Ghirardelli Unsweetend Cocoa Powder

I lived in the SE corner of NH/NE corner of MA area. I have been to every grocery store in the area and can't find this item. It seems like all the stores have very low stock of any of unsweetened cocoa powder. The only ones I can find are store brand or Hersheys. Yuck! Is there a shortage I don't know about? It's available on line just not in the local stores. Any one else finding this to be true????

Does it have to be Ghirardelli? I usually get unsweetened cocoa powder at either a good health-food store or our local co-op. It's sold bulk, in different-size plastic bags, so I don't know the source, but I trust the places I get it from, and it's always been high quality--and it costs a lot less than the packaged stuff. I'm even farther up in the frozen north than you are, so I'd be surprised if you didn't have similar kinds of stores in that area.

I can't get Ghirardelli cocoa powder at my Krogers, though I can get Ghirardelli bar chocolate--100%, 60%, semi-sweet--and chips.

I have a tried and true recipe for them..I've been doing it for years. Cream Cheese Swirl Brownies adapted from a bunch of recipes 1/2 c melted or very soft butter 1.5 c sugar 1 t vanilla 1.25 c flour 2/3 c cocoa 1 t baking powder 1 t salt 4 eggs 1/2 c chopped nuts and/or chocolate chips (optional) Cream Cheese Swirl 16oz cream cheese, softened 1/3 c sugar 1 egg 1 t vanilla In a large mixing bowl, add melted or VERY softened butter. Stir in the sugar and vanilla. Add in one pile on top, flour, cocoa, salt and baking powder; then crack all 4 eggs. Mix all together well with a wooden spoon. Don't beat! Grease a 9x13 pan with a bit of butter, and spread all but about 1/2 c of batter in the pan. In the mixer bowl(electric mixer needed) add in the softened cream cheese, and beat until smooth. Add in vanilla and egg. Beat again until smooth. Spread the cream cheese topping over the brownie batter, but not all the way to the edges. Drop on the remainder of the brownie batter, and cut through the batters with a knife making a swirl pattern. Bake at 350F for 30-40 minutes. Don't over bake!

Jo, It's amazing how the minute you cross the state line prices jump across the board no matter what the purchase. On one of our trips to White Flower Farm we stopped at a grocery store to see if the western part of the state was any different. Nope, the Litchfield Hills are, if anything, higher. Yeah, I'm sure Guilford has to be pretty similar to Mystic; maybe, even higher since you're closer to the City. Cloud swift, I just checked the Costco website to see if they perhaps had a new store but, alas, there's no store within 50 miles of Mystic. :( It's a zoning thang...Mystic doesn't even allow fast food restaurants except the one McDs at the entrance to I-95 & that's because of the large numbers of tourists visiting the Seaport & aquarium (McDs is basically right across the street from the aquarium). Walmart tried to get a store in...holy cow, you'd have thought it was a adult toy store the way voters responded! So, even our closest Wally World is a good ten miles away...over in the inland part of Groton. Doesn't really matter 'cause DH & I don't shop there anyway...personal protest thing. New England zoning laws discourage competition from large national stores...it interfers with the Norman Rockwell'ness of the area. There was a fire in downtown Mystic about six years ago & we lost an entire building. An out-of-state developer purchased the shell with the intent of rebuilding with the first floor retail & the upper floors high-end condos. Every plan they've submitted has been shot down by either the voters or the Historical Committee. I 'almost' feel sorry for the developers...they seriously underestimated the power of the New England Town Meeting! :) The whole issue revolves around windows. The developer wants to put large windows in the back of the building that overlooks Mystic River & the Seaport. They say buyers want large windows. The Historical Commitee & the voters say, "We don't care what your buyers want. Large windows are NOT appropriate to a first quarter 19th century New England building. They must be small." (So small...you can't meet fire code!) So, the building sits boarded up. I understand there's another "plan" to be presented sometime next spring. We'll see... It's not just groceries or gas or housing costs...once you get the flour home then the electricity rates to bake the bread are the 3rd highest in the nation behind only Hawaii & our dear neighbors Rhode Island. All of New England has a high cost of living. We used to ask about it when we first moved here but were always met with a blank stare & a response of, "Yeah, and your point is???" So, we don't ask anymore. We've just adjusted. When I look at these electric rates it's almost funny how much cheaper they are outside New England. All that said, I love living in New England & I wouldn't leave easily. So, maybe after living here for twenty years I finally understand all of those blank stares about the cost of living followed by the, "And your point is???" /tricia

