Flank steak -- the long and the short of it

I just bought a big hunk of flank steak at Costco, and now I must cook it. I have found web sites that say it must be cooked only a short time or it will get tough, and I have also read that it is a tough cut that need long cooking. So which is correct?

Any good recipe suggestions?
