Almost done, last few decisions I need help on please.

Thanks for all your help. I've been reading a lot of your old posts and have gotten some great advice. I've really learned how to do a good paint job vs. a common DIY job.

I just need a little more advice to finish up!

(I'm sticking with BM for everything)

For ceiling paint:

Paintguy has said the cheapest are the best. Does this mean I go to a big box and pickup their cheapo stuff or just grab BM's cheap stuff? For colors, I hate to spend a bunch of time choosing. I just want proven choices. Cloud white seems the popular choice for ceilings. Is that right? What sheen for the kitchen ceiling?

For walls:

Which BM 'brand' and sheen is the best for walls? I'm looking for a good tan color. I've seen Shaker Beige and Lennox Tan and I'm not quite sold. What are the other common/popluar tans I might want to look at?

For Trim:

Again which BM brand and sheen? I'm thinking White Dove. Is that a good choice? I've also seen that some like Bone White.

Hi Steven,

You've been busy!

You have to harmonize the three colors together. Can't look at them individually, i.e. Cloud White is a good color for ceilings. We need to determine what color is a good color for YOUR ceiling.

That's predicated on what else is going on with the color palette. First decide on your wall color then coordinate your ceiling and trim color *to* the wall color.

Sheen spec's should go like this:
Ceiling = flat
Walls = a "washable" matte or an eggshell or a lo-sheen satin.
Trim = satin or a semi.

Flat for the ceiling to help hide imperfections. Light coming in from windows hits the ceiling first then bounces down into the room. Same with lots of artificial fixtures; a lot of them 'go up' first. Ceilings are notorious for having imperfections and higher sheens will help highlight them.

A very high quality matte like Aura, egg, or lo-sheen satin for walls because you do need cleanability in a kitchen. The higher quality mattes are indeed washable, you do not need the slip of higher sheens unless the way you use your kitchen is beyond normal, domestic cooking. i.e. I wouldn't put Aura matte in a restaurant's kitchen.

Trim should be the shinest sheen like satin or a semi. Durability and aesthetics explain this spec.

Colors, if Shaker B. and Lennox aren't doing it for you, you should grab a chip of Sherwin Williams Latte. It might strike that happy medium between the two.

One idea for a complete palette:

Walls - SW Latte mixed in Aura Matte
Ceiling - SW Divine White (it's not really white) BenM Super Spec flat
Trim - BenM Super White in BenM Satin Impervo

oh.. okay a palette .. that makes sense!

I was trying to just play it safe and pick some commonly used colors, but I like where your going.

I had a friend come over with some chips (these were from H.Depot&Rest.Hardware)I like the tans she picked. M.Stewart Living - Pebble Stone MSL214 and R.Hard. Cappucino. Unfortunately my SW store is closed today so I can't check out their Latte. Luckily for me, BM store is open! Really I just need to get ceiling and myb. wall paint today, but as you say. I need to decide on wall before I decide on ceiling. I think I like a more grey tan.

I'm afraid if I take one of these chips my friend brought over for color matching it won't work well off a chip. Maybe I'll just take them in and see what BM chip matches closely.

I was also considering a green and a rust color to accent with. Have you ever seen Behr SH320 Enchanting Ginger (rust)? I picked this one and everyone that sees it isn't too crazy about it but I really like it. I was just going to accent with it.

Possible Greens: (Both Behr samps) UL190-21 Ginko Tree and UL190-2 Deserted Island.

So other than the ceiling and trim is this starting to sound like a palette? This is an old 1926 Bungalow with an open floor plan but only about 900 sq ft. It has some fun archways too that I thought the idea is to just paint them white underneath and inside(?).

For now we'll just keep priming, but I need to decide soon.

