Pro - Con of Using Countertop as Part of Backsplash - w Pic

Hello All,

What are your opinions about using countertop material as part of the backsplash vs not? Here's 2 pics, 1 w/ each style. I'm seeing that anything goes, but are there any pros or cons? I've included the materials we're thinking of using with our quartz.

When this topic gets discussed around here, its generally thought dated to put in a 4" counter strip with tile above. No good reason to use the strip. All tile above looks better IMHO, and it's less visually messy not to have the line of the strip calling your attention.

I agree with Breezy. Years ago, kitchens had the strip and the wall above it was eiher wall papered or painted. Backsplashes came into popularity and there really wasn't a reason to keep theat four inch strip.

Unless you seal it and scrupulously maintain the sealant, the copper will definitely turn a mottled dark brown, like an old penny, regardless of whether it's splashed on; just a natural effect of oxidation. It's gorgeous but whether you like it for your space all depends on the effect you're after. Aliceinwonderland is my idol (waves!), and here are the copper countertops I made that are modeled after her incredible island. Don't know how dark your cabinets are; these are a medium-dark 15-yr-old cherry with a 'fruitwood' stain, whatever that was in the '90's (we recycled them from the ReStore). All the counters are copper, around 5 yrs old.

oh, momo...now I have google ann sacks and found those tiles...I JUST LOVE THEM. $83 per square foot, eh? Ay yi yi! I also found other tiles there that I love. Part of me almost wants to go nuts and ethnic and busy, since the rest of my kitchen is so simple. I am just afraid I will tire of it. Like this... (not this exactly, I just mean a busy, ethnic pattern. Kind of looks 70s to me, also.) cherry-Yes, we addressed the torso issue already! Yet another reason I want the mirror antiqued, and also not flat panes but rather tiles, so the "cuts" will break up the view a bit! I know what you mean, some of these threads get so long and I want to give my 2 cents but I just *know* one of my comments has probably already been made, but I say it anyway. Thanks for the input. You are not the only one with the opinion that with so much stainless and "coolness" I should go with warmth/color/texture. The things is...I see so many finished white kitchens similar to mine that have white tile as a BS, and I like them. I also like those pics that momo posted in her link, and they are white, with SS appliances, and mirrored BS and I think they look good. Well, I am torn and DH really wants me to make a decision so he can install. He wants the tile/color/texture look. I will keep you guys updated! Thanks so much!

Travertine backsplash, pros/cons??

It's funny to read this thread from 5 years ago hearing people talking about travertine as dated. My wife and I just bought a house and it is a pretty big upgrade to go from the included tile backsplash to a travertine backsplash. I guess my point is, and I doubt anyone is even reading this anyway 5 years later, but my point is that I agree with the people that say go with what you like and don't worry about anyone else's opinions. It's your house. Why do people always concern themselves with how other people will like their things, when they are not the ones spending all their time there.

Thanks Patricia...paled grayed green sounds appealing-Ill look at those colors...as for cabinets-yes, theyll be installed directly on the log wall...we're blessed with an amazing cabinetmaker who is skilled in log home cabinet installation....we also have kiln dried logs-so they wont shrink/settle too much. Ill attach a pic (not a great one, but the only I could find at the moment) of the lower furing wall we had originally built for the lowers--then tore out-because that would have made a backsplash stick out several inches-a ledge--it would have looked weird, & would have pushed fridge & cabinets out too..eating up several inches of kitchen space. So, we took out the furing wall-moved the fridge outlet to the corner, literally, of the log wall & drywall (can see it in my 1st pic of original post-midway up the wall) & plumbing was able to come up through the floor instead of the wall-I conceded & instead of a wall switch am doing an air switch in counter for disposal-only thing left was switch for over sink light-which for convenience-I wanted near the sink-so we're doing a shallow mount light switch under the upper cabinet, to right of sink-unconventional I believe-but a good tradeoff in my mind. Our cabinetmaker is making the upper cabinet rails a little longer anyway for lights/outlets under the cabinets-so I think it will work out ok. I may need to always point out to guests where that switch is-but worth it in order to have a normal 4" granite backsplash on the log wall. The tile will cover the open areas on the drywall/range side--including behind the chimney hood. Sooo..thats the plan-its been one of those ongoing challenges that went on for quite some time-& we finally got everyomes input & solved the problem..yay! :) Now for the fun stuff :)

I agree with the above. I think the last picture looks like people added the backsplash after the fact...

The 4" strip makes the backsplash look like an afterthought IMHO.

Love your counter and backsplash choices! It will look so sleek with counter top on the counter and tile on the wall. I'm afraid if you put that bit of counter on the wall it will very nearly kill your desired visual impact.

If you are spending money to put in a new counter
and backsplash why bother with the 4 inch splash.

Oh, good grief. Do what makes you happy. Will anyone from these forums ever see it anyway?

It won't be long before tile backsplash from cabinet to counter will be considered outdated. Just ask my neighbor who has one that was installed in 1968.

Thank you x6. This is exactly the feedback I was hoping for.

Counter backsplash before the rest of the wall art was imprinted on my brain from the old laminate days...but no 4" counter trim is not something I'm use to seeing.

The design logic of it looking like an afterthought, and wrecking the visual feel I'm after said it perfectly. And, it is nice to know, in the end, to not take it too seriously as tastes and style change over time...a good reminder.

If you need another reason, it is a dust catcher. I'd keep it and work around it if it were already there, but I would not add it if I were doing a bs from scratch.
