Evaluating Restaurants By Their Menus

I and some friends will be spending a few days in a place we've never visited. To avoid hours of aimless driving, hunting for a place to eat and then maybe striking out on our selection, I've been scouting the on-line menus. Have you done this? Or maybe perused menus posted at entrances as you walked around a town?

What clues do you look for? What would you see in the descriptions of the food that would attract you or repel you? I'm looking for impressions here. If we want sushi, we would look for that category, of course. Same for Mexican. But what words on the menu tip you off that a restaurant "has it together"? Or doesn't.
