Uhoh...animal allergy symptoms?

I know the typical ones, the itchy eyes, the sniffles, etc. But what about hives and nothing else? My toddler has just one patch of hives...and the dog has been with us two days. Due to the weather, he hasn't been outside getting into everything, and due to the puppy, we haven't been going anywhere new. I have to be careful with this kid's allergies so if there's possibly a problem I need to return the dog before the reaction gets worse and before we get even more attached (awww he peed on demand today!). (The dog not the kid.)

I'm not worried about the dog--he adjusted to us quickly and the shelter had several families that wanted him. And we haven't used up his cute.

Anyway, can a rash be a dog allergy? Thanks!

There are some extremely dangerous canine GI parasites that can cause skin lesions especially in children. While not common, DEFINITELY get both the dog checked out (hookworm) and the child checked out ASAP!

skin hives with no other allergy symptoms is a sign of contact dermatitis, which shows as a rash or hives the area has come into contact with. That may be the dog, or could even be from the shampoo or something else on the dog, or something totally different but it will be something that has contacted the area and it can take a bit of detective work because a toddler may not be able to tell you what made them itchy before the hives even came up. I think it's more likely your toddler would have an allergy reaction than contact dermatitis to a dog. I'm allergic to some types of dog hair but it's usually an allergic reaction not a skin reaction.

I'm with Oakley - I don't think its that rare either. I think its something that isn't widely talked about because one might think its contagious. I've never been one to share drinks or lip gloss or whatever, but I do make sure that if my mouth is broken out, I keep my drinks away where my Grandson can't reach it. His parents share drinks with him so he just assumes others will. So many things pop up when you go through menopause, like the Frozen Shoulders I mentioned before. I had a total hysterectomy when I was 36 but stayed on HRT until 10 years ago - a couple years later, these strange things started happening. I know this sounds - weird - but I had to have a tooth pulled a couple years ago and this oral surgeon mentioned that he had read an article about something similiar and it was thought that the constant irritation could be brought about when a person has alot of metal in the mouth from fillings and crowns(gold). There could be a small electrical current going on which would keep the lining of the mouth sensitive, especially if the body chemistry is off - I think he said low potassium, magnesium, and perhaps zinc. I have several gold crowns, and a gold bridge, plus old fillings that contained some metal. I know at one time when I was having issues, my potassium level was low and the doctor started me on a supplement. I still take it daily. Let us know how the allergy tests go - no fun there.

Some trees and shrubs always are in bloom in January and in a mild winter can start in December. Elms, maples, and willows have family members that drop lots of pollen at this time of the year. Depending where you are some honeysuckles, witchhazels etc are also blooming. Watch which trees the squirrels seem to be spending their time in. We used to have what is commonly called slippery elm that the squirrels killed because there was no food and they ate the buds and large portions of the bark. I have had various seasonal allergies all year. This winter started last week of November.

I understand how unusual this seems Bluebell. Could not believe it when it happened to my hubby. One day he called me (I raced home) to tell me he was beet red, his heart was racing and he had welts all over his body. The only thing he did was take Ibruprofen just like he did the week before. Gave him Benadryl and he improved. Then he decided one day to take and aspirin because he forgot my warning. That time I almost called 911 as he had the same symptoms but worse with his throat feeling like it was closing up. A double dose of Benadryl kept him out of ER that day. He now understands but I still get so worried he may make another mistake like that. So I am warning you because the worst case scenario for you is that you will take an NSAID and have an anaphylactic reaction in which your airway will close. An allergy can jump in severity just like that.

Thanks all. It was pretty strange--he just woke up with a patch of hives on his side where he hadn't been touching the dog (probably!). The type of hives he sometimes gets with a virus that pops up and down and moves around. These went away quickly and didn't show up elsewhere. That night his sister came down with a high fever which is what SHE does when she gets a cold so I'm pretty sure that was it.

The dog was screened for stuff but we'll have him rechecked very soon. Thanks!

FYI - my friends kid used to get itchy eyes and an itchy nose whenever we picked her up in the van from school or she came over for any length of time (3 dogs) as soon as she started to rub her face we gave her a benadryl....within a year she had developed an immunity to the dogs and now has 2 of her own. The body is a remarkable thing and often one can work with mild allergies other than giving back pets. Especially given that pets can help booster immune systems in the long run. Hope everyone is okay. Good luck

Ahhhh I think I'll wait until my kid is old enough to use a rescue inhaler before I play chicken with allergies. My family has a history of anaphylaxis so I need to be a little careful.

Anyway, he's not having an allergic reaction so I think we're fine.
