Green tomatoes won't give up their skins!

I have an island covered and deep in green tomatoes. I had plans to turn some into pie fillings, for which Annie has told me I don't need to peel them. But I want to make salsa out of some, and also freeze some. The NCHFP tells me to peel them to freeze them, as does the salsa recipe. I'm doing my usual dunk in boiling, then ice water...have also cut X's on the bottoms to encourage the process...But I tried the process twice, and also keeping them in the boiling water much longer and they won't let loose. If I try with more force, the tomato comes apart instead of the skin coming off. Should I just give up and leave them on?
