Going To Try.......Tips for 1st time Bread Baker?

So many of you have posted pictures, and referenced your homemade breads that I am compelled to give it a try.

About 8 yrs. ago I got a bread machine and just wasn't all that pleased with the results. The loaves never came close to the artisinal breads I bought at the specialty store in taste, texture and appearance. I'm also drawn to the idea of working through the process from start to finish.

I went to the library today and took out "The Bread Baker's Apprentice" by Peter Reinhart. Haven't had an opportunity to crack it open yet. Do any of you recommend other books?

In addition to asking for general "get started" help, I am also wondering if anyone has successfully adapted recipes to make smaller batches, as DH & are empty nesters.

For health reasons I am particularly interested in baking whole wheat and whole grain breads. Thanks -
