Is Glidden Gripper oil based? I would go with BIN on the cabinets or a high quality oil based primer. Cabinet Coat is fine for the cabinets as a finish coat. A high quailty 100 percent acrylic paint is best for wall painting. Latex/acrylic paints of today are every bit as durable as oils without all the drawbacks you get with using an oil based paint. Anyone who would recommend using an oil based paint for wall painting should be fired from the paint aisle.

Primer is water based acrylic.

You can use an acrylic primer, but it will not grip as well as the oil based primers or BIN, plus any stains from the stripping process or any old varnish/poly/stain may bleed through the acrylic primer. BIN is good because it will kill stains and bond the best. For wall painting, I usually use Benjamin Moore Regal or C2, but top line paints from Sherwin Williams or ICI are also just fine.

As far as the cabinets go, ACE Cabinet and Door paint is what i can get locally, its supposed to be a 50 state legal version of Cabinet Coat. Should i Use the Ace stuff or try to mail order the Cabinet Coat?

I have never used Cabinet Coat or the Ace version of it. I have only heard about it on this forum endorsed by so many. There are plenty of good cabinet paints out there though. Sherwin Williams Pro Classic, Grahams, Muralo, C2, Benjamin Moore Waterborne Satin Impervo and Aura are all good choices.

I don't like Behr. It is 100 percent acrylic, but I don't consider it to be high quality. How much was it?

while ive got you here, and you appear pretty well versed in painting, could you tell me if im doing this right?

- strip -> sand -> clean -> tack cloth
- prime 2 coats
- sand lightly -> clean -> tack cloth
- paint 2 coats

I just tried some Behr Ultra Premium or something for a lady that provided the paint for me....she said it was $16 per gallon. It was pretty bad....didn't spread or flow, flashed like crazy. With those application properties, I can't imagine that it will clean that well. I imagine the Behr resin is 100 percent acrylic, but the rest of the ingredients are garbage. What this means is that it will cover well, so homeowners and DIY'ers may think it's great stuff, but coverage is only one of the things we look for in a paint. In a small kitchen with low lighting or absence of sunlight coming in from windows, it may look okay, but if washability is a concern, I wouldn't expect it to perform well.

There is probably no need to double prime unless you really apply the first coat poorly. If your first coat of primer is a full one, then you can move right on to finish coating. I have never used a tack cloth in my life, but you do want to use some method to remove dust from sanding before applying the next coat...tack cloth is one of those methods, but I always have a dust brush on hand to dust out the corners of the panels and such that a tack cloth will certainly miss. What can happen is your brush will pick up those particles when you are painting and you will end up with a rough surface. Two finish coats is good.
