Help me resuscitate my bedroom decor!

We painted the entire house (a 50s prairie-influenced ranch) in SW Vanillin before we moved in. Since then, we've repainted the public rooms in warm earthy tones (Masada, Kona, Anjou Pear) from BM's Affinity line.

Now it's time to personalize the bedrooms. Here's the master:

The quilt will stay, but I'm open to suggestions for wall color(s) and window treatments (currently have bamboo roman shades). The floor is cork. I'm thinking a grey-beige tone, but I keep looking at the gold in the quilt and wondering if we can do something with that?

Purple seems to be "in" right now. How about painting your trim the purple from your quilt?

With that pop of color you'd probably want a very pale color from your floor for the walls. Your wooden furniture blends nicely with your floor.

Then have some purple and black accessories to tie everything together.

I'd really prefer a medium-dark color. The room is very bright, and I like the contrast of dark wall/white trim.

Anyone else?

I think pink can be part of a sophisticated color scheme. Grey and pink and a touch of black and a bit of sparkling silver can come across as very grown-up, not little girly. So I think grey walls would be a good place to start. You will need to have a couple of touches of pink somewhere else in the room so that the carpet doesn't stand out as the only pink thing in the room. A pillow on the bed. A bit of pink in a patterned curtain. Your lamps. A throw. That way, the pink looks intentional and not as if you were stuck with carpet that you are trying to ignore. Some black would help to ground the room. A black nightstand or throw or picture frame or lamp or vase. Something silver and sparkling, like a mirrored nightstand or silver lamp or mirror or candlestick, to add light and sparkle. They sell all sorts of glass shades that would create a less girly look that the ruffled shades you have now on the ceiling fixture. Some are frosted glass that would help to hide the light bulbs a bit. There are also small bulbs that would be less noticeable. Adding drawer knobs to the dresser might help update it a bit. It can also be painted--you could try black or a silver leaf finish. The lamps could also be painted if you don't like the color, or they could be stenciled or otherwise decorated. Check out the Apartment Therapy website for a lot of tutorials on how to DIY changes like that. Also, look at how the furniture is arranged. Can you create a more adult room by adding a reading chair, side table and floor lamp? Putting the dresser into a closet so that the room looks more like a studio apartment than a bedroom? You should think about what would make this room a sanctuary for you, a place to rest and recharge. A chaise lounge? A recliner? A beautiful piece of artwork? Plan on one "splurge" item that will give you peace and joy at the end of the day. I'd paint the walls and then take your time finding things for the rest of the room, your accessories and window treatments. It could be a fun hunt for just the right thing, and a nice break from care-giving. I've attached one of my favorite inspiration photos. This is from my "How I'm going to live when I retire" wish list. This is a pink room that is far from little-girly. You can see how she took a somewhat bland beige carpet and incorporated it into a pink color scheme with some personal flair and sophistication.

Too many pillows on the bed, and I'm afraid the room looks rather cold. I would add another color, perhaps yellow, to warm up the room, and pale yellow curtains with gray walls would look great, and change some of the pillows to that color. The TV looks lonely, I would put a long, narrow console under it and find a way to attach the cord behind the TV. You could put large candle holders with yellow candles on the console, but don't crowd it with too much "stuff" otherwise. I wouldn't paint the wall too deep a gray, make it a warm middle tone so the room looks cozy.

Update now that curtains are hung. I LOVE being able to have some natural light while maintaining some privacy. I couldn’t order that chandelier earlier because I was heading out of town, and then the price jumped. So I’ve got my eye on it and I’ll snag it as soon as the price goes down again. I also am looking for the right duvet cover. Had held off on ordering because I was going out of town, but yesterday I found this creamy one with arrows on it. Kind of cute. Will either go this route or a solid white. The grey paint is looking more and more drab. Someone made the suggestion that a crisper white will help make the other colors pop. Something to think about I guess.

For a MCM or Prairie style home the white/vanilla walls work. The room looks rather on the smaller side and white will make it seem much more roomy. Since the quilt must stay I would add a couple of white/ivory decorative ones. Replace the little lamp with a larger one with a clear colored glass base. Keep the wall art simple of course.

I am thinking that a new furniture arrangement for the room would really bring out the beauty of those windows with the nice view. Are there more photos of the other angles in the room?

I would keep the idea of simple Roman shades but the natural looking bamboo does not sound like it is the best choice for your modern furniture and bold colored quilt. Maybe go with white/ivory. Since the room looks to be higher up in elevation and surrounded by greenery maybe a translucent white Roman shade could work if privacy is not a big issue.

The room is approx. 11' x 12', has (SW) corner windows and a small attached bath, which is tiled in the original 50s grey/burgundy. I think the vanillin is too yellow (a) for my liking, (b) for the quilt that my MIL kindly made for us and (c) to tie into the bathroom color scheme. The bed frame will stay. The cherry dresser, bookcase & nightstand--while I love them--were not purchased for that bed and do not work with it. I hope to replace them with more simply styled furniture. The blinds are a problem from the exterior viewpoint also, and will either be lined in an off-white or replaced entirely with sheers or some other off-white treatment. We took out the old white mini blinds and prefer not to go that route again (the cats loved bending them).

I'm viewing the quilt as my fall/winter bedcover, and would love to get new, lighter coverings for spring/summer. I need help in identifying a wall color that could work with that quilt, contrast/coordinate nicely with the bed, and provide a nice backdrop for new white/patterned bedcoverings.

Just to complicate matters :-) we may move to an adjacent room that is longer but also has a (SE) corner window set up. I'd love to discuss layout, but the color issue is most pressing right now.

Because of the size of the room, I wouldn't go dark. What about a Lavender color? Love those windows! Lucky girl!