My buddy says just pick one and lets paint. I guess I'm just kinda picky about colors for a guy :)

Lauren -- thanks much, we are trying to get our DIY/pro mix to "take" in our 6 x 10.5ish room! Agree we may end up with 1 fixed if budget constraints get in the way, but seems like it'd be a shame. 1) Window credit goes to tiler, though we made his job harder by forcing him to design from the full run of 6 x 6 tiles between the window. All cuts relate to that, for better or worse. 2) Yep, leaded glass -- I found/fell in love with the salvage doors years back (not in my house, alas) and basically designed the bathroom around 'em. Fell a little less in love with them after spending hours using progressively more toxic cleaners on the decades of mineral etc deposits before sending them off to the cabinetmaker. And of course after priming and painting (and painting) the cab boxes. But I'm feeling the love return, ha. 3) Oh, glass tile would have been too easy, ha. You know I love my aqua iridescent glass mosaic backsplash, but Mr Vix and I both feel in love with a ceramic liner topped with oyster shell slivers. Luckily the bath is small and our field tile was rock bottom in price, sigh. HEY MARISA -- No need to worry about being lonely while all others finish -- we just went to install our sink and the GC's plumber didn't seem to take our vanity shelf configuration into account, so we'll probably have to call (another!) pro for help. No running water for meeeeeeee though it's nice to have it out of the den (though its mirror needs to join it!):

If you're talking about the bathroom off the Rumpus room, the only thing I think you really need to do is make it a tiny bit wider. I would bring the bathroom wall out even with the edge of the Rumpus Room's built-in cabinets so that there is a little more "standing room" in front of the toilet and the shower is a little bigger. Then, if window placement will allow you to do so, for the convenience of guests staying in the guest room, you might mirror image the whole bathroom vertically so that the sink (and door) are up close to the guest room and the shower is down by the built-in cabinets. That would save your guests a few steps to reach the toilet in the middle of the night. Now stop obsessing! There ARE only so many ways to arrange a toilet, a shower, and a vanity. LOL! The whole upstairs looks fantastic. Great theater room, nice large play room with plenty of room for a bar sink and fridge and storage of games/toys, a balcony that'll be big enough to actually sit out on to enjoy the view, AND easy access to the unfinished attic! I think you've done good! Now how about having your architect revise the elevation drawings and post those just so we can see them? I'm looking forward to watching you build.

I would go with the antiqued brass. First off it would look lovely. Also brass is making a come back. Also mixing metals is fine. My space has bronze pulls, a coppery bronze faucet, and ss appliances. Go with your instincts of what would look good. It took me five weeks of spending most of my waking hours looking at different pulls on the net. I finally found the one that made my heart sing. My cabs have a very subtle beading on them and my hardware has an edge of beading in each groove. Good luck and I am anxious to see your kitchen when it's done.

It's not easy going through these renos especially when you are feeling abandoned by your GC. Is there anyone you can go to to help move things along? I feel for you sweet one. It's not easy being at the mercy of these less than dependable people. Ã¢ÂÂ¦.I just did a Bible study that was so helpful, it said to just start thanking God even in the bad times and to look at where you can see Him in any of this. Ask God to help you get through this and then thank Him each time something does or even when it doesn't go right. It helped me a lot, not sure if that would interest you but it helps me almost immediately to be calmer and more peaceful about the situations that come with life. The study that I did is called "One Thousand Gifts" by Ann Voss. Her voice is so soothing (see link). All the best to you and may you have a peaceful day and much progress be made! Â Ben Moore stores usually do a good job color matching. They also usually have competitors fandecks. So if you want to see SW Latte, they probably have a chip for you to look at.

Â Green + rust accent wall doesn't belong in a 1926 Bungalow. JMHO. Green OR Rust, sure. Autumnal colors are classic in a bungalow. Accent walls or color blocking maybe not so much.

Â The underside of the archways - wall color follows the flow of traffic from the main, formal entrance. For example: living room is red and dining room is green. Traffic flow dictates from the front door you enter the living room first and you go thru that archway into the dining room. The underside of that archway should be the same color as the living room, red.

That goes for all thresholds. Lots of times there are color rules can be broken. The color follows the flow of traffic rule is one of those that's best followed and not tinkered with.
