SOS - Really dumb fresh-killed turkey question

On Sunday, I picked up a fresh-killed, brined turkey from a very reputable local quail/turkey farm. I'm actually cooking it today for DH and me (spending tomorrow with friends). It's been stored in the fridge and when I just took it out, I noticed it has a very strong smell. Not necessarily like it's bad, just much different from what I'm used to with store-bought birds. I don't remember store birds even having a smell.

I called the farm and they explained that I'm probably smelling blood (there was some pooled in the pan it came in) because they don't use a "diaper" to absorb it like the stores. I have to say, it's a beautiful turkey.

I feel really silly asking, but is it normal for this type of turkey to have a strong smell? The farm is about an hour from me, but they deliver to various drop-off points through the week. There were lots of people there picking up turkeys on the same day, so it's not like I'm the only one who was storing it for a few days in the fridge.
