need advice on crown molding

Our cabinets are being delivered and installed this week. We ordered crown molding to go over the 2 upper cabinets, range hood and refrigerator cab. This accounts for about 1/4 of the total kitchen. The remainder will have crown molding to match the rest of our house. The cabinet crown molding and the house crown are very different. My contractor kept asking me how I saw this going together and I told him not to worry it will all work out. Now that I see the room, I am questioning if I made a big mistake. I would appreciate any suggestions and or pictures on how anyone handled this.

i should mention the ceilings are 8 feet and the cabinets go up to the ceiling.

Do you have pics of the different mouldings?

We are in a similar position.

We originally were going to stain the crown molding ourselves, but long story short, the kitchen company had a carpenter do the cabinet mouldings for us. Just for expediency's sake, we have installed that. Still haven't picked crown moulding for the rest of the house, but am sure it will be bigger at least. But the cabinet CM is stained maple, and the house CM will be painted white- so I think it's going to be OK. I'm treating the cabinet like it's furniture.

I have very large crown molding in the entire house. My cabinets have been installed leaving room at the top for the finish carpenter to put matching molding up as soon as the cabinets are completely installed. There are 4 places where the cabinet molding will butt up to the already installed crown molding. I could not figure out a way to marry the usual smaller molding to what I already had without it looking odd.

Sand with 3M medium grit sanding blocks, then prime and paint it. You probably don't need to use oil based primer, but if there is any bleeding of stains through the latex primer, I would use BIN on those. Topcoat with a high quality acrylic paint in satin or semi and you are done. It may take up to 3 topcoats to cover if the stain was dark. After the primer coat, you will want to caulk both gaps that should be tooled down with a wet finger and let that dry before painting over it.

A couple of solutions would appeal to me, and we like the combination of a traditional touch with clean contemporary: 1) since the opening has a corner trim on each side of the entryway: u could transition to a narrow crown molding. Looking at the wall with the windows etc, i think it needs something at the ceiling and it need not be the same width but of similar style to blend. By having it narrow, it could continue around upper cabs since these seem to be flush to ceiling (?) I would be inclined to paint the narrow trim at the cab tops to match the crown molding. 2) having either a picture rail type molding across the windows and connecting them might be a workable alternate to tie in the other space 3) Most definitely i have a problem with how the molding terminates short of (away from) the entryway. It could have gone to the actual corner or even overlap that corner casing that appears to be 1 3/4 - 2" wide. Is the flat wider piece that is flush up against the non-kitchen ceiling part of the crown molding (is it integral to it?) If so it should extend to the opening or perhaps continue as a "ceiling framing" in the kitchen...sort of mimic a little soffett. Good luck

Curved crown molding - need advice.

It would be easier to mold it in place in plaster than to make a curved wood crown moulding. There are two ways I know of to go about it. You can either cut the curve in solid wood and make the molding on a shaper, or buy already-made molding and cut it apart into bands in the plane that you want it to bend. Since the saw blade removes a thickness of material as dust, you need to cut the leaves of molding-veneer from two pieces of stock, making up for the wasteage. Then the molding-leaves are reassembled with glue over a caul (form) of the desired radius. When dry, the excess glue is scraped off, and the molding cleaned up for use. Plenty of chisel and gouge work will be necessary to blend your bent molding into the straight stock. The advantage of this laminated bend it that the grain is consistent throughout, unlike a curved molding run from a bandsawed blank. A laminated blank molded on a shaper is actually best, provided you have a shaper. Flex-trim will make you just about anything you want- I know they do crown molding to go around, say, a column, so they'd probably be happy to do a vertical-plane curve. The choice you make will be dependent on whether it must be stain-grade, paint grade, or the machinery and time available. Casey

Houses in PNW rarely have crown molding. Even 1-2 , 5 min dollars, brand new or old rarely have crown moulding. I love it, so my husband made me a gift. We bought crown moulding from local yard- 65ea 16 ft pieces , it was a little bit over a dollar per linear feet for material. Than you need good tools, some experience and patience. 2k and 2 mo later it was done. I love it! There are certain tricks, but you can find online very good tutorials. Again I’ve seen houses on east cost , good mill work and a lot more fine details. Not really important at my area for a lot a people but it looks nice, so approx 1 dollar per linear feet can get you nice upgrade.

Thanks for the replies.

raehelen - I don't have pictures of the cabinet molding yet. It will be delivered this week. Our cabinets are painted white and all of the moldings in our house are white also. With stained cabinets what you are doing makes sense and will look nice.

bbstx - Are you using the house moldings over the cabinets instead of molding from the cabinet company? I thought about doing that but I don't know if I can match the whites exactly.

I also have 8 foot ceilings and the cabinets will go up to the ceiling. I purchased extra CM from the cabinet company to continue around the rest of the room. I had my contractor take down the CM that was already around the room and move it into the master bedroom.
