Rob, It is no secret around here that I dislike salads.

Care and maintenance of a wooden salad bowl is the same as caring for a wooden cutting board. Wash with hot soapy water, rinse and dry well. Oil occasionally with a food grade oil. The cheapest and easiest to acquire is mineral oil. Carried by most drug stores. 100% Tung oil is also recommended. And one of my favourites is Clapham's Beeswax salad bowl finish.

Just make sure that you don't use vegetable or olive oil as they will go rancid.

If your bowl/board has picked up odors use the cut side of a lemon with either salt or baking soda and rub it all over the surface. Wash, rinse and dry well and oil.

NEVER put your wooden bowls or cuttings boards in the dishwasher.

I love salads.....think of it as a carrier for lovely cheeses, bits of bread and a lovely piquant sauce to hold it all together!!
And I always use a wooden bowl to mix and serve.
I just wipe out the bowl with a soapy cloth, rinse and dry immediatly.
I have had bowls that had gotten really sticky...those I used mineral spirits on to remove the polymerized oil....and then went back to my usual way.
I have a picture of a couple of stacks of mine....but Photobucket seems to be down.

Rob:
If you have a Bowl that needs to be refinished, wipe it out good with Rubbing Alcohol.
You can sand the inside with Meduim sandpaper,working your way down to Fine.

Sanding with the Grain, if possible. If it is sanded across the grain it will show scratches.

According to how much refinishing has to be done, determines,which Sandpaper to start with,
Meduim or Fine.

I work my way down to 0000 Steel Wool, to Polish it.

Then it should be rubbed with Alcohol on a Cloth again, to remove any fine Steel Wool.
Then Oil it as Ann said.

An Old Bowl can be made beautiful again, with little effort.
Just do it whenever you have a few minutes here and there.

I decided I felt silly whenever I'd order in a restaurant and they say, what kind of dressing and I say, no salad. And they'd look at me like I had a third eye growing out of my forehead, so I started ordering it with whatever the "house dressing" was, and I actually learned to tolerate salad. It became an adventure. I've found myself craving salad every once in a while now, so I figure, knock one calorie-laden meal off the menu every week and replace it with a salad. Mostly, I thought, if I make everything better than restaurants, why not salad too? I've seen some pretty good ones here (and thought, I sure would like to taste that!), and well, Linda, your dressings seems like even I could do them; they are definitely well thought of. So why not!

But I sure hear ya Ann. I hear ya. I do know I will not eat iceburg lettuce (it is the only food I have ever found that disagrees with me) salads. That was the biggest part of the problem. I do like salads made with romaine or spinach and that's my starting point.

Rob, my thought on salads is that salads fill up space that I could be filling up with something that I would enjoy much better.

I make really good salads. I've never used store bought dressings. Even Matthew was taught at an early age how to make his own dressing. (He is like Moe and loves salads). I will eat salads, I just don't particularly enjoy them. And I would never order a salad as a main course. I love vegetables but want them cooked.

I forgot to mention above, but if you have quality wooden spoons you should treat them the same way you would your boards and bowls.

I don't eat many Salads but when I do,I make it interesting.

Everything I can find goes into it.

Pieces of all kinds of Cheese, Sharp Provolone, Cheddar,
Feta, Pepperoni, Ham, Roast Chicken, etc.
A Smorgasborg Salad !!!!! With Tomato's
Then I'll sprinkle on EVOO, Italian Dressing, Parmesan and Tomato Juice,
For dipping Garlic Bread. Whoooeeeeeee!!!!!

funny...I had a craving for a wedge of iceberg lettuce with a sort or 1000 island dressing ( without the egg)...I will pick up some for dinner!
