Luv's fall decor #2
Comments (10)OMGosh, where do I start.... The little wood pilgrims you made are adorable, and that turkey with them is soooo cute. I like the simplicity. But then there are your other turkeys! The handled one really grabbed my attention!!! Lynn's decorated cornucopia, and that super sweet bunny, must have had you feeling like it was Christmas already!! What a great friend she is to do something so special. The acorn mugs from Betty are wonderful. I sure wish she would come back here. I think of her (and Alfred) so often and hope they are doing okay. Such a special couple and they deserve the best. I sure hope DH doesn't start counting your acorns! LOL. You've got quite a collection going, Scrat! hugs, Karen...See MoreBreaking stoneware plates...have you ever???
Comments (11)Are you saying the ceramic shards fell apart or the shards fell off the surface of what you are mosaicing? I see you are in North Carolina, do you take your mosaiced work in for the winter? Freezing and thawing is not healthy for mosaics, the shards or grout can have trapped moisture and as that moisture freezes it expands, cracking the material as it is freezing and then when it thaws it turns back into water and flows away taking some of the materials with it(this is how mountains turn into silt). Now if the shards are merely falling off the surface, what are you using to adhere your shards to the birdbath? What is the birdbath made of? And again do you take the work inside during the winter? I don't need to worry about what I leave out in the winter since I am in florida my stones are made from what ever plates I happen upon. I'm not picky about the type of plate(terra cotta, earthenware, stoneware, or porcelain) but I am picky about the decoration method used on the plate. As annie stated above she had some problems with painted china and the peacock feather design. This is because the design is not really part of the glazed surface instead it was fired ontop of the glaze using china paints and ceramic decals. There is nothing wrong with china paints or ceramic decals, they are fairly durable when using the dish for its intended use but outside in the sun and underfoot is not good uses for these kind of decorated shards, I would never use them on things going out of doors or on the floor or even on countertops. These decorated shards are better saved for mosaicing frames, boxes, and interior projects that will not get a lot of handling. I would like to point out that terra cotta can be fired to a temp that it is not so porous but generally isn't as it is more economical to fire it lower. I find terra cotta items from Italy are much less porous than terra cotta objects from mexico or the U.S. p...See MoreNew Dishes: Stoneware or Porcelain
Comments (17)Perfect timing for this post Rachel - thanks. I'm also looking to replace my 37 year old (37 not a misprint) set of Corelle Cornerstone. It's not the typical thin, nearly translucent Corelle but it was CorningWare's attempt to compete with the popularity of Pfaltzgraff and other stoneware. It isn't quite as hefty as most stoneware, it stacks well and obviously has held up to 3 kids and my Dad. The bottom is flat and fully glazed which is something I never fully appreciated until we bought a new table and one of the kids slid a porcelain platter across the wooden top and the rough bottom scratched the table. Now I'm looking for plates with a smooth underside to protect my kitchen table. Even if it still has the ring from the mold some brands are smoother and glazed, others are very rough. I was at Macy's and BB&B and checked the Conran, Denby and some of the Mikasa patterns but will probably go with white too. However I am tempted by the soft sage green/ice blue Lenox French Perle but it's stoneware. I may just buy a small luncheon set. I also like the Mikasa Italian Countryside which is porcelain but many of the reviews say that it easily gets the gray marks from silverware. I thought I only had to worry about stoneware getting them. Maire...See MoreWhat is this stoneware (?) thing
Comments (11)It's pretty rustic (and ugly) to be a condiment server. It looks like it is molded, and like maybe the handle was hand made and attached by hand. I was thinking of planting something small in it, after drilling some drainage holes. A gardener friend thinks it is a planter, but admits she doesn't really know for sure. I'll hold off for a while before drilling holes in it. Thanks Linda. Sue...See MoreRelated Professionals
