What is wrong with her??

Hi everyone. Can I please ask for prayers?? For the third time now in the last 4 months, they've found my little 4 year old niece on the floor having some kind of a seizure where she just lays there and stares off... non responsive to anything. No one has found a reason for this yet. They are taking her to Akron Children's Hospital (where my youngest had her heart surgery and they are awesome with little ones!) Anyway, they are taking her there in the morning.

I feel sooooo bad for my brother! (her Dad) ... he is going thru soooooo much right now! I actually think his life is more chaotic than mine at this point. :(

And ... if I can say that about him... you have to know... IT'S BAD.

Please send up lots of prayers and good thoughts...... PLEASE...!

My Younger Cousin had silent Seizures, we were all scared to death. He is now 50 something. But, I remember he "outgrew" the seizures. They never knew why he had them.

I will pray for your Brother's Family. Hoping they get answers soon.

I'll just give you some of my opinions. First, I think it needs to be in a faster draining soil (not regular potting mix). If you've had it in the same soil for 5 years, it's time to change it. I would get regular potting soil and add perlite (2 parts potting soil to 1 part perlite). I don't think the heat vent/open window is good, but not too sure of the effects of that, so I'll leave that to someone else. If you can move it a little bit away so that it can still get some light, that might help. It needs MUCH more humidity. The pebble tray should always have water in it (but never so FULL so that it touches the bottom of the pot...you don't want the pot sitting in water). Misting 2-4X a month does absolutely nothing. MAYBE if you misted daily, 2-4X a day. But with that heater on, the water will dry off immediately. Also, is there a drainage hole in the pot? There MUST be one...if not, get a pot with a drainage hole. And make sure it isn't too rootbound. Are roots sticking out of the drainage hole? If you decide to repot, make sure you have about an inch between the root ball and the pot, so you might have to go up in size (but not too big). I live in cold NY and keep my dracaena marginata out of any direct light. I water it when it is completely dry. But twice a month seems like it might not be enough. You should probably be watering it when the soil is dry, and not so much on a schedule. If it turns out to be 2x a month, then ok...but make sure you don't let it stay dry for too long. Thank you all for your prayers! Wendy is happy to be home with her family. Her recovery will be slow and achy, but she will get better. The doctors are not yet sure if this will be a chronic thing. I sure hope not. Janice took her last breath the night before last. Thankfully, she did not linger and suffer. She is now at peace, and her family is left to comfort one another. Now to help daughter #4 survive the period between now and when her divorce is final in January. Her husband is being particularly cruel...devoting his time to his much younger girlfriend, pretty much ignoring his daughters (11 & 15), refusing to move out, and coming and going at all hours of the night...waking everyone up. To say nothing of his throwing a meager $100 on the counter each week for food and household essentials for the three of them. My daughter has been a stay-at-home mom for the past 11 years, at least, and will have a real struggle to get back into the workforce. Right now, her first priority is her girls. She is really determined and will be fine! And I thought old age would be peaceful and less stressful!! LOL I remember hearing years ago that the older your kids got the bigger the problems got. It's true!! And most of their problems were caused by other people! I could write a book! LOL Thanks again. You guys are the absolute best! Love, Sandy

you don't want to over pot a hoya or any plant. the reason is that when you water the soil tends to stay wet too long causing fungus and root rot. I don't know what kind of soil you have it planted in but over the years it could have broken down and turned more "peaty" which holds even more water. So my best guess is that it is too wet and you need to repot in a well draining mix. gl (yes it is a hoya)

I finally got to read your whole post. I bet you are feeling like tearing your hair out because she sure doesn't seem to value your time or that you have other things to do. I am so sorry. My dad will be 91 in July and had hip/femur surgery in November and, sadly, it just hasn't healed. The next step is a partial hip replacement with a titanium rod inserted in the femur. What I have noticed is that on the days he has pain he can't seem to hand me his lunch or dinner plate or mail in order for me to clean up. I think it is a mental decision that they can't do the simplest of things. I think contacting any senior centers or any senior programs available through government services might be a great start. There are organizations that will take your mom grocery shopping or to appointments if they are fairly local. Some charge, some take donations and some are totally free. Many grocery stores have online ordering and will deliver to her home for a fee. That could be a lifesaver for sure. Do insist on being in charge of her calendar or you won't be able to attend or drive. She cannot make decisions for you when you are the ride. Let us know what you have decided to do and know that we all support you and most have gone through (or are going through) similar situations. The is a great place to vent! Robyn

I hope they find out soon too!
My neice had seizures and eventually she out grew them also. She did take meds for a few years before she did.

When my daughter was about 18 months, she had a seizure. Rushed her to hospital, they took care of her and she recovered completely. They were not sure if the seizure was caused by a fever or the penicillin I had been giving her for a viral infection. She's fine now, age 19 and never had any more seizures. But I do know how frightening it can be. Best of luck to you, I will say a prayer.

Prayers for you niece Nicki, and the entire family. My niece would have them too, if she got a fever over 100Â°+. I hope they find it's nothing serious.

Praying for your little niece. Hope it turns out to be something as simple as a pinched nerve or something (my DB had that when a baby and went through many seizures before they discoved a simple pinched nerve in his neck). Hugs to those who love her.

I watch a little girl, 18 months old, 2 days a week and she's going throught this right now too. For the last few months since her first seizure they have been running test and trying new meds on her. They never found a reasin but did get the right meds and she hasn't had one in a month. It's so scary though. Hope your neice will be ok.....

How scary-Poor thing!! DD had one when she was 1 year old due to high fever. I felt like asking the doc for a tranquilizer for me once we knew DD was okay!!

My friend (now mid 30's) also had seizures as a kid that she grew out of.

Hope they are able to figure out what is going on and she is okay!! Perhaps they should keep a journal to see if anything is "setting off" the seizures? A food, activity, or sickness/medicine etc?

My daughter had seizures like that. They prescribe meds that keep them under control.

Presumably they've considered petit mal epileptic seizures? With petit mal sufferers just "zone out" rather than have what we usually consider epileptic seizures, which are grand mal.
