What is wrong with her??

Hi everyone. Can I please ask for prayers?? For the third time now in the last 4 months, they've found my little 4 year old niece on the floor having some kind of a seizure where she just lays there and stares off... non responsive to anything. No one has found a reason for this yet. They are taking her to Akron Children's Hospital (where my youngest had her heart surgery and they are awesome with little ones!) Anyway, they are taking her there in the morning.

I feel sooooo bad for my brother! (her Dad) ... he is going thru soooooo much right now! I actually think his life is more chaotic than mine at this point. :(

And ... if I can say that about him... you have to know... IT'S BAD.

Please send up lots of prayers and good thoughts...... PLEASE...!

My Younger Cousin had silent Seizures, we were all scared to death. He is now 50 something. But, I remember he "outgrew" the seizures. They never knew why he had them.

I will pray for your Brother's Family. Hoping they get answers soon.

I'll just give you some of my opinions. First, I think it needs to be in a faster draining soil (not regular potting mix). If you've had it in the same soil for 5 years, it's time to change it. I would get regular potting soil and add perlite (2 parts potting soil to 1 part perlite). I don't think the heat vent/open window is good, but not too sure of the effects of that, so I'll leave that to someone else. If you can move it a little bit away so that it can still get some light, that might help. It needs MUCH more humidity. The pebble tray should always have water in it (but never so FULL so that it touches the bottom of the pot...you don't want the pot sitting in water). Misting 2-4X a month does absolutely nothing. MAYBE if you misted daily, 2-4X a day. But with that heater on, the water will dry off immediately. Also, is there a drainage hole in the pot? There MUST be one...if not, get a pot with a drainage hole. And make sure it isn't too rootbound. Are roots sticking out of the drainage hole? If you decide to repot, make sure you have about an inch between the root ball and the pot, so you might have to go up in size (but not too big). I live in cold NY and keep my dracaena marginata out of any direct light. I water it when it is completely dry. But twice a month seems like it might not be enough. You should probably be watering it when the soil is dry, and not so much on a schedule. If it turns out to be 2x a month, then ok...but make sure you don't let it stay dry for too long. It is definitely some type of fungus. Black spot also spots the canes and that is how it carries over. Then there are several different canker fungi. But I've never noticed that particular tricolor look with the white center. I would email Baldo Villegas ("rosebug" here) and ask him to look at your pictures and tell you whether or not to cut the rose all the way down. It is quite easy to distinguish foliar blackspot from other diseases because the spots are fringy, or on some varieties, notchy. If the leaf spots have that type of margin, it is not downy mildew. But I don't have a diagnostic for cane lesions. I have seen cane spots arrested and leading to no further trouble. No telling what would happen here.

The best lasagna I've ever made was in the Nesco using regular noodles. Diluted the sauce with a bit of water (or was it beer?), had plenty of sauce and of course the Nesco keeps it moist. In the oven, cover the noodles with sauce, cover the pan with foil (tightly sealed) and bake it. Several people I know and have read who've used the no-boil don't like the texture. Never tried them, probably never will. But my lasagna is generally quite expensive. But really, it feeds a lot of people, or a few people a lot of times and hey, good is good, you need to treat yourself right on occasion. When I'm going to cook elsewhere I usually bring cookware, utensils and definitely spices. I never assume anything. And I had the reverse experience cooking at my brother's place and a friend's cabin, both of which had cheap gas stoves while I was used to a pretty good electric stove. My old stove had two ovens, the top one had just one ordinary dial while the bottom one had the temperature separate, but the knob was a choice of preheat and bake, and I think there was another option or two but I can't remember what it was right now. I replaced it just short of a year ago. The worst part of it was the corningware top on it. Awful. Prewash dishes? Often! Especially at my dad's. My sister an I would occasionally go over when he was away and do some cleaning. One vivid memory was cleaning the stove. Reminder to people with gas stoves with pilot lights: Aerosol Dow Bathroom Cleaner, now known as "Scrubbing Bubbles" *likes* pilot lights. Very much. Whoa, very very much. I have grown back my eyebrows. But it was a sight to behold. Flames reminded me of campfires I used to build... Oh, I think I remember at least one of the other positions - timed bake. It didn't have a self cleaning so that wasn't it. I didn't use the bigger oven very often so I don't really remember it much. But I do have to wonder, since you were traveling to the land of where yur bruther's yur cuzin! uh, didn't you pick up some roadkill along the way to cook up fer the kinfolk? And BTW, I've owned and used microwaves of that vintage. I usually liked using them. Hope she likes the Bunn coffeemaker. When I tried to show my dad how to use the Norelco coffeemaker I had given my mother years before, (pour water in here, insert filter & put some coffee in here and flip this switch), his response? Oh... that's too much fussing... I don't tink I'll be using dat'n. So he occasionally used a little stovetop percolator. Or had an excuse to go out "for coffee". Argh! And I can't believe you didn't ask for the pie recipe! Don't you know you're supposed to *share*?

Many years ago, I went through a similar situation with my beloved Tempest, the cat who raised me from age 13 to adulthood. Tempest became ill and started to lose weight, appetite, and strength. I knew how terrified she was of car travel and trips to the vet, so I justified not taking her to the vet by "sparing" her the stress and fear. I watched her deteriorate over weeks and months, continuing my denial and justifications, until the day she lay suffering and dying in my arms. Only then did I finally take her to the vet, and of course euthanasia was my only option at that point. I will never purge myself of the guilt I carry over Tempest's slow, painful death. Nor do I want to. That guilt has prevented me from EVER making that sort of horrible mistake again. So as much as I would love to scream at your sister for her idiocy and the suffering she inflicted on her cat, what I really hope is that she carries the same "productive guilt" that I carry. That guilt will compel her to do better in the future, to be a more vigilant and proactive animal caretaker, to ignore her own fears and justifications in deference to her animals' needs. Guilt will help her if she learns from it. Please do whatever you can to make sure she never forgets the lesson her cat has taught her today. THAT is how she can best honor his life. Laurie

My neice had seizures and eventually she out grew them also. She did take meds for a few years before she did.

When my daughter was about 18 months, she had a seizure. Rushed her to hospital, they took care of her and she recovered completely. They were not sure if the seizure was caused by a fever or the penicillin I had been giving her for a viral infection. She's fine now, age 19 and never had any more seizures. But I do know how frightening it can be. Best of luck to you, I will say a prayer.

Prayers for you niece Nicki, and the entire family. My niece would have them too, if she got a fever over 100Â°+. I hope they find it's nothing serious.

Praying for your little niece. Hope it turns out to be something as simple as a pinched nerve or something (my DB had that when a baby and went through many seizures before they discoved a simple pinched nerve in his neck). Hugs to those who love her.

I watch a little girl, 18 months old, 2 days a week and she's going throught this right now too. For the last few months since her first seizure they have been running test and trying new meds on her. They never found a reasin but did get the right meds and she hasn't had one in a month. It's so scary though. Hope your neice will be ok.....

How scary-Poor thing!! DD had one when she was 1 year old due to high fever. I felt like asking the doc for a tranquilizer for me once we knew DD was okay!!

My friend (now mid 30's) also had seizures as a kid that she grew out of.

Hope they are able to figure out what is going on and she is okay!! Perhaps they should keep a journal to see if anything is "setting off" the seizures? A food, activity, or sickness/medicine etc?

Presumably they've considered petit mal epileptic seizures? With petit mal sufferers just "zone out" rather than have what we usually consider epileptic seizures, which are grand mal.
