I use my iPhone, in my pocket. The timer beeps, or plays a tune, and vibrates until it's shut off.

How about your cell phone or one of the pendant timers you wear around your neck?

It might be better to have the timer on you than to rely on one loud enough to hear several rooms away.

I use an old cell phone as an alarm clock. Put it in my t-shirt pocket set for an obnoxious alarm tone and vibrate and it wakes me up. Could be used for a kitchen timer. And the snooze is handy too if you know you have the time to spare, otherwise, set it earlier in case you're in the middle of something and can't get away right away.

Definitely use one you carry with you. Just have to find one that's loud enough for your needs.

There's a lot of people that can't hear certain tones well. I also use the computer a lot. Have several great little timer programs and you can choose the .wav file (just be sure it's not muted or volume low) and it also gives a popup alert. Maybe something like that would be handy at least occasionally.

Maybe one of these? There is one (traffic light timer) that beeps loudly until shut off, and also has flashing lights to catch your attention.

Oly,thanks for the link. There are a couple timers that look interesting. I might just purchase a few to see which one works best. I feel stupid not remembering the SoundBytes site. That's where I purchased my Sonic "Boom" alarm clock several years ago. Regular alarm clocks don't faze me at all. I sleep right through them even if they're positioned just a few inches away from my pillow. But the Sonic works great! It's super loud and also has a vibrating attachment to put under my pillow. Between the loud noise and the shaking pillow, I wake up when needed.

Ann, thanks so much for the suggestion. I went to the site and read about this timer. It really does sound perfect for me. But the site didn't have much information about ordering. A quick Google search led to several restaurant supply sites plus the ability to order from Amazon. So I'm going to order it tomorrow. Between a couple I saw at SoundBytes and this one, I should be set.

It seems like such a inconsequential thing to fuss about, but being able to hear a timer means a lot to me.

I had a wonderful timer...it had a clip on the back and I could attach it to my shirt.....and it rang until I shut it off. Alas though it wore out!.
Since then I have gone through 3 or 4 others....one that was very good, Peppi gave me.....and my son who has "rock band ears"...played in a rock band as a kid and wouldn't pay attention to me about using ear plugs... anyhow he "stole" my timer because he said it was the only timer he could hear.
I need one that clips to my shirt ...or hangs around my neck.
I remember walking over to a neighbor's who was in his yard....and he saying "Linda, I don't know what you are timing but you only have 2 minutes left!"
I need that polder one....and I need to get rid of the 3 in the drawer that you have to punch 45 times to set for 45 minutes!!

a great timer. It has a plastic membraine so gunk
doesn't get into the keys. And the volume is adjustable,
and can be heard all over the house when turned on high.
It's around $20, but it looks like it will last forevah.
(and it takes regular AAA batteries). I love mine.

Thank you all for your many suggestions. I looked at all the sites you suggested and picked out about 3-4 timers that I'd like to try. Luckily, I found all those timers on Amazon, so I can place one single order. Having more than one timer may seem like overkill, but I honestly think I'll use them all in different circumstances. This has been a very frustrating problem for me. So, thanks again!

I don't know if this can do you any good:

A wireless battery operated door bell/intercom - you have one station turned on and put it in front of an appliance that you have set the timer. You carry the other receiving station with you. Wherever you are, even outside of your house, you will be able to hear your appliance's timer alarm going off.

A micro walkie talkie - to do the same thing.

Like Lee and others, I carry mine in my pocket if I will not be staying in the kitchen. If you do not happen to be wearing pockets, then you can put on an apron that has pockets and carry it in that.

I have one that allows me to have three separate timing settings going at once, which I love, but I have not been able to find it in stores recently. I think I might want to get one to wear around my neck as well.

The Cooper FT24 Timer has a volume control. If I'm not in the kitchen I have the volume turned up so I can hear it loud and clear anywhere in the house.

In the summer, when windows are open, I can hear it even when I am outside.

Ann, I think the Cooper will be fine for in-the-house use. And I think Grainlady's Polder around-the-neck timer will work for when I'm outside. I often individually water plants and sometimes totally forget that I turned the hose on. We're on a multi-acre property, so I'm often too far away from the house itself to hear anything inside.

Unfortunately, I honestly cannot hear most timers if they are hidden away in a pocket. But I think with an assortment of loud timers, I should be able to function better than I am now. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I think carrying the timer would be a great idea - One day I was making hard boiled eggs (pretty easy) but thought I would take the garbage out while I waited for them to start boiling. While outside I pulled a few weeds then remembered my neighbour was away and needed the lawn mowed (it was deep) about an hour later I came home..............oops!! burnt eggs on the stove Thank God the house was still standing and not on fire it took days to get the smell out of the house.

I so understand the need for a good timer. Thanks for the post and the ideas.

I'm waiting for delivery of the Cooper, thanks to AnnT's suggestion . I also tend to walk away momentarily and forget what I was waiting for.