Glenda this is tried and true by me, who doesn't like to fool around much with desserts so if I can do it, anybody can! Sol's recipes are all great - as are Marilyns! Molten Lava Cakes -Sol Â½ pound bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped Â½ pound butter 6 whole eggs, room temperature 1 Â½ cups sugar Â½ cup flour Preheat the oven to 400Â°F. Butter the bottom and sides of 8 6-ounce ramekins and sprinkle with baking cocoa, tap to remove excess cocoa. Set aside. In the top of a double boiler or in a microwave, gently, melt the chocolate and butter. Whisk until completely melted. Meanwhile, in a large bowl whisk together the eggs, sugar and flour until just blended. Gradually whisk the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture until combined. Evenly divide the mixture between the prepared ramekins. Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the tops are firm and beginning to crack and the edges are set. Remove from oven and serve immediately, with ice cream, your favorite chocolate sauce, a few chocolate-covered coffee beans and giddyap baby!. I can almost feel my zippy-self coming back to life, just thinking 'bout it ;-Ã Note: I didn't use ramekins. Instead I used mini wonder-molds for these cakes 'cause I liked their shape. These molds are quite a bit larger than the ramekins, so for me, this recipe only yielded 5 servings. Chocolate Sauce 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1/3 cup light brown sugar 1/3 cup light corn syrup 12 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vanilla extract or liqueur Heat the cream, sugar, salt and corn syrup in a saucepan over low heat. Bring to a boil, stirring often, until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and add the chocolate. Allow to stand a few minutes until the chocolate has melted, then whisk gently until smooth. Whisk in vanilla or liqueur. Note ~ I know you love Valrhona, so do I. But for this, I used Lindt because it's another favorite, and it's what I always have around. As long as the chocolate tastes good and the texture is silky to begin, then it'll be a good candidate for this sauce. If you end up using another type of chocolate and you notice tiny lumps in your finished product, don't panic. Just strain the chocolate mixture through a fine sieve, it'll be fine.

I've made this recipe many times. It's from Epicurious and America's Test Kitchen (it's the very same recipe): Chocolate Fudge Sauce 1/3 C cocoa, measured, then sifted, set aside 3 oz chopped unsweetened chocolate, set aside (don't make chunks out of your chocolate because they take too long to melt) 4 T unsalted butter, cut into little cubes, set aside (put it in the fridge until needed) 1 tsp vanilla, set aside In sauce pan: 2/3 C whole milk 1 1/4 C granulated sugar 1/4 tsp salt Put the sauce pan over medium heat and whisk while heating--this will take 3 to 5 minutes, and then it will come to an active boil. Add 1/3 C of cocoa and whisk it in with the milk, sugar and salt. Remove the sauce pan from the heat. Add 3 oz chopped unsweetened chocolate that you set aside, and whisk it in the milk, sugar, salt and cocoa in the saucepan... it'll melt right in! Let it sit for 3 minutes. Whisk. Add 4 T unsalted butter & whisk in the butter. Add 1 tsp vanilla and whisk. Taste. Taste again. Put a little bit of peanut butter on a spoon and dip the spoon into chocolate. Taste. Try it again, just to be sure it tastes ok. Store in fridge for up to 1 month.

I like and use Droste more than Ghirardelli though I usually have both in the house. Might try it if that's available.

I use Droste also. Ghirardelli only if that's not available. What about online or mail order? I haven't tried this store, but other GWers swear by it.

I use Hershey's or Nestle's, that's all that's available here without a 100 mile round trip drive! And I just stopped at Penzey's yesterday, and didn't think to get cocoa there, I got a free bottle of "mural of flavor" and some corned beef spices.

Hershey's is not so bad, it's better than Nestle's...

It's all been shipped to Australia. Imagine my surprise when I saw Ghirardelli cocoa powder in the local rural supermarket! Want me to mail you some? ;-)

I live in a small town and my only choices are Hershey's, Hershey's special dark (my favorite, Nestle's and Kroger brand. If you are hooked on that particular brand, you may want to consider purchasing it in bulk from Amazon or another retailer. BTW, our local Big Lots has been carrying Droste!

Has anyone found the Ghiradelli or Hershey's Special Dark in Canada? I would like to try either or both, but haven't seen them anywhere.

I live in SE Connecticut & Ghirardelli is available at all grocery stores in my area. I also used to buy Ghirardelli in Manchester, NH but that's been 5+ years ago.

I live in the seacoast area of NH - Portsmouth/Durham/Dover area. I have two 10 oz.cans of Ghiradelli Natural Unsweetened Cocoa powder in my pantry. I bought them at Hannaford.

There's a new Hannaford near the UNH campus in Durham, close to Dover/Durham exit. There's one close to Spaulding Tpk. Exit 9 in Dover. There are 2 Hannafords a little further north in Rochester. It's worth checking their site to see if there's one closer to you.

I purchased my tins a few months ago. I presume Hannaford still carries it, but will check when I go shopping today and report back.

I keep it on hand to make hot chocolate. We have an ice rink in our back yard in winter and it's a treat the skaters always look forward to. It has a much richer chocolate flavor than the mixes, and I like being able to adjust the level of sweetness. Good stuff!

I was able to find Ghirardellis locally up until a couple weeks ago. I checked Hannafords in Hampton last week but no luck. Over the past souple weeks, I've tried Stop & Shop, Market Basket, Shaws, Walmart and several independents with no luck. I guess I'll have to order on line. :-(

moosemac,you've probably placed your online order by now but wanted to report back that there were multiple cans at my Dover Hannaford store @ $4.29.

This post moved out of sight and I forgot to post back earlier, but shopped in Rochester today and took note of them. Can't explain the shortage just a few miles south. Hope it was just temporary.

I also prefer and usually use Droste, but will buy Hershey on occasion. I don't usually find Ghiradelli at my local store, at least not in the unsweetened powder.

Thanks for the tip. My DD boyfriend is up in Dover frequently so I'll send him over to the Hannafords for a stock pile.
