s-early 60s clothing (when smoking was considered glamorous,) so I deal with this all the time. White vinegar is your best bet but start with Dawn, well diluted first. Get your qtips out and get in all those nooks and crannies. Test a tiny hidden spot first, of course. Dilute if necessary and repeat as necessary. Options are sunlight (for the ozone,) or actual ozone treatments (often offered by furriers.) Do NOT use febreeze (which only makes it smell like smoke and febreeze.) Newspaper, baking soda and kitty litter really aren't all that effective (as someone mentioned, until you break down that sticky nicotine coating the smell will always return.) Best of luck! I just bought a Mr Coffee grinder....perfect size for travel (slightly smaller than a quart of milk), and it has 3 grinding selections . coarse/medium and fine. Under $20. at Walmart Works great.

Try grinding a few saltine crackers, crumbled, in it, then wipe it out with a barely damp paper towel.

Thanks for the suggestions. I DO have a spice grinder, but my daughter and husband didn't think of that.
I'll try those suggestions.

There are not too many ways to get rid of smell.

You can absorb it to remove it, or you can neutralize it.

There are not too many materials which can actually absorb, activated charcoal being one of them. Activated charcoal is so effective that it is use in poison gas masks.

I suppose you can go to a pet store which sells tropical fish to buy activated charcoal. Leave the charcoal in the grinder for a few days.

Most material are either acidic or alkaline, so you can try pouring hot baking soda solution first then hot vinegar to try to neutralize the offending smell.

DH just did this sunday past. He pulled out the spice grinder wanting to make expresso...
(i over roasted a small batch of beans. I set the timer but went out front with the pups and forgot, haha) Just enough to get some nice black oily beans. I just said smell it. Do you really want your expresso to smell like, um, a barnyard?
So he dug out the old burr grinder. -Our main grinder is calibrated to our everyday grind and complicated to change it.

I just use rice between spices and grains. Activated charcoal is a good idea. I have some in capsule form from the health food store. I just have it handy for emergencies...spider bites, snake bites etc.

I do use fine ground coffee in some spice mixes so it would not bother me much. Rice works enough for me.

I'd make a slurry of water and baking soda and whiz it around, or else try whizzing some parsley in it. Lemon peel would also work.
