Garage Door needs paint - help!

We need to paint our garage door, but are dragging our feet because we had a not so great experience with painting our front door. (Clearly, you can't take a garage door off its hinges and lay it flat on saw horses .. now that's a picture)! So ... we would greatly appreciate step-by-step instructions from someone experienced. I have not had any success with good advice from any of our local paint suppliers. Ask 3 times and you'll get 3 different answers. Any direction greatly appreciated.

You pull the cord to disengage the door from the opener. Then you paint the top panel. Leave what you cannot reach on the perimeter. Then you paint the second from the top panel, the third from the top and then the bottom panel. Open the door all the way up now, go inside your garage, get on a step ladder and paint the perimeter. Leave the door open all day or longer....you want to give the paint enough real dry time before you close it and the painted surface makes contact with the rubber weatherstrip.

Gee Thanks paintguy ... you're swell. Would never have dawned on me to approach it that way. Could you also give me some direction on type of paint to use for this metal door? It's already painted, just needs fresh coat. No primmer needed? Also, I assume a paint roller would be used? Sorry to sound so clueless ... guess that's why I'm here! Your assistance is very appreciated!

Kiwi I'll share a pic of our new garage doors. Our windows are also black and I had originally wanted stained garage doors but found these instead. Martin pinnacle line they function beautifully. Just installed last month. I am staining my fiberglass doors. I did the front doors and used Zar stain in moorish teak but went over it with Cetol finish that had an oak stain. Need help choosing paint colors. Can’t change brick or garage doors

You don't want to hear it, but you need to paint the garage doors the same color as the body of the house. That dark brown door is dominating whatever decision you make. It looms over everything else. Find a color that is close to the color of the brick. Paint everything with that color, including the garage door. Of the three colors illustrated, I like the top color. It's pretty close to the brick color. When you change the front door out, you can paint or stain it another color. Use as few colors as possible. This is not a painted lady Victorian. Three colors are the maximum and the brick counts as a color.

If you search ’brown brick trim colors’, lots of ideas come up. Just an example: Of course none will be your exact brick, but it might help with ideas. And after narrowing down possibilities, search everywhere you can for examples — Pinterest, Instagram tags, etc. Your white windows are definitely an important factor to consider, so I’d look for an experienced, reliable pro in your area for advice on a color that will work well with both them and the brick. It’s a big job, you want it to be right the first time! What color is the front door? Are you in the Houston area? Or a different southern state? Just curious, I’m admiring the Live Oaks. :)

100 percent high quality exterior acrylic paint in satin or semi-gloss depending on how shiny you like it. I prefer satin. I would hose down the door first to get the dirt off and then let it dry. A power washer is probably overkill....any stubborn dirt you can just scrub away with a brush and then hose off. You don't need primer if there is no rust showing and the paint is in sound condition. Every door is different in terms of my application method. Those fiberglass doors with the grain look come out perfect by just using a roller, though you may need to use a brush to get into the inset parts of the panels. You could also use a roller just to get the paint on faster and then backbrush each panel or section. It depends on the look you are going after. Do not paint the door while the sun is shining on it or that will just ruin the fun.

We did what paintguy did two years ago and have been very pleased. We have a large single wood door...what I would have done different was not putting the paint on too thick where the panels come together. I had a couple that stuck together and pulled apart hard when the door was closed.
