Jujubes.

One of the farm market vendors had jujubes today. I had a taste of this apple-like fruit and think I will get some another time to make jam. Any other ideas for jujubes?

He also had bitter melon which was much less attractive to me. He said it was bitter and an acquired taste but had many health benefits. Thoughts and experiences, anyone?

The perfect use for Jujubes is to pull the fillings out of your teeth. I remember eating them in the movie theater when I was a kid and then having to dig them out of my teeth with my finger. You're talking about the candy, right??

No, this is a fruit that is apple-like but very small. About the size of a golfball or smaller.

Have 3 ('Li', 'Lang', and 'Sherwood'), getting on 10 years old in southern New Jersey, ordinary suburban fill soil, USDA Zone 6A. Sure, they send out lateral roots which sucker, (especially when they hit a sidewalk or street) but just prune to base periodically or mow over them. No problem unless you leave them a few years to get woody! And, jujube is perhaps the most trouble-free of my exotic fruit trees, no fungi, viruses, bacterial problems. An occasional fruit has a tiny borer worm (I pit and dry most of my fruit), that's about it. And greatly visited by small bees when in bloom! That, and harvest by gently shaking the trunks. What more could you want in a fruit tree? Although Chinese jujube are fine in moderate rainfall temperate climate, they really shine in desert conditions, just covered with huge, sweet fruit (have seen in Las Vegas and Tuscon). Other jujubes (spina-christi, mauritiana, etc.) better in hotter or tropical climes, I think.

Thanks meilkeeatplants! I don’t sell any fruits. I shared the fruits with a couple renters on the property last year. They didn’t mind the spots on the apples. I had thousands of pears but I didn’t get any. not even one, not sure what kind of animals got them. It would be nice if I could bring spotless apples to work and share with the city folks, I know they won’t like the spots.......

Need help growing / Pruning my Li Jujube tree

Hello All, i got my Li jujube tree last spring(2020) 5 gal. Arounf 6 ft tall from the top of the container. Not sure whether grafted or air-layered. I rrplanted the tree into costco big container(17 gal may be). Also, fertilized the tree. i water it twice or thrice a week during spring & Summer & very occasionally during winter. The tree flowered last year & no fruits. Then during winter it went to dormant. This spring when the growth started, the side branches were dried & new growth started from next to some of the branches. The top 10 inches of the tree also got dried out (above the green ribbon). The side growth is around 8 inces now. I am not sure what mess i am doing. I didn’t do any pruning last yr. May be missed some waterings as well. We live near LA (South bay area - 90503). I would really appreciate if someone could give me some tips for fruiting & flowering. Here comes some pics.

@iochroma Thanks a lot for the coment. could u pls give me some more inputs. i am planning to add few more varieties to my existing Li jujube tree. what wou be the ideal scion wood (graft). How thick? This yrs growth or last yrs growth. Also, should i just add one node or can graft a cutting with few nodes. shou should i keep the tree in sun or shade? i can give the graft some shade though with the other tree that is planted in another container next to that.

LOL...I was thinking about the candy too. I have never heard of the actual fruit with that name.

Bitter melon is well regarded as a miracle drug, so to speak. I have a client who is of Caribbean descent and diabetic, and she swears that bitter melon is good for her. I haven't tried it yet.
