Crown molding bleeding & grey - pics & need advice

Hi Paint gurus

We had crown molding installed in several areas of our home about 1.5yrs ago - I noticed soon thereafter "greying" then bleeding of much of newly installed crown. I called painter back he said he would re-do

Ok fast foward he is finally coming to fix this - The crown did come pre-primed & I'm really not certain that he primed over that - he was using zinzer 1,2,3 in other areas so perhaps he did - BM Oil based White Dove was used as final coat

I know you can see the bleeding in the pics but don't know if the greying shows up - it really looks as if there is a layer of dirt/dust on the concave portion of the crown a shadowing if you will

My ? is how to properly fix this?

Is the stuff that comes primed real wood? I know i've used that type in different mouldings, and didn't have a problem. I think it was MDF so the paint took evenly.

It may not be a problem with the painting itself, but with the material the crown is made of, especially if it's only in certain areas. Some of the 'faux woods' don't take to paint as easily as you might think.

I can't see any graying on my monitor

I had an area that looked exactly like that on some (wood) crown molding. Even the exact pattern. Reason being, I forgot to prime it. Have him prime it and repaint.

Mava, Do you have pics of the different mouldings? We are in a similar position. We originally were going to stain the crown molding ourselves, but long story short, the kitchen company had a carpenter do the cabinet mouldings for us. Just for expediency's sake, we have installed that. Still haven't picked crown moulding for the rest of the house, but am sure it will be bigger at least. But the cabinet CM is stained maple, and the house CM will be painted white- so I think it's going to be OK. I'm treating the cabinet like it's furniture.

When I was starting our DIY kitchen remodel, I decided to get a compound miter saw. After researching it I got a Hitachi 10" sliding compound miter saw. One thing I learned is that some people feel that for doing detailed work, a 10" is better than a 12", since the 12" blade can wobbly slightly. One thing that definitely makes CMS's more suited to the task is since they are more portable, you can set them up right near where the task is, rather walking down to the shop and back upstairs for each successive cut. Also I am prejudiced against radial arm saws since my high school shop teacher would frequently and loudly state: "Radial Arm Saws are only good for one thing: sawing off your own arm, that's why they call them radial arm saws."

A couple of solutions would appeal to me, and we like the combination of a traditional touch with clean contemporary: 1) since the opening has a corner trim on each side of the entryway: u could transition to a narrow crown molding. Looking at the wall with the windows etc, i think it needs something at the ceiling and it need not be the same width but of similar style to blend. By having it narrow, it could continue around upper cabs since these seem to be flush to ceiling (?) I would be inclined to paint the narrow trim at the cab tops to match the crown molding. 2) having either a picture rail type molding across the windows and connecting them might be a workable alternate to tie in the other space 3) Most definitely i have a problem with how the molding terminates short of (away from) the entryway. It could have gone to the actual corner or even overlap that corner casing that appears to be 1 3/4 - 2" wide. Is the flat wider piece that is flush up against the non-kitchen ceiling part of the crown molding (is it integral to it?) If so it should extend to the opening or perhaps continue as a "ceiling framing" in the kitchen...sort of mimic a little soffett. Good luck

Thanks Chas ... I need posts like this. Take a breath, get off the ladder ... stand back and say does it really matter .... ?? LOL. Thank you! I like your idea, can handle a dremel, chisel and putty knife. Good call on slipping a blade between the brick and anything loose ... I would have just nicked away at it and scored the brick as you have noted. I will try that on the bigger chunks and those especially that are in the mortar grooves. If I can get a relatively "straight" line of caulk/paint ... even to the eye from far away ... I'll be happy. Thanks for the comment on the nice job ... painting today. Used oil as a primer so this should go smooooothly. I'll post a pic when done. Tx. again.

IT's real wood - I was thinking need prime and top coats
He will have to use an oil based primer now since it is going over oil top coat - correct?
any need for stain kill first?

Yeah oil based paints/primers won't kill those stains obviously. You need to use BIN, which is a primer/sealer made by Zinsser and is shellac based. The factory primer is water based garbage that isn't going to hold out any future stains that pop up.

Hi there,

My husband and I had the same exact thing happen when we painted the trim on our barn. We were going crazy --> we would prime, paint...then the stains would appear again...prime, paint...then the stains would appear again.

Long story short, we learned it was the tannin in the wood. We finally used BIN primer under the paint. Finally! No more bleeding.

Like paintguy said, use BIN. We use this on ALL our woodwork now. No more worrying about those blotches. BIN is super stinky and runny in comparison to regular primer. It took some getting used to...but it is worth it.
